lets face the facts here. Dodge cant build a v8 that can get good milage. My truck averages 10 mpg combined city and highway. The best calculated milage on the highway was 14 mpg. Now for those of you say "what did you expect from a v8 truck" or "you dont buy a v8 for gas milage just power" heres some comparison for you
On the same trip The truck rated 14 mpg my dad was folowing me in his 5500lb 1970 cadillac deville. It has a 400 hp 500ci engine. My friend was behind him in my 5.0 86 mustang.
The caddy got 18 mpg on that trip and the mustang got 31 mpg.
These trucks are pigs

hi.
i want to compare the mpg of a car to that of a truck.

apples to oranges

if i take 1/2 the mass out of my truck, reduce the frontal area by about 1/2, reduce drag by at least a half and put little tiny tires with low inertia and friction on it, and drop my 4 wheel drive stuff, sure my mpg will be fantastic like a 1980 mustang.

trucks / 4x4's have everything going against them for efficiency but thats the way, uh huh uh huh, i like it. not too many mustangs going off roading and hauling boats. gotta see the big picture kids.

Besides, BrianY 02 R/T, the fact that the Caddy and 5.0 were FOLLOWING you means they were drafting somewhat, especially with your (much) larger frontal profile. Switch places and tell me if it's the same - I'd be interested to know.

1999 4X4 5.2 Auto = 13 mpg city, 16 mpg highway. In winter each of these drops by about 1 mpg. I think your dad & friend were having some fun with you telling you he got 18 with that motor. A friend of mine had an Eldorado with that motor in it and got like 8/12 city/hwy. As for the Mustang, it weighs alot less and is more aerodynamic than a truck. I had a '91 Cougar with the same motor in it as the Mustang (detuned somewhat) and only got at best around 23 on the highway. You should be getting better mileage though. How long has it been since you did a tuneup?

Oh oh we have some one who has been watching too much nascar. We were not driving 2 feet off each others bumper the whole trip. In fact if any one of us was nascar style drafting, it was me in the dakota following some big trucks. My dad was at the most time 400 feet or so behind me. not close enough to draft anything. Now the mustang has always got good milage and I just threw that in becouse it was on the same trip.

If you want to talk frontal area and all that crap. The last time I looked at the 1970 caddy the frontal area less aerodynamic than the dakota. The wheight of the truck is about 4300 lbs and has an overdrive transmition. The caddy porks out at 5500+lbs and has no overdrive with a 3.42 gear in a rear end that looks like it came out of a dump truck.

Now before some one else gives me a sorry ass excuse to why I and others are getting bad milage, I will say that I have a tonue cover on the truck so dont tell me to drop the tale gate. And I dont led foot the thing everywhere. I should not see the gas gage move when I go and meet the boys for coffee only 10 miles away.

sorry for the long post and the ranting and raving but too maney of you are relying on your over head display or you have not owned anything else but a dodge truck in the past. I used to never complain about millage and always sacraficed that over horse power, but this truck drinks way too much gas for the whimpy 255 hp it has

TimberwolfIguess you posted at the same time I was typing my last post.
The truck Has less than 20000 miles on it and should not have needed a tune up. The caddy at the time was freshly tuned and also had new head, intake and exuast gaskets. It was runing cherry.
My dad has calculated the milage on every car he has had since the early 60s or so. He has also calculated most of my cars.( and I have owned more than 20 since I was 15.) He did the math on all three of those cars. (two times) Before I repaced the gaskets and tuned the caddy it was only getting about 8 mpg. As I had stated in another thread my 471 hp 81 z28 got better milage than the dakota.

Now lets throw all the numbers away and add it up like this. The truck and the caddy have about the same size gas tanks and the mustang abit smaller. The truck finnished the trip on empty, the caddy`s gage was just above empty and the mustang had about 1/2 a tank left.
Maybe there is somthing wrong with my truck, Idont know. But some others on this board have complained about the same thing. like I said on my previous post, I have never complained about milage untill I got this truck.

I almost forgot.

