I have a 95 Dak X-Cab. I lowered the back using 2" blocks. i want to lower the front about an 1". I am considering having a local custom shop cut the springs. is this a good idea. what other alternatives are there?

Cutting the factory springs may give you the end result that you want...but by far isn't the correct way to do it. Cutting the springs will change the weight rating, rebound, and handling characteristics...look at the "lowered trucks" that bounce all over the road...cut springs. (Another stupid trick was to heat them up and lower them...unfortunately, that creates stress fracturs in the springs if not cooled down properly.)
A set of custom, lowering springs will retain (or enhance) the handling and spring rate for the truck.
Check with Hotchkis to see if they have something available for you.

Dan, Bernd is right. DO NOT cut or heat springs! You will regret it. Trust me. Just spend a few dollars and get a bell tech or ground force drop kit. The only thing I have to sweat is tire clearance on knarly dips. Other than that, the ride and handling is virtually the same as stock. As my momma always told me "you get what you pay for". Good luck and enjoy the thumbs up you'll get. Just my $.02 worth.

Can i use coil springs from a 4-cylinder dakota on my truck to lower it? i have seen in Sport Truck where a guy used the 4-cylinder springs on a v8 and it dropped it 1 1/4". since i only have the V6 i think it would lower it 1/2" to 1".

You can...but again, the spring rate for the 4-cyl is different than for the V8. It'll make for a "springy" ride.
