I had installed a set of Nerf Bars for my wife when she was 6-months pregnant (over a year ago) because she was having problems getting in and out of the truck. They weren't the most expensive ones but functional for offroading...Genuine Steel - Black Finish - $120. They lower the entry level about 3" with a non-slip (flat) step built into the tube. Besides the added side protection against trees and rocks, they also look very good on Dakota trucks.
My truck is a '97 Dakota (2WD)...but it's been lifted 3" on suspension and 2" on body + 32" tires putting it almost 2" higher than a stock 4x4.
