I have a 99 3.9 dakota.......its had a long list of problems and its latest hobby is stalling.....Since the day i got it (bought it new), whenever i put it in park, the engine would always race up to around 1000 rpm's for a second (right after i put it in park), then drop down to 500 and sometimes even a little less. It would buck and stumble for a second and then recover its self and level off at its normal idle speed. At night, the engine slows down enough for a second that the headlights get real dim. People that ride in the truck often think the truck has stalled since it drops down so low for a second(gets real quiet). Of course, the dealer tells me its normal and that all dakotas do that...So i said whatever, noting that it will probably start to actually stall as it gets more miles on it. Well, now its begining to stall on occaision and its very infuriating beacause its still a fairly new truck. It just seems like the computer can't keep up with changes in engine load and idle speed. By the way, it seemed to get a little worse a few months ago when i had the "flash" done to my truck to fix the PING. Anyone have any thoughts????(Bernd??) And don't tell me its normal cause it most definatly is not....

Don't feel so bad your not the only one. I have a 2000 4.7 v8 5spd and once in a while it stalls. Its done it since I got it. Started doing it about a month after I drove it off the lot. Its been to the dealer but they didn't tell me its normal. They talked to dodge and they said they know about it that they are working on a fix. So I would say talk to another dealer yours maybe giving you a load of S...

Hehehe...It's Normal. ;) (Just kidding)
No...it's not normal and it sounds like a bad IAC Solenoid (from the factory). That's the big black "thingy" in the back of the throttle body that controls the idle (controlled vacuum leak).
Be persistent with the dealer and try to get it fixed. If they say it's normal...get it down in writing on a work order. That way...if it causes any problems in the future...you have documentation that the problem existed and they didn't do anything about it.

They replaced the IAC valve about a year ago and it didn't make a difference.....

I'd be persistent with the dealer then. It's still under your warranty right?

Tim as Bernd said ,try the dealer again (I would tell them it is a SAFTEY FACTOR(witch it is) that you almost got hit by a Truck when it stalled with a baby in your Truck. If that don't work call CHRYSLER at 1-888-4-A-DODGE
