Subject: 4.7L throttle position sensor

I have 2000 QC 4.7L Sport 2WD, 81,000 miles. I had posted several months back about RPMs fluctuating about 200 rpm then back down when running steady speed. The reply was the TPS (throttle position sensor) needed to be replaced.

The problem seemed to go away, now Sat. on a 400 mile round trip, it was doing it again.

Autozone has the TPS for around $25, and I read it was a 10 minute job.

There seems to be several sensors on the throttle body, does anybody have a picture of this specific sensor? Is there any risk of internal parts falling into the throttle body when removing the sensor and putting in the new one?

Also I found a procedure on the internet for removing and cleaning the throttle body. What is the reason for doing this? I haven't removed and cleaned mine to this point.

First clean the TB it might solve the problem.

Its the top sensor, two allen screws. Nothing can fall in by just taking off this one.

You don't have to replace the TPS or spend a lot of miney if you get this code. I just had it on my 2000 4.7 dak, and someone suggested I run a tank of premium with STP black fuel injector cleaner through it. ALSO, get a can of throttle body cleaner, and follow the directions. This will usually include taking the plenum off, and idling the engine while you intermittently spray the solvent into the throttle body. You might see that there is buildup, or a little discolouration around the sides of the Throttle body. Use an old toothbrush as you spray, but follow the can's directions. It worked wonders for me, and I haven't seen that code pop up yet. A lot cheaper than a new sensor. Good luck.

Actually, I haven't got a code or check engine light. It could probably use a cleaning. Our gas has the 10% ethenol and I've been told that should keep things clean, but a bottle of STP is probably good every once in a while.

I have a 99' 5.2 with the same problen. It was still under warn. It would fluctuate when driving and at idle some times. They replaced my intake gasket.They said it was a vacuum leak.

Running a bottle of STP black fuel injector cleaner is a good idea at least once every oil change. I like to mix in a little Marvel Mystery oil too. I've got a sticky check valve for my fuel pump and the MMO seems to help it. However, running the STP through doesn't do anything for the throttle body because no fuel ever passes through the throttle body. The 4.7L as well as any port fuel injected engine, injects the fuel right into the intake port. The throttle body builds up a lot of deposits that can cause poor idling problems and surging. The deposits are mostly due to the PCV system where crankcase gases are sucked into the intake system and past the throttle body into the intake manifold. This clogs up the idle air control oriface and puts nasty deposits on the throttle plate and throttle bore. If you think your TPS is flaky, you should use a digital voltmeter and measure the voltage from the middle pin on the TPS to ground. The voltage will typically read between .3v -.7v at idle. It should remain steady even if you tap on the TPS housing. This reading can be taken with the engine running.

Hey jpconard,
I have a 2000 Quad Cab 4.7 Auto. I had the same problem and replaced the TPS. Definite fix for me. It took about 40 seconds. All you have to do is buy the part (mine was a wells part no: tps333 at autozone.) Once you see the part in your hand, it will be obvious which one to replace. It is VERY easy. I tried all kinds of fuel supplements, and they did nothing!

did you reset the pcm? my 3.9 did the same thing after my tb swap (throttle was slightly wedged open on inital startup thus throwing off the inital tps setting) reset your pcm it should go away.....

Is this info regarding the TPS valid for an '02 4.7L also? I have surging/bucking problems at speeds between 35 - 55 mph. The dealer does not seem to want to diagnose since check engine light does not come on. They want to do a tune-up (plugs and PCV) for $275 instead.

I think you guys are all wrong... jpconrad, if the
tranny is one of those five speed auto's, you're
gonna see one to two hundred RPM's up and down
while driving down the highway. In fact, I bet
you're sick of it (if yours is the five speed)
going in and out of overdrive at just about
any incline to comes to. I know I am with mine and
it will be the last five speed I'll ever buy if
I ever buy one with a auto at all.

I would not spend your hard earned money yet.

My '02 QC did this, too, along with fluctuating idle at stop (400-500 rpm's). Mine has a 45RFE tranny. The TPS solved both problems for me.

