Subject: Rebuild oir Reman - Opinions?

Hi - The tranny is dying :-( '92 Longbed with a 318 and automagic trans (A500); 175,000mi. I have been looking around at reman'd trannies, and I know they are better but is it worth the price diff if you plan on keeping the truck about a year or a little more? I can get a guy to rebuild my tranny for $500-600 plus $100 for the torque converter; half a reman price. I don't know how long a rebuild lasts, or how dependable on average that they are. Any thoughts? If I do a reman I am pretty much married to the truck for 2 years or so to recoup the $ in miles.

Also, is there anything I should be sure to have done during the rebuild that might get overlooked? Something the 92 a500 tranny is known to need beyond the usual rebuild?

Anyone have a clean 96 4x4 extended cab v8 auto to sell around the NJ area? That's what I really want and why I am thinking this truck will only last me another year or so.

Thanks in advance for any helpful opinions! I am kinda torn about what I am doing... obviously :-)

Wal

I would go for a 500-600 rebuild if it is from a quality source. If it quits before you are ready to get rid of a vehicle, rebuild it again. Where I live a rebuild will cost around $1500. I'm not sure on the cost of a remanufactured tranny.

Are you sure you have the A500? I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that the v6 had the A500 and the v8 had the 518A. Did you swap in a V8?

unless I read the service manual wrong, it had my truch as having an A500. The truck is all original. I'll have to double check.

the 318 came with a 44RH which is a a500 with a couple more friction disks in the clutch packs

thanks for the detailed info. I checked it all out and got estimates. I made the decision to replace the truck. I'm putting up a new post with a question about that one.

Thanks :-)
