Has anyone took the heads of a 318? Was there alot of carbon buildup on the piston or head? I know that it contributes to pinging.

the old ones in the intake... other than that no
1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

My '99 5.2 started pinging at 60K miles even w/ 93 octane. At 100k, the pinging and mysterious oil consumption (1 qt/500 mi) got out of control, so I took it to the dealer. They said there was a service notice to those who complained before 80K. The problem is the intake manifold. It leaks, causing a lean engine and oil consumption.
Dodge wanted $550 plus parts. I did it myself and it's been great. I still use 89 oct, and 1 qt/1200k, but its OK. Combined mileage is 15.3, w/ 4wd,5sp, extra cab, w/ towing pkg. Not too bad.

I guess I've been desensatized by the 1 qt/500 mile thing, so 1200 miles is a drastic improvement. For a while, I thought I was going to do a total rebuild. I had a '88 Dak.,3.9, 4wd, w/168k miles that never burned a drop between changes. I miss that old truck.

Replace your PCV valve Bet the rest of your oil use will end. If not, still a good idea at your milage.

yes,carbon will glow[stay hot]on the piston or head causing the air/fuel mixture to ignite prematurly
slow and city driving causes this more
take it to the track or find a a good desserted road and thump on it a bit,misting or dumping a very little water down the throttle body after the engine is good and hot will help break the carbon up,if you do this at night sometimes you,ll see sparks come out the exhurst pipe from the carbon breaking up

Sea Foam is an engine cleaner available at NAPA auto parts stores.
It is really good for cleaning carbon deposits and things like this out of the engine.
If you use Sea Foam or pour anything at all down into your throttle body; do it very very slowly. Follow the directions of whatever you use!!!
Liquids building up in the cylinders in high levels can hydrolock the engine and severely break things. lol
