Subject: Exploded rearend!!??

I have a 2002 Quad Cab Dakota with the 4.7L. Last Friday night, the rearend literally exploded inside the pumpkin. Sounds crazy, but it sounded like a shotgun blast under the truck. Had it towed to the dealership and the rearend is in a million pieces. Anyone else have rearend problems? What could have caused this?

Have enough fluid in it? Do you rag on it (ie: spin the tires on pavement) much?? Those would be the first two things to come to my mind.

It did have plenty of fluid in it. Yes, I gave it hell sometimes. I have placed fourth twice at Twin City Drags in Monroe, La in the footbrake class. I majored in automotive technology the three years I spent at tech school, then worked as an auto tech in a Ford dealership for two years. I've seen burnted clutches in the rearend and even a couple of broken pinion shafts, but nothing like this POS dodge rearend. The ring gear was in five separate pieces, the pinion gear shaft broke, the posi unit was completely obliterated, one axle shaft twisted, the other one was so mangled that they couldn't get it out of the rearend. When I say exploded, I mean it literally exploded. Never seen nothing like it. Shouldn't it have burned the clutches first and turned it into a one-legger or does dodge even have clutches like Ford and Chevy?

Was this an 8.25 or a 9.25 rear end? Was the ring gear itself broke or just teeth gone from it? Don't know about that much damage but I would have to change to a 9.25 rear end. If you had a 9.25, I would have to change the whole housing out. It just couldn't be reuse one with that much damage in it. Good luck.

The ring gear split in half, plus had several teeth missing. I wasn't sure what size the rearend was, but the entire rearend is being replaced under warranty so I can't complain too much. It'll only cost me a $100 deductible. I tried to squeeze more info out of the service writer like does this happen often? or what broke first? you know questions like that. But he just said that it had outlived its life. Outlived its life!?! At 81,000? No wonder Dodge decided to drop the 100,000 mile warranty and go with 70,000 mile warranties. Dodge makes a killer motor, but seriously need to look at their transmission and rearend departments.

Nah, their differentials work fine, something was obviously wrong with yorus to begin with. I have a '92 CC 4x4 V6 with limited-slip differentials (3:92) and I have given that truck total HELL since 30k. It now has 130k on it and the differentials look like new in them. I also have a '95 CC 4x4 V8 with limited-slip 3:55s, and I've given it a little hell, but not as much due to the smaller differentials and the fact that it's my show-truck. It has 107k on it.

Now before you go telling me I haven't given the V6 hell, I grew up in the country. I've four-wheeled with it, pulled people with it, seen how long I could do spins with it, and even towed trailers with it over long distances. I gave it HELL. If yours broke at 81k, something was either not maintained, or something was flawed from the beginning, and it just didn't get noticed until it quit.

Thanks Sephiroth. I hope your right about me just getting a flawed rearend. Maybe this new one will last longer. I'd hate for it to outlive its life at 162,000. Ha ha ha. I wasn't going to dog on your V6. My dad had to put eleven clutchs in his four cylinder Mazda when I turned fifteen and started driving. The last four I had to pay with money earned from a paper route. He obviously had figured out that my driving style was to blame. And I broke a pinion shaft in a 99 Ranger with a 2.5L four banger. But both of them were equipped with five speeds and I was dumping the clutch at five grand on an everyday basis. Then I read about powershifting in a magazine and decided that I just had to learn how to do that! Boy, looking back at that, I'm just ashamed. People must have thought I was an idiot. Thanks for your help. I hope I have better luck with my new Dodge rearend. Have a good day and God bless.

you wrecked a lot of clutches on one car broke a pinion shaft on another truck then you wreck the rear of another truck and you wonder if the rear end is defective? I have been driving for over 30 years and only went through 3 clutches and no rear ends and some of these cars had a LOT more power then your vehicles had. its gotta be you!

Yeah, kiddie's call it "power-shifting". It is properly known as "double-clutching", an essential part of operating a tractor-trailer, and quite easy to learn in a rig, but not as easy to learn in a vehicle with a synchronizer. Tractor transmissions are desynchronized, and you can have a BALL with them once you learn the 'tach-to-speed' for your setup. I remember skipping gears going up and down in a 10-speed 650hp Detroit Freightliner. Man that's fun!!