I have a 2000 QC 4.7 Auto and my truck is doing the exact same thing. The idle can jump from 400 to 600 rpm standing still. Sometimes it will even stall coming to a stop.

I just ordered the TPS from Autozone and will have it tomorrow. I will report back here at the end of the week and let ya know if this fixed the problem.

My '02 QC has the 4 speed auto. I've also wondered if it is the transmission because it always happens after the torque converter locks up, even if I have OD Off Selected. But I have enough of the symptoms listed here, including a RPM fluctuation at idle, that I am going to try the TPS. Is there any adjustment to the sensor that needs to be done after installation?

I replaced my TPS - it slightly changed some of the characteristics, but I think there is something else wrong with my truck. I still get surging or bucking (it feels almost like it is missing on a cylinder) at 40 - 55 mph. Any suggestions what to look at now?

daveo76, if you replaced your TPS, you're going to have to reset your PCM. The procedure for this is:
1. Disconnect + battery cable.
2. Turn ignition key to "start" position and hold for 20 - 30 seconds.
3. Reconnect + battery cable.
4. Start engine, do not touch accelerator pedal.
You'll need to drive your truck a few hundred miles so your PCM can relearn all your sensor parameters. Depending on your daily driving habits, this could take a week or so.
The surging should stop immediately if your TPS was the problem. The learning period sets your base idle voltage from the TPS and all around throttle response should improve as you put the miles on your reset PCM.
If you haven't removed and cleaned your throttle body yet, doing that prior to going through this procedure would benefit you the most.
If you do clean your throttle body, don't forget to remove the IAC motor (that cylindrical thing mounted below your TPS) because there's usually a lot of sludge in the oriface that the IAC motor fits into.
One other thing, how does your transmission shift? Is it relatively smooth? Have you had the transmission flushed and filled with new ATF+4?

Thanks for the response. I've been hoping for advice like this. Yep, just today I was wondering if I needed to reset the PCM - that and cleaning the TB. Is removing the TB a difficult process? I probably need a new gasket?

Transmission: I originally thought my problem was the transmission but someone on the main forum said it sounded like the TPS. My tranny has some of the typical idiosyncracies I've seen posted. It occasionally shifts hard, especially 3 - 2 downshift and it sometimes lurches forward a little after idling at a stop light for a while. I do plan on having it flushed at the dealer when I get it serviced next. Anything I should tell them to look out for?

No, you won't need another gasket. The one on the manifold is a silcone O-ring like (it's not round) gasket that's pressed into a groove in the manifold.
As far as the tranny is concerned, I believe there's a TSB (technical service bulletin) for the symptoms you're describing.
TSB #18-025-01 OCT 2001 A/T - 45RFE/545RFE Harsh Upshifts/Downshifts
I was thinking that you may have older fluid in your tranny. The 45RFE needs highly friction modified fluid like ATF+4 to operate correctly.
Anyway, the fix is to have your PCM & TCM flashed and a "Quick learn" initiated. Good luck.

Guess what folks, you know that fennco plumbing fixture used as a snorkle, well that little item helps with the low end torque and is preventing my tranny from shifting out of overdrive.
I live on the coast of California and the freeways are hilly. The fennco has helped tremendously in the low end giving a bit more power and allowing the motor to catch up with your foot. Also be a bit lighter when cruising on the freeway, gradual acceleration is all you need, the damn motor has enough power to get up just about any freeway hills without shifting.
There is a rather big hill going out of Prunedale on Hwy 101, my truck didn't shift when I went up that hill., I was happy:).
And think of this people if you had a manual 5 speed most likely you probably would shift out of overdrive anyway when climbing some hills. Vehicles aren't made to be in overdrive climbing and towing, so just a though just an opinion. I like the 5 speed. I had an 02 4 speed and it was the same,
My truck is at about 1700 rpm's 65 mph. Yep thats right, when I get to 2000 rpm I am flying those last 300 rpm are 10 mph or 75-76 mph.
3.55's and 265/70/16's
