Ok, it has become apparent to me that there is an external power amplifier for the sound system, seprate from the head unit. I'm trying to install a new cd player and i think i need to bypass this power amp. Does anybody know where it is located?

I have a 98 with the stock infinity speakers. The aplifier is actually in the speakers. I installed a Kenwood CD player and had problems with that at first. Don't let the salesman or installers tell you that you must replace the speakers 'cause that's what they told me. I went ahead and installed it anyways and no sound would was produced from the CD player. I forgot exactly what wires I had crossed, but this was caused because when I inserted a CD, it was looking for a power antennae. It works just fine, although the stock speakers really aren't capable of handling the power of the kenwood.

I completly took out my OEM amp it is located on the passenger side. Take off the ride side panel next to your door, its just below and to the right of your glove box near the floor board. It should be there its a slim black amp. You will have to find out which speaker wires got to which speakers, its not labled. I went to a stereo shop and they told me that the speakers had a built in amp also, not the case. It is a small booster amp that run all your speakers. Just remove the 4 screws and it comes out.

I have a '97 SLT Club Cab and I replaced all of the factory speakers and head unit. I didn't find any amp in the kick panels, under the dash, of under the seats. The amp is not on the speakers though.
I have heard that it's under the dash but I don't know where it is...haven't had any problems with the new system though.
It's probably in the head unit (I had the "Premium Sound" - AM/FM/CD unit).
