I have been looking at intakes for a while now
and havenot been satisfied with either the
price of some systems or the materials of
others. PVC or whatever you guys are using
doesnt impress me much. I wanted steel, so I
"trucked" over to my local big rig dealer and
bought a 90 degree 3" elbow pipe with 8 inch
"legs". went to Canadian tire and bought a 3"
mateing clamp, a pvc grommet and a double
ended male union splicer.
Here is the link (Im sorry i cant post it, im an
idiot when it comes to these computers).

http://photos.yahoo.com/teamfast55

Go into the photo album and the first two
pictures are what you are looking for.

Everything is done exept for fitting the filter
wich will require some cutting of the length of
that pipe. Its on order and should arrive in 4
days!

Pipe: 25 bucks
Grommet: 5 bucks
Male fitting (Union splicer): 4 Bucks
3" pipe mate with clamps: 4 Bucks
K&N filter $69 Bucks
Total price: 107 Bucks (Canadian) You
americans should be able to do it for 25!

What is the brass fitting for (photo 1)?

I really like the way that looks!!!

Conig - What do you mean by silencers? I would think that replacing stock air would not have to much of an impact.

Why do you need a union splicer?

I didn't think that anything tied into the intake tube. I've had the stock airbox and hat off and didn't think that any additional lines connected to the stock system.

Thanks for the picks and info.

Be sure to let us know how it works for ya!

EGR = exhaust gas recirculation. Thankfully we don't have that. I believe this fitting vents excess crankcase pressure (mostly oil fumes).

It also vents pressure out of the crankcase. That looks great TEAMFAST. The Crappy Tire here carries all the K&N cones as of last year, they are around $70-$90. Also, nice pics from the auto show, I noticed you got some pics of that purple hemi challenger. I ran out of camera space! Going back next Saturday to take some more. Are the other car pics on the album with your intake 1:18s? This is crazy.... but... I just bought little muscle rims off ebay for my 1:18 dak.

Use sheet aluminum, it would be easy to bend and fit into the corner. Also it would complement the steel intake. Make sure you take out the rubber piece next to the radiator to give you more air flow.

Ain't that rubber piece there to prevent major water to get sprayed in the engine bay ?

Nice setup at by all means :) I knew this was no rocket science.. just calculate your sweet spot for revs and make sure you get that intake tuned

Teamfast,

Nice looking setup!

I have a couple of questions.

1. Why keep your airbox? would you get better airflow if the tube was connected directly to the TB?

2. Is there an advantage to the steel tube besides looks? I thought that the steel would conduct heat as the engine compartment heats up and hurt the performance.

Kevin, goto your Mack Truck dealer and ask there, I was referred to a small shop but they will know. Ask for a 3" 90 degree elbow exhaust with at least 8 inch legs.

Peter, I kept the airhat because finding a z tube would have been impossible to keep it in the budget. besides i doubt there would be any real gain (its all about the filter)

The steel tube is an advantage over pvc or abs whatever because it is a good conductor of heat. It heats up fast but also cools fast, unlike thick plastic which holds heat. Think about it, when air is circulating through the pipe and fresh cold air is hitting it from all sides, its going to be cold. Only when the truck is parked will it heat up.
I didnt go this route for this main reason, it was mostly for looks but its a bonus.

The gains are awesome! Im not sure about mileage yet...i never drop below half a tank in winter.

Nice looking intake.

Here's kind of an off the wall thought about that steel elbow. What do you think would happen if you wound a coil of tubing and plumbed it to the cold side of your A/C compressor? I usually sit with the A/C on in the staging lanes then shut it down when I pull up to the line. How much effect do you think that residual cooling would have on the intake charge?

hmmmmm.

Middy.

Trying out some html skills....

MAKE IT A Z-TUBE!!

Thanks to teamfast, I tried out this contraption and it worked great...but...I also found out that by buying an additional elbow exhaust pipe, you can easily make it a 'Z-TUBE'.

I mounted mine up like teamfast (worked great), and I'm going for the other pipe tomorrow.

Though the fit and finish may not be that of the commercial products, for a budget of $100 US you can have a steel intake Z-TUBE and get rid of the intake 'hat' or silencer.

Here are the part numbers:

1 K&N RE-0810 Cone Filter $50
4 3.5" Hose clamps $2.50
2 3" P207326 Donaldson Co. Exhaust elbow pipes $25 each

If you happen to get the same pipe, cut 5" off one end, and for the other, flip over the hat and match the pattern exactly. Then mate the two with a grommet, or if you are a great welder, put the two together.

It's so easy.

It won't have the absolute seamless flow that a commercial intake would, but who wants to pay $275 for an extra 2% (note: my guess) advantage of the claimed 10hp gain (probably .2 hp).

If anyone ever get's this one on a dyno, please let us know...
