 Subject: 01 4.7 stalling and rpm drops

I have a 01 4.7 4x4 quadcab. For the last two weeks, when I go to slow down or brake, I can watch my headlights dim and my rpms drop to about 250 then instantly raise back to 750. Once in a while the truck will completely die. This happens as soon as I let off the gas pedal. If I'm just letting off the gas and rolling, (not stopping) the rpms will go to 450-500 and then come up to the idle 750. Anyone have any ideas on what this can be? I have cleaned the throttle body,IAC sensor and motor. Looking for any ideas. Thanks.

Did anything happen to your truck just prior to these symptoms starting? Any problems with your battery, the truck running weird, etc.? Do you have access to a hand held multimeter or voltmeter?

Try some STP injector cleaner (black bottle) in the fuel tank. A few gallons of 93 octane may help. How old are the spark plugs and the PCV valve? Bosch Platinum +4's helped give my '01 4.7 a smoother idle.

Nothing happened to the truck prior to these symptoms. Just seemed to start. The easiest way to explain the symptoms would be comparing it to the torque converter not unlocking. It would be just like braking in gear with a stick and almost killing the truck. I Cleaned the injectors with the 3m Injector cleaner kit that attaches directly to the schrader valve about 6 months ago. Seemed to help the idle. Now that I think of it, I have had this problem 2 times before in the cold and once in warm weather. I just cleaned the throttle body,TPS, and the Idle control motor and it seemed to solve the problem. Not this time. ANy more info would help. Thanks.

I have the same thing going on in a 00 Durango with a 4.7 , I wish I could figure it out . Gonna change the plugs tomorrow hope that helps.

In my commute I have some hills that I conserve fuel on my coasting in neutral (have 45RFE auto)...
From time to time (only when engin is warm) when I let off the throttle and drop into neutral, it drops off fast, pauses around 400 then stalls. I always drops down low when I do this, but has oinly stalled on me 3 times in 6mo's ownership of this truck.

my 2001 4.7 does the same thing with the low idle, but it hasen't stalled out yet. but it has a stick shift. so it can't be the torque converter. any other ideas?

got a 00' 4.7 doing same thing. Changed IAC and did inducton service. Got 75000 miles. Gonna hook up to a scanner monday to check everything cause like evryone else, I cant figure it out. Mine has stalled three or four times in a year and a half. Only at first start though. Have had this problem maybe 4 to 6 months now. Let you know what the results of scan are.

My 2000 Dak 4.7 w/60K miles does the same thing. It stalled on me while on a date the other night. How embarrasing to stall an automatic. It has does this 4 times now. Tried new plugs, clean filter, injector cleaner, with no effect.

Ive noticed the same problem on my 01 QC Dakota with the 4.7. This may seem weird, but it does not do this when the ac is on, or the heater is on half def, half foot vents thing. I thought it was weird after all the things i tried that that seems to have worked....hmm

you have the ac or defrosters on the motor kicks up to 750 rpm negating the stalling. the 4.7 seems to have a problem with regulating it`s idling parameters when the ac or defrosters are off.

I thought about the torque converter being low and not unlocking also. Had a complete system flush the other day. Did nothing for this problem. Is there a torque converter lockup sensor? Tried changing plugs last year when it happened and nothing changed. Seems as if it is only a winter problem and when the truck is cold. I would like to know if maybe there is a way that condensation is forming on the circuit board in the computer case and causing a short of some sort until it evaporates. Otherwise I have no clue right now.

01quadcab4x4, I didn't see any comment about your PCV valve; new? old? The old valve can affect idle quality. You may have some lingering water in fuel from condensation or bad gasoline. Condensation is more likely to occur in a fuel tank in the winter, all the more reason not the let the vehicle be parked overnight with less than 1/2 tank capacity. More fuel=less condensation. Try 4-5 gallons of a good premium 93 octane on top of the 87 octane.

I have the same problem, but have done plugs,fuel treatment etc, etc. Have not replaced the pcv. Where is this valve and how do I replace it?
Also heard to try a new map sensor, has anyone tried replacing the map sensor?

PCV valve is fairly new. Picking up a IAC tonight. Hopefully this solves the problem. Dodge told me you can clean them 25% of the time, the rest they have to be replaced. I'll update once I find out if this is the problem.

Changed the IAC last night and it seemed to help with my rpm's dropping and coming back up. Truck still seems to be running strange at idle. Sometimes at a light it idles smooth other times it will seem as if it's missing for a second then recovers. Completely stalled once today. Gonna try the pcv valve tommorow. Maybe even the tps.

hey i have a 5.2 and had that same problem, cleaned the throttle body and have not had a problem since then. if you notice a lot of carbon build up take it off and clean it, real easy to do. and here's how to do it:
Most people think that cleaning the throttle body requires a can of Carb/Throttle Body Cleaner and a quick "wash" of the bores. This may work, but only washes the dirt and cleaner down into your intake manifold where it can puddle up and break down the belly-pan gasket. Then, it also is pulled into the combustion chamber where is can foul up the spark plugs.
The proper way to clean your throttle body is to remove it from the engine (you'll need a small pan, some compressed air, and a new throttle body gasket for this procedure):
1. Remove your air hat from the throttle body
2. Disconnect the sensor connectors (TPS, MAP, and IAC)
3. Remove the four throttle body bolts
4. Lift the throttle body up and away from the intake manifold (place a rag over the manifold opening to prevent anything from falling inside)
5. Remove the three sensors (Do not drop them)
6. Remove the three screws for the throttle linkage (Not required...can be done with linkage attached)
7. Place the throttle body in a small pan and spray Carb/Throttle Body Cleaner in the bores, underside passages, and ports. Let soak for about a minute.
8. Clean the IAC Solenoid - Refer to "How to clean the IAC Solenoid"
9. Spray some more Carb/Throttle Body Cleaner in the bores and ports of the throttle body
10. Wipe clean with a lint free rag (baby diaper works well) and blow out all the ports with some compressed air (a small can from a electronics store works just fine).
11. Reinstall all sensors, then reinstall on your vehicle with a new Throttle Body gasket (don't forget to remove the rag)
Top
This is recommended at every Tune-Up to prevent excess carbon buildup on the IAC plunger. In some cases, you'll notice a slightly erratic idle quality. This is the first step in taking care of that problem. IAC = Intake Air Control (Solenoid).
• Remove the Air Hat from the Throttle Body
• Disconnect the sensor harness from the IAC Solenoid (Rear of Throttle Body)
• Remove the two Torx-25 Screws
• Remove the IAC Solenoid (Be careful not to lose the rubber O-Ring)
• Spray some Carb/TB Cleaner in the IAC port on the Throttle Body and let it sit
• Spray some Carb/TB Cleaner on the tip of the IAC Solenoid and wipe clean (Do NOT forcefully twist or push the plunger - You will damage the Solenoid. Wipe very gently.)
• Spray a little bit more Carb/TB Cleaner in the IAC port on the Throttle Body and wipe clean with a thin/lint-free rag
• Reinstall the IAC Solenoid (Make sure you don't lose the rubber gasket on the solenoid)
• Reinstall the sensor connector and airhat
• Start the engine and let idle for about 1 minute.
