I know it will be VERY loud with the cutout after the cat (it will be dumped right behind the cab) but how much louder or different will it sound if I cut the tailpipe off right after the muffler compared to having the stock tailpipe?
I have the flowmaster 50 Series SUV.

it will probably sound a little deeper and u will have more vibration in the cab. i had my exhaust cut off after the stock muffler before i got my flowmaster and it sounded really good just to quiet.

i was looking at my pathetic Y pipe and i'm real tempted to get some long tube headers and ditch the Y pipe. what do you guys think?

Since you have a 2wd, I recommend with the Mopar/PPH/Doug Thorley long tube headers.

I'll leave my tailpipe on for now, because I think it's your muffler itself that makes it sound so good and not the fact that there's no pipe after it.
Right now I have a 50 series SUV with a chrome tip on the stock pipe. I plan on welding in the cutout right between the cat and the muffler. It's easy to access and should sound good.

Well remember I swapped my first flowmaster 40 delta flow in keeping my STOCK pipe all the way. It made an amazing difference.

If you just want a better sound try that BEFORE removing the tail pipe. You may just liek it.

Toolfan. Go for the long tubes 100%!!!
If I could get some for my truck I would!

good point.
I'll go for the cutout righe after the cat, before the muffler. That should give me the LOUDness I want! I'll leave the tailpipe on because it does look nice with the slash-cut tip on there. (turtle wax chrome polish makes it look brand new)

Tell me more about the Turtle Wax Chrome Polish.
My tips are very dull these days. Even after I wash the truck.

I found it at Advance Auto Parts, and it works very well. It's called Turtle Wax Chrome Polish and rust remover. It a thick liquid that you apply to the chrome after you wash and wipe all the dirt/sand/etc. off the tips. Then you take a cloth (I use cheesecloth and/or paper towels) and just keep wiping and polishing it until the polish starts to disappear. It only takes a minute or less to do and it's worked well with my cheap 3A $7 chrome (not stainless)tip from Advance. It is starting to get some pitting, but none that's visible, just if you run your finger over the tip. It also works extremely well on my ball mount. I put it on the same day as the chrome tip, and if I let it go a month w/o using the polish, it is covered in pitting that makes it look dull brown. I use maybe a tsp. of the polish and wipe it with a paper towel for a minute and it looks better than new! The best chrome polish I've ever used.
About the exhaust, I had my mom today drive the truck around a parking lot (first time she's driven a truck since my parents had a '80 Bronco w/ a 302 v8) While she got to drive the Dak I just sood by while I listened to the 50 series SUV flowmaster. That was the first time I've listened to the truck driving from the outside. I've only previously heard what it sounds like inside. It makes it sound like I have a much bigger engine than the 318! Very deep rumble like you'd hear a big block mopar have. Cutout coming soon since I just figured out how to fit it between the cat and muffler.

What the polish looks like:
http://www.guitar.co.jp/image/item/accessary/turtle-chrome-polish-big.jpg
can be found at Wal-mart also.
It's cheap and it works VERY well.

Summit changed their cutouts; now they only have uncoated steel instead painted ones, but they include clamps now. Jegs stll have painted ones. I'll get the summit one when I get a Safari Bar and maybe a G-tech also.

Oh, I forgot to say that I had planned on getting some hi-temp paint from Wal-mart or Advance and put a few good coats on the cutout before welding it in to prevent rust.

good luck with that cutout. that would be awesome if you got the cutout to switch from corked to uncorked with a flip of a switch.

and the turtle polish is great stuff. did my whole truck once and it looked great afterwords.

I was looking at the electric cutouts but I'll hold off on them until after I have the cutout on there for a little bit. I have a lot of other things I want do do before the electric cutout. I want to get a Hughes modified TB, G-tech, Westin Safari bar, skid plates, and over the summer after I get some more money a Hypertech PPIII.

Thanks for the chrome polish tip.

I may buy some AND some polish for the truck paint job as well. Never been done and really needing it!

As far as cut out/dumps go. I actually think a stock engine sounds BETTER through a performance muffler (like a flowmaster) than it does through a short straight pipe. They just sound lazy and wimpy. Loud yes. But not a good sound like open collector radical V8's at a race track. BIG diff in sound there.

You COULD open your exhaust after the cat and run it once.

Then you will know what I am talking about.

Another polish that works really well (especially in dusty conditions) is a car wax by Dupont that has Teflon in it. I don't remember the specific name of it, but it is at Walmart. Gives your paint a glassy marble look and is surprisingly easy to keep clean. Doesn't do too bad a job on chrome either.

(Err.. sorry for the topic hi-jack!)

I changed my mind. I'll save the money I planned on spending on a G-Tech and put it toward a Hypertech PPIII. Hopefully I'll be ordering the cutout and Safari bar from summit by next week. I'll definately post the results of the cutout after it's welded in. It might be a while like a couple weeks but it's definately coming!

No I haven't waxed it yet.

It NEEDS it too.

So does our Grand Caravan.

The Dakota because of the Arizona Pinstriping it got going offroad.

The Caravan because of everybody rubbing against it as they walk by it in the garage :(

Thanks toolfan! I used armorall on the valve covers and hoses and anything that looked dull. It kept the clean look for over a month.
Signing up for CarDomain is free. I just found that out today so I made one real quick and will add more after I get my parts from Summit.
