 Subject: erratic idle after battery disconnect

My son purchased a 1999 Dodge Dakota with the 5.2L, manual tranny about a month ago. It has ran great since he bought it. My wife always thought it idled "too" fast when we came to a stop sign, paused, etc,,but I told her it was due to the manual transmission. If you tapped on the gas pedal it would idle down quickly. Last week the truck wouldnt start, and I figured it was the battery cable or connection, sure enough it was corroded. So I took the Positive cable off the battery, cleaned the post, cleaned the cable end, and re-installed. The truck started right up, and ran fine going down the road,,,only problem, is now, when we come to a stop or pause at an intersection, the dang thing dies! Otherwise it runs fine down the open road. I imagine disconnecting the battery, reset the computer or something, but I sure hate to take it to the local repair shop for a minimum $50 service check. Is this common if you unhook the batteries on these trucks?

I too have the 318 with the manual. In the past when my truck would idle fast there was one easy fix - clean the intake butterfly with some carb/choke cleaner and most importantly disassemble the idle control selenoid (just to the rear of the intake butterfly) and clean out the port and the selenoid tip. Crud can build up here and interferes with the idle control. See if that does't fix your problem. Good Luck

coadman...that problem has happened to my 2000 5.9...no need to worry..the computer "forgot" it's idle...just drive it for a while "keep it running" 30 min or so, and it will be fine

I drove it about 40 miles today, but not all at once,,had to make a few stops,,,but after that long of period, it still will just "die" when I stop at stop signs or just slow down to turn the corner.

Take off the idle air motor, located on the back of the throttle body, and clean the pintil (tip) of the motor. If its all carboned up more than likely thats your problem. THose idle air motors are stepper motors, which means that they have many differnt positions they can operate in, what happens is carbon will cause these to stick, causing erratic idle, or dieing. If cleaning doesnt fix your prob. a new idle air will most likely be needed. You might also have a vacuum leak around the intake, or trottle body. Take some carb cleaner and spray at the base of the throttle body and where the intake meets the heads, if idle chages while vhechile is running then you know if you have a vacuum leak, but it sounds like your idle air is just real dirty or needs replacement. Also when you reconnect the battery the idle will jump around for a bit, this is called its idle learn period, like the previous post said give it a few miles and it will readjust.

Ok, If I can figure out what the "idle air motor" is, I may try and take it off sometime tomorrow. But,,,,is it just coincidental that it started having problems as soon as I removed the battery cable?

I forgot to mention that this does have a "Helix" power tower on it, if that tells you anything more.

Something you had said got me to thinking, when you mentioned "Also when you reconnect the battery the idle will jump around for a bit, this is called its idle learn period". When we reconnected the battery the inital time, I remember the pedal fluctuating up and down, so I had my son push it to the floor and release it(could possibly have messed something up by doing that)..Anyway I asked the local Dodge dealer mechanic,,he said to remove positve cable for 5 min,,,,re-install positive cable,,make sure everything is off, AC, lights, radio, etc,,then start motor and let it run for at least 5 min. ,,,I did all that, but let it run for about `15 min, and went in the house. When I came back out, I took it for a test drive, and to my surprise, it doesnt die when I stop or pause. It doesnt seem like it idles, near as fast as it used to,,but it is still idleing fast enough that it hasnt died within 2 days of driving it. So,,,with all that in mind,,guess my problem is solved?

You should be all set - they just need a few minutes of throttle to relearn idle after losing power.
