Yeah, only one way to find out huh?

My dad used to have a '67 chevelle with a 327 when he was in high school and to this day swears it was the best engine ever produced. Every time I try and tell him something about my truck he says "well, with my 327 yadda yadda yadda." But then again, my dad still dresses like it's 1967 too.

I think he MAY be referring to the NEW 5.3 liter modular chevy engine which some of them Chebby guys like to throw the "327" word around.
makes you get confused.
however, look at all the new Dodge truck guys throwing around the "Hemi" name. So I guess it's all fair. We know which Hemi they are talking about.

Well I ran a modified one with Headers,Chip, underdrive poulleys, shift kit, CAI and he had 3.73s with 20 inch wheels and I got him out of the hole and into first gear but after that he pulled and I lost about 1 truck length by the time we hit 70 mph.

Stock for stock You should take him but dont think it will be easy they run like 15.6 in the quarter stock I believe.

If he has the 4x4 then you might beat him. The extra 100 lbs or even more or so for 4x4. Just make sure your tire spin is minimal. The other day me in my truck and my buddy in his HEMI were goofing around and found an old farm to market road and decided to race. Well I would of possible had him but when i slammed the gas he took off and I got stuck spinning almost to 3rd gear. So traction is everything.....dont lose it!!

My friend has a 2001 v8 sierra, i believe it has the same engine. He and I both have k&n intake, he has single exit flowmaster and i have dual magna flow exaust, We raced and I BARELY beat him, he started to catch up at around 65-70mph.

I think it could go either way depending on how your truck is running on that day.

Those Vortec engines come alive above 4k RPM's or so. No torque from the 4.8 that i drove for almost a year.
However, it having no ability to spin the tires could be an advantage at times.
i just wouldn't pick a 4.8 Vortec for towing anything.

the new gen small block 5.3 has no relationship to the old 327 other than its a pushrod motor made by chevy. actually the cubes of the 5.3 is 323. the old 327 engine is actually a 5.4 liter....

i think its so funny how these guys say...."yea i got the 327 in my silverado" ive even seen old men have decals put on thier truck saying "chevy 327".

ah well one day they will learn, if not..it will be funny for just that much longer lol

actually, i think its a 330. but even so like you said it has no relation to the 327. they do have way more horsies than the 318. 295hp out of the box to be exact. but then you have more truck so thats why you beat him. or he cant drive. or both.

I find it funny Graphite Dak would say a 4.8 has no torque while driving a 4.7 . I have owned both and put in equal wieght and equal geared vehicles the 4.8 is by far a more capable engine it has about the same peak torque as the 4.7 at 295 ft lbs, but the 4.8 has a torque curve as flat as a board 269 ft lbs at 1800 peak at 4000 295 ft lbs still making over 290 ft lbs at 5200 thats how the get 285 hp vs 235 hp from the 4.7. Not to bash the 4.7 I own one currently in a 04 QC dak 4x4 3.55 gear only because GM is run by a bunch of old granny bean counters that won't put a 4.8 in a Colardo an tried to cram a 5 cly donw this die hard Boetie nuts throat, so I jumped ship , but GM makes the better powertrains for the most part in my opinion. The 5.3 will suprise you being a larger version of the 4.8. By the way I had a 02 ext cab 4x4 3.73 geared 4.8 with an auto 4L60E and it would spank my Dak. I'll give it to Chrysler they care more about gearheads such as myself than GM dose, GM made a Chrysler man out of me

Well they are some quick trucks...I know the guy I talked to in his RC 5.3 Stepside said his truck weighs on title about 4400 lbs. So thats not that heavy but heavy enough to not get creamed by him either. The same guy two weeks ago just built up his new 6.0L out of an SS and he is running low 14s now....geez

Well. I WAS driving a 4.8 reg cab GMC 4.8 for almost a year.

It felt like I was driving a Honda V-tec.
I could hit the gas and it would not burn out or pull very hard until about 3500 RPM's!
Then it felt like a turbo was spooling up or something!

When I drove it up some mild mountains north of phoenix it didn't hold the hills grunting like my 4X4 QC Dakota does.

The GMC felt kind of cool with the almost "powerband" kind of feel it had as it reved up. But it did NOT have anywhere NEAR the flat and low end grunt my Dakota has.
And when I first got the Dakota, I STILL was driving the GMC on a daily basis (work truck) for a while. So I DO have gorunds to compare trucks :P

Graphite you where probaly driving a 3.08 geared GMC and was it a 99 because in 99 the 4.8 was 255HP in 00-04 they where 270HP in 05 they are 285HP. My 02 with 3.73 and 285/75/16 was quicker than my 04 dak with 3.55 and 245/70/16, witch the dak's final ratio is actualy lower than my old Chevys. I use to be a tech for a Dodge dealer in Nashville in 99 when the first of the 4.7 came in I performed a lot of PDI's on them, and it felt like the 00 and 01's I drove where a lot stronger than my 04. My 04 dosen't feel awsome and for the most part its stock I am about to put the HO cams in it and run true dual 2.5" exhaust with an X pipe I hope this helps a lot. As it sits now I am kind of disapointed with the performance of my truck. I also hate the way my trans shifts this thing is just about a slushamatic except for WOT and it's not very responseive to the needs of the engine. Oh well I still love my truck and I have never owned anything that I was totaly satisfied with.

I don't think it was 3.08's. I know what them are like. 60 in forst gear!!

But it WAS a few years old. A 2000 GMC I think.
All stock.

My auto tranny shifts awesome and I'm someone who knows how to mod the older tranny's (700R4's, 727's, etc to make them snap your neck). Have you done the TPS mod yet on your '04?

Sometimes I don't think all trucks come from the factory exactly the same. Some people complain about the tranny. Some people like it.
Who knows. But I can just let mine shift by itself and give half throttle and it will almost wind out the gears and shift pretty firm. WOT it shifts pretty damn hard. If I had a RC 2WD I could probably almost bark them tires.
Mine has NO slow sounding shifts. Only that breif Torque management with the timing retard but it still slams pretty good from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, etc.
