Subject: Dyno results for 4.7L

I took my truck, 02 Dak CC+ AUTO, to Professional Engine Service in Mobile, AL to dyno it.
Best run with IAT sensor in CAI tube:
Max RWHP=205.3
Max RWTQ=265.6
Best run with IAT sensor in stock location:
Max RWHP=200.8
Max RWTQ=259.4
The following is a list of my mods:
360 Intakez, TPS adj, removed clutch fan, removed 3rd cat, Autolite 3923, Flowmaster 70 series single in/dual out, Motive 4.10 w/LSD, Fastman true 68mm TB. Used 87 octane.
I hope this provides some useful information on how much difference some mods help. It appears just relocating the IAT does make a difference. This was the first time I dyno'd my truck.
According to some previous post, if this formula is correct, my truck should be making 257HP(RWHP*1.25=HP@Flywheel) at the flywheel. I don't know how to post the graph and charts, sorry.

Great run.

Using a 25% driveline loss, your crank numbers would be:

273.7 HP peak crank
354.1 TQ peak crank

Your above formula you found is flawed. You must DIVIDE not multiply.

205.3 @ wheels DIVIDE by .75 (25% driveline loss) = 273.7

I actually think the driveline loss is more like 15% but you can use 25% loss if that makes you happy. At 15% though, your crank figures are:

241.5 HP / 312.4 TQ

(205.3 @ wheels Div by .85 (15% loss) = 241.5)

You can do a "coast down" measurement on a Dyno Jet dyno so that you can pin-point the driveline loss if you really want to know what it is.

Called a pal of mine at a Dyno jet shop. He said "18-20% coast-down loss on most pickups."

So split the diff between your original 25% and my 15%, then go w/ 20%.

205.3 RWHP Divide by .80 (20% loss) = 256.6 crank HP

265.6 RWTQ Divide by .80 = 332 crank TQ

Whats stock rating? 240 HP / 300 TQ?

Good numbers.

CThomp: Yeah I was surprised also. I left the stock IAT in place and bought another IAT to put in the air intake tube, just incase I was not happy with the results. Between dyno runs I simply move the cable from one IAT to the other to see what difference it would make.

mb: Thanks for the help with the math! I was confused about how to get the crank HP. The dyno operator said about 18% driveline loss was normal for an auto. Yes, the stock rating is 235HP/295TQ.

No matter how you slice it, those are good numbers for bolt on mods.

205.3 div by .82 (18%) = 250.3
265.6 div by .82 (18%) = 323.9

It is responding well to those mods.

I was a bit thrown when I noticed your original 25% 257 figure was right on the 20% 256.6 figure. We just by chance landed on the same calculation even though we took different routes!

Anyhow, good runner. I bet w/ those 4:10's that it scoots.

remember MikeD's dyno run? Turned the IAT Adjuster down to the second to coldest mark and gained 25 wrhp... impressive!! (but he has a very good list of bolt ons)

From the local dyno shops here, i have heard that you should expect about a 13-17% for manuals (less clutches) and 15-20% for automatics.

Yeah, RWHP*1.25=crank HP is the same as RWHP/.80=crank HP. The 1.25 number in the first equation is the inverse(1/x button on the calculator) of .80
Just invert and multiply.

Yes, I love my 4.10s! I highly recommend them if you have 3.55s.

I saw your 1.25 as "25%" With my .80 being "20%" So to be the inverse it would have to be .75 to equal 1.25... Confusing enuf!?

No matter, looks like we have a good enough number to be pleased.

Best part anyhow is the post topic. As this real world test on the relocate is 1st rate.

Yeah I was shocked that the little IAT box that everyone said was junk actually jumped me up that much rwhp. But I got the B&G flash so I'm able to run those numbers w/o the IAT box now. I've tried using now w/ the other bolt-ons I've done and it doesn't seem to work as well as it did before...but if u don't have a flash that adds fuel then that box really does work!

Did you have a big MPG loss with the 4.10 gears, and how much higher are your RPM's running with them? Been thinking about swapping from the 3.55's to the 4.10's but wanted to hear what someone else though first.

2001 4.7lt Quad Cab auto 3.55 open dif.

One thing I noticed with my Iat in my intake is it makes a noticable difference where I live in AZ 100+ temps, but when i go up north 70s up there feels the same mine should be in the 250HP range at crank, I have pretty much same mods.

I live on the West side (surprise/El Mirage) but work in Central.

I agree with you on the temp, I forgot to mention the intake air temperature during the dyno was around 98 deg F. and quite humid in Mobile, AL.

i ve had my 00 4.7 cc auto with 3.55 rear,dynoed, the mods include air filter right off the tb, with iat in between,the tb is a 65mm that has been ported and cat back magnaflow duals. and the numbers...at 2500ft. and 91.2 deg 4200 rpms when the speedlimiter shut it down 202rwhp, with 286rwtq. im gonna get a 68mm ported tb soon, so hope that helps the numbers.

It comes up every time on my calculator.

Very impressive numbers for such a little modification. It would have been nice to have seen the before and after numbers. I think the actual HP numbers for the 4.7L is closer to 250HP. I have suspected all along that the 4.7L actually was producing more HP than the advertised 235 because a stock 4.7L automatic R/C w/3.55's will out run a 5.9L R/T RC w/3.92's just about everytime. It would be hard for the 4.7L to even come close to the 5.9L R/T if it was making less HP than the R/T. Either the 5.9L is making less than 250HP or the 4.7L is making more than 235HP or both. Before I can believe that your modifications actually made any significant increases in your HP I would have to see a before and after mods comparison.

The PEAK HP number may be lower on the stock 4.7 engine vs the stock 5.9 engine but that doesn't tell the whole story. The 4.7 engine produces it's power over a wider rpm range. This wider rpm range means that there is more "area under the curve". That's a tough concept for alot of people to understand. In reality, peak numbers don't mean much at all.

Thank you Duner! I've been trying to tell people that for months. If you add up all the HP numbers at incremental RPM points on your dyno (whether 4.7 or 5.9), whoever has the most in the end, wins! I'd start at either 2K or 3K RPM...
