I'm talking about a stock trans. The 727 will bolt right up, the 91 Dakota still did not have a computer controlled tranny so there will be no problems there. The only thing I can think of is a 727 tranny will require a different driveshaft. The A518 would use the stock one. I understand about building on a budget. I just got mine finished (well they're never finished) last summer, after 3 years of working on it. Of course my truck has a fuel cell, 10 point cage, a stroker 318 , race built tranny, custom Denny's driveshaft and the list goes on. It's pretty much done now, my 16 month old son comes first. Oh your other question, if you go carbed there will be no computer control of engine rpm or top speed. I would high recommend a ignition system with a rev limiter. I use Jacobs pro-street with the nitrous mastermind too control the 125 shot.

I think at some point I mentioned the cam/timing cover issue to Zac, maybe not this post. Anyway, there's some conjecture over that as well. While the LA cams are 3/10" longer, it's really best to actually test fit to see. I've done this, and there was plenty of room. I'm using the LA setup, but was curious just the same.
The stock OD unit can handle 400 ft/lb torque (note I'm referencing the OD unit and not the 3-speed part of the tranny), so if you plan on more than that, the OD unit must be beefed with better parts to handle it.

how much torque do you think that engine combo will make? Also what years of A518's would i be looking for, and how do I identify them? If I were to use a 727 would all the mounts work? I was reading on other posts about the 8 3/4 swap and there is a lot of conflicting reports. some say A body, some B body and then some are also saying E body rears are the right size. Can either of you guys clarify this for me?

Hmmm, haven't seen any hard numbers on the rears. I'll dig around and see what I can turn up unless someone else has these numbers handy. So much has been addressed, I'm not sure what engine you are aiming for at this point. Still supercharged 318 or a more budget-oriented normally-aspirated engine?
You have some room on the torque issue, because, unless you're planning on being at near full throttle in overdrive, from a very low speed (which would be hard to do) you're not likely to hit 400 lbs, unless you have a really gutsy engine that can make that sort of power at 1/2-2/3 throttle. My point in the previous post is that the OD is the weaker link of the two sections.

Sorry for the confusion. I am aiming for a budget N/A 318 w/360 heads. The 25 psi 318 is just a dream.

The 518 would be 1990-1995. The 1990 and 1991 models are non-lockup units which allow the use of any 727 non-lockup converter. From 1992-95 they are lockups. There are lots more lock-up converter options available now than in the past, and they hold up much better than earlier models. I measured my 8 1/4 and an 8 3/4, and, while not scientific, they both measured right about 27" center to side. My 8 3/4 is from a "B" body. The tranny mount point on a 727 is 2 inches shorter than on the OD trannys. Mopar used a different tranny mount plate on the 3 speed Dakotas that extended forward from the frame mount. You may be able to mod your current tranny mount, or use one from an older model.
On your current engine goal, a stock 518 will do the job, just get the TransGo kit and have a good aux. cooler.

Oh, the 518 was redesignated as 46RH in the early 90's. They are the same thing. DO NOT USE THE 46RE. This is an electronically controlled unit from 1996 and up. It requires the OBDII computer, and you don't have that.

thank you for that info. What would be the benefit of using a lockup style tranny? And what cars are classified as a B-Body.

Most notable are the B-bodies known as the Charger (General Lee)/Road Runners of the late 60's. I think they started mid-60's. Not sure beyond that.
The lockup converter provides a direct mechanical linkage between the engine and tranny. RPM's drop another 400-or-so rpm when it locks up. This gives a nudge to mileage, and the tranny fluid runs cooler. Nowadays they're making hi-stall units with seriously stout guts, so reliability isn't a worry like it was early on.

Okay, B-bodies ran from 1962-1979. Early Darts (bigger than later A-body Darts), the Polara, Coronet, Savoy (can we say Max Wedge cars? WooHoo!!!), Belvedere, Fury, and Sport Fury. Moving on to Coronet/Satelite/Charger/Road Runner, on to 71-74 Charger. Finally, the -75-79 late stuff, being the Satelite and Cordoba, Fury, Charger SE, and Magnum. However, since the 8 3/4 was out of production by 1974, that should further limit your search.

Okay thanks for the clarification. I was thinking about a 2400 stall speed. Does that sound about right?

I talked to the muffler shop in town and he said he could only do 2" true duals because anything bigger would hit the axle . Will that be too small and restrict the exhaust. I am going to get the super comp full length headers too.

Not bad, but not optimal either. You could always have side exhaust just in front of the rear wheels.

I have the Hooker Super Comps, with true 2 1/2 duals, a H-Pipe with Flowmaster Delta Flows and turndowns infront of the axle. I'd go with 2 1/2.

ya thats what i was thinking. I dont really want to exit in front of the rear wheels b/c to go below the frame the exhaust would hang down too low and the frame is too far away from the body and I dont think it would look right. Also what muffler would give my truck a deep performance rumble? I dont want muffler that will snap really harshly.

Agreed on the dual 2.5", but I'd try to get an X-pipe in there. I'm kinda leanin' towards the Hooker Aero Chamber for my next muffler. Gonna listen to the sound byte and see how it sounds.

On my dak, when i start it up it puffs a cloud a blue smoke then seems to go away. there is minimal smoke while I am driving. do you think that it is valve seals or rings? or both? the engine has 206 000 km on it.