One day I took my friens 69 chevelle to work to do some work to it and gave him my truck for the day. He used to say "you should try driving the chevelle around before you complain about milage" Now the chevelle has an lt5 350 thats factory rated at 350 hp. it also has 4:10 gears,no over drive and a huge ac pump. When he droped the truck off later that day he said " That thing is a pig and I dont know how you can afford to drive that thing.

Sorry there BrianY.
I have owned in the past the following:
88 S-10 v-6 17 hwy, 15 city
86 Full size Blazer v-8 14 hwy, 9 city
92 Ranger v-6 19 hwy, 15 city

Out of the above trucks the Dakota that I know own tops them all in mileage and in fit and finish. I don't have a dash doohicky that tells me my mileage. So I have to hit the trip meter everytime I put gas in it and do the math.

While I'm at it I'm going to say that V-8's do get better fuel mileage than V-6's or 4 cylinders. The reason is V-8's make more power and don't have to work as hard to get down the road. Maybe I'm all wronge, and if I am then would a credited enginer step forward and explain why.

In fact this thread make no sence, seeing as how you prob. have a lower geared rear end than everyone else.

Yes the truck does have the 3.92 gear so that would explain the better milage soom of the other trucks are getting. I guess the point I was trying to get across is that I expected better from a computer controled late modle v8 than what this thing gets. And the fact that alot of the other cars and trucks I have owned in the past got better milage. This is my first dodge anything(probably my last). Ive always had gm and the occasional ford thrown in to the mix. Most of them where v8s and some of them where geared pretty deep.
The one thing I forgot to mention is that trip was straight highway with no stops at about 65 mph.

The thread is real gas milage as oposed to what the overhead thing says. I posted my milage and how I feel about it. I get a little tired of people telling me I have a heavy foot or the what did you expect from a v8 crap.

I love this truck. The way it looks and drives is awsome. Thats why I bought it. The chevy and ford trucks are to big or to small and the small trucks dont come with a v8. I find it just to hard on gas for what it is.

Sorry if I ofended anyone but I m just telling it like it is
Brian

For real in 2000 Me and my buddy drove my 99R/t regular cab bone stock from detroit to norwalk dragway put down 7 passes 15.0s and drove home. We refilled the truck back in detroit and calculated our milage to be 22mpg including the racing. I didn't think that was all that bad.

I missed that you have a 3.92 rear. That probably explains the highway mileage, but you should get more than 10 in the city. Oh well, Dodge has never been known for it's gas mileage. I would rather drive a good looking Dodge that gets a few less mpg's than a fuel efficient, butt ugly Chevrolet. Oh, by the way, no offense taken.

You could buy a toyota tacoma for 10,000 more and get a 4mpg bump up. depending on how high it is and tire choice. I think the dakota is a better value. more bang for the buck. You could buy a honda insight and get 78 mpg. Kind of hard to off road though. Hate to have a guy in a dakota hit me while im in the insight. probley have no sight after that. Did you really think it was going to get good gas mileage to begin with .

If I wanted an econo box, I would have bought an econo box. Oh yeah sure maybe a mustang may get better milage than me but its also slower. I know I haven't been beaten by one yet. Not even with my wifes 5.9 grand cherokee.

oooohhhh I have an idea.....Trade your truck for an amish horse and buggy. They get great mileage. But then we will have to listen to you bitch about the horse farting all the time, and your amish wife having a big bush. All I am trying to say is, That you will bitch about anything. your trucks gas, If you had a honda you would bitch about the power. If you had an amish wife you would want her to shave her jungle bush. it is in your nature to bitch. Take the dress off, put some chap stick on that pussy of yours, and get back in the kitchen.

WEll Im movin on up. It's goin from consistent high 11s to consistent 13s. Even better... it's becoming more forgiving to WOT, getting on it hard is not moving the gauge as fast as it did the first few tanks. I can actually enjoy that V8 a bit more now and still get the kind of mileage I was getting in the beginning with the cruise set at 65 and my foot off the pedal.

Im thinkin with 3200 miles on the truck things are starting to mesh a bit more in the engine now. Could also be the fact that we're hitting a warmer patch of weather near me. Who knows, maybe in another 2-3 tanks Ill be seeing these high teens some of you keep boasting about.