Two things

First, an exploded pumpkin is a real possibilty. My step dad is a Jaguar Master-Tech (Very few master techs left in this country) He has seen personally one of the supercharged jags come in on a flatbed and the owner saying he was going down the freeway, then BAM no more power. They get it on the lift only to see that there was not even a diff LEFT!!! The pumpkin had exploded and there was no trace of it anymore. All that was left was the destroyed driveshaft and the half-shafts. So it does happen

Second is that power shifting and double clutching are 2 entirely different things Mr Vin diesel.

patch - the service writers (at least at my local stearlership) don't know jack about mechanical stuff. they just write up the diagnosis request based on what you say, and write up whatever the mechanic says was wrong.

(again, this is just from my experiences with my local mob, er, i mean dealership)

OK smart-ass, I'm going on what is used here. If you're referring to just forcing it into gear without using the clutch at all, it will make the clutch last forever, but it'll grind your gears fast.

Now to show off how little you know. Jaguars suck! That's right kiddies, they're American vehicles!! They have been since 1987 when FORD bought them out. Then they proceeded to ruin the legendary cars. The big ruinations were removing the friggin' inline engines, which had nothing BUT top-end, and replacing them with crappy short-stroke V8's and V6's, and then taking away the sexy curves and making them square boxes like Lincolns. Yeah, they've done a half-azzed job of making them sleek again, but they're still weak V8 engines (or V6), and they've even made a tiny-azz 4cyl Jag that looks like a Taurus except in the front. When the HELL did Jaguar EVER produce a 4cyl engine? Never!

Among the other ruinations were replacing the bigger differentials with smaller ones to make a lighter, more fuel-friendly vehicle, which has been known to have problems. I know these FACTS because I have a close friend who owns a jaguar, not a Forduar, and we've fully restored the sucker. Yeah the new Forduars take off much faster, but do you know how many we've run down like they were standing still? That inline engine can pull 200 easily. And the differentials are so weak, that when we replaced it, John had to have one custom-built! His outdated inline airplane engine was too damn powerful and would snap the new ones like twigs.

So before you come on a truck forum talking about a POS Forduar, do your homework. I hate guys who compare modern pieces of crap to vehicles built heavy-duty for work. Now if you'd been talking about a Jaguar, I'd have kept my mouth shut.

Double clutching involves pressing the clutch putting the trans in neutral letting the clutch out, then press the clutch in, match rpm and then putting it in the next gear.

Power shifting involes no rpm-matching throttle actuation, and is generally done at WOT, with very quick shifts to maximize performance

Double clutching is generally never done ANYWHERE near WOT and is used when you want max life out of your trans, or have a non-synch trans.

You're right, I only drove rigs for years. Everybody else on the road is wrong because you say so. The other guy in my division who power-shifted had his tranny go out because it was magic, not the ultimate power-shift he swore by.

Get over yourself. I've given my older truck hell and it never exploded, even at 130k. That's to say I drove with the accelerator on the floor most of the time. I was young and stupid. Still, never had a problem in that thing. Comparing anything like a turbo-charged Jag to a heavy-duty pickup is like apples to oranges. I mean heck if you wanna' do that, then I'll tell you I drove a Freightliner with over 5mil miles on it. Think you can get that out of any normal gasoline engine?

I have to agree with MoFin. You have no clue and your still trying to act like he's wrong. What he is saying is POWER SHIFTING and DOUBLE CLUTCHING are two DIFFERENT things. You are saying that they are the same; "properly known as".

you take the truck to the Drag strip, place fourth at least twice, and then complain that the rear grenades?

Under acceleration the pinion gear tries to climb the ring gear. You should have learned that from your schooling.
When the ring gear climbs it places stresses upon the pinion shaft. If there is excessive play in the differential bearings or pinion bearings you will snap the pinion. Then all hell will break loose just as you have described.
I agree with "Oh My God"--- It must be you and your conditions that you choose to drive.

Hey Bowtie,

I do understand the principles of rearends and how they operate. I did learn that in school. But I also learned through school and personal life experiences that your vehicle is only as strong as its weakest link. Most of the time that is the clutches as they are designed to slip and wearout long before their metal counterparts. I figured the clutches in the transmission would have went by now or the posi would have given up the ghost and turned my rearend into a one-legger. Clutches lasting longer than ring and pinions are just unusual in my opinion. I checked my transmission fluid two days before all this happened and it was just as pretty as could be without any hint of burnt smell. I'm suprised at that considering the abuse I've given it. I also talked to my offshore mechanic who worked at a Dodge dealership for several years before coming out here. He swears that they were changing two to four rearends a week. Just food for thought. I'm going to get my new one put in and continue dragging. But I'll be putting aside a few bucks for when it goes out. Dana 44 from Currie sounds good!

1) Your tranny can be full, and your differential dry

2) You don't use tranny-fluid in a differential
