When you install a new JET chip, it plugs into the original computer. The purpose is to re-tune your Dakota for more horsepower. I installed a new JET chip because I also have headers, a free flowing exhaust, a 180-degree thermostat, an aftermarket ignition.

If I were to rely on the original computer tuning, I wouldnt be getting much horsepower from those modifications. So I installed a JET chip into the computer, and it accomodates these modifications and reprograms the original computer, otherwise known as "tuning".

If you install a JET chip, nothing is lost. If someone were to do a diagnostic check on your engine, their equipment is meant for stock tuning. So that is why you would need to take out your JET chip for that day and let them do their diagnostics. When they are done, you could install it again.

A JET chip just reprograms (tunes) the computer to tune it for more horsepower. You can easily get the original tuning back just by unplugging the JET chip.

Hey Ryan, Thanks. I misunderstood,I thought you were doing something as well as adding the chip.

Minor correction:

The JET (or any chip) does not "reprogram" or "tune" the factory computer. They don't have that capability.

What they do is alter the signals, from the various sensors, to the PCM...therefore changing the performance characteristics of the computer and engine.

The reason for the 180 T'Stat with the Stage-II "chips" is that they all change the timing to a more agressive curve which increases the chances of "pinging" with the factory 195 T'Stat. Running a colder T'Stat helps to resolve this...running one grade higher on fuel also is better with the "Performance Chips".

How do they do it?

Example: Changing the IAT and Coolant Temp signals to the computer (IAT = Intake Air Temp). The colder the reading, the more fuel and timing (advanced)...the warmer the reading, the less fuel and timing (retarded).

Hay Bernd if I change the t-stat and add a MOPAR EMC to my 2000 4.7L... would my trans ever shift into OD.My truck will not shift to OD tell it is up to heat (190?)or what ever t-stat the egine has.

Didn't you post something about that on a different thread? Something about the trans/OD turning on at a certain temp? I'm sure that Mopar would have taken that into consideration though.

Best recommendation: If the manufacturer calls for it on their aftermarket parts...then do it.

On the current 3.9/5.2/5.9L engines (and many who have swotched to the 180 on the 4.7L)...there doesn't seem to be a problem though. I can't imagine the transmission not shifting into OD before the engine is warmed up since the transmission will heat up quicker anyway. (Friction is a wonderful thing.)

Bernd I did post that on a different thread. It is very cold here and even if I worm my Truck up for 15 min.it will not shift to OD tell the t-stat is all the way open, when the gauge reads all the way up to heat.I can here it shift with the louder R/T exhaust. As I have said before...my manual said, thats the way it is. PS-I am wasting a lot of gas before it shifts to OD in the colder weather.

That sucks. Two guys that I know use the 180 T'Stat in their 4.7's and haven't had that problem...or at lest haven't said anything about it.

Hmmmmm.....

Bernd- before I changed the exhaust...I could not here it shift in OD.That is way... I now know that it takes so long to shift in OD, because of the noise of the exhaust.I also watch the tack and listen to the pipe.

Just out of curiosity...you mentioned that it's pretty cold where you're at. Have you put a "Radiator Blanket" infront of the grill to see if that helps warm up the engine in the cold...and keep it warm.

I had to do that a few times on my truck (two winters ago) when I was up in the mountains skiing. (10 degrees overnight and 25 during the day...never really "warmed up" until I put the blanket on the grill.)

No to your question on the blanket.I think I will have to warm it up longer.
