Hoosier,

I have a Volant system on my truck. I like it because it has a plastic intake pipe (promotes cool air intake) It made quite a difference in performance on my truck.

There are other systems one is by Airrad but it has a metal tube which is more likely to heat as your engine heats up which will hurt performance.

The cost of the Volant system is about $260.00 from www.truckperformance.com

K&N is working on one for our truck but it is not available yet.

The install is easy.

If you would like to see a picture there is one on my website.

I purchased mine through them. I forget the price,,but it was considerably cheaper than similiar setups,,and came w/K&N filter. Almost same as a Z-tube,,but this one is in two pieces,,which will make it easier to install, and position in the engine bay.
Definitely felt pwr gain,,and the growl from under the hood is awesome.

I got this on ebay and works fine, excellent sound, and 3 mpg increase. Not to mention, reasonable price.

I bought a K&N Generation II for a Jeep 4.7 and made a few simple adjustments, for example, sawing the end of the intake tube where the filter fits on. This allowed the air intake tube to fit. It added alot of horsepower and it sucks more air then anything I have heard yet.

You Can build your own, and for LESS than what Double D says. Search the old archives for 'homebrew intakes'.

I've got one on my '01 4.7 5spd, and it added low end, MPG, smoother thru out the range, sound, etc.

Anyone heard anything about the Mopar Performance intake? I've seen a pic of it and it replaces the stock airhat plus has a cool air dam blocking out the heat from the engine. I'm thinkin about takin my Airaid off...the metal tube heats up too fast like that dude said.

T'd be cool to build one using ABS plastic and one of those 10" quick cold filters from intense performance. I kinda wish i'd have that of that before I bought mine. Maybe down the road.

Get the 360 Air Intakez. Don't beleive the guys that say the Volant or the ABS Plastic Homebrews keeps the air cooler. They don't. They are black and heat up as fast as the aluminum ones. I know, we did a side by side comparison between a ABS homebrew and my 360. We placed thermo couples (small thermometers on an end of a long wire) and observed the temperatures from hand-held readouts in the cabs as we drove all around the deserts here outside of San Diego on a hot day. The 360's internal air temperature was the SAME as the black plastic sewer pipe rig (75 degrees). the outside air temp that day was 79 degrees and the ambient air temp outside the matching 9" K&N filters was 77 degrees on the filter side of our hot air deflectors and 90 degrees on the radiator side of our hot air deflectors. We used two (almost) identical trucks, one was a '01 CC and the other a '01 QC (DiegoDak's). DiegoDak and I (Dr.Dak) are biochemists and work in a lab together (I'm actually her boss)...beleive me when I say we did a scientific study on this! DiegoDak then trashed her homebrew and bought a 360, reason: It looked better (DiegoDak is a girl), and the 360 (and the likes) have better bends to them.

What about CARB certification? Is it necessary in California? I didn't think that the 360 Air Intakez was certified, but the Volant was.

K&N has a 14 inch dia...3 inch high open elemnt air cleaner...I bought it for 90 dollars, is a kit. Was good for about 15 horses!! and 1 mph top end, and 1 mpg fuel!! If you want number i will give it to you. All I had to do was to shorten my upper radiator hose by about 1 inch and move a vacume tube...thats it

RE: My thoughts on air intakes

Although I don't profess to being the sharpest knife in the drawer, I have have to question the accuracy of performance claims of some of the homebrew intakes, at least for the 4.7. I don't doubt that there are some increased HP gains but in combination with better fuel economy? The 4.7 has been out for 3 years now and below is my repsonse from K&N as to why/when they will have a drop in kit available for the 4.7 (Jan 24/02).
**************************************8
Our R&D department has been designing and testing kits for the Dodge 4.7 Durangos and Dakotas for several months. At this time, testing has not brought results that meet our standards for improved horsepower. We have some prototypes currently in testing now and if all goes well hope to have them in production in the very near future.
Unfortunately, though, until and unless the results of the current tests are positive and meet our standards, we cannot estimate when production will begin.
Please check back periodically or check our online application guide at http://www.knfilters.com/appinq.htm for update.
*******************************************
So I ask the question, if K&N who are performance specialists with decent R&D background and experience, have not been able to come up up with a kit that meets their standards, how come the shadetree mechanics can?

Not meaning to offend anyone but I probably have.

Cheers ..... Audie from Ontario

I agree the intake by its self is very little gain. After I had done my exhaust, TB porting, IAT adjuster to help out the fuel mixture and the cams You couldn't pay me to take it off.

2001 RC 4.7 5sp 9.25" 3.92 LSD
Ported 68mm TB, IAT adjuster, 3" flowmaster cat back, TPS @ .76V, 4" cold air, Roadmaster active suspention, Removed Third cat, Electric fan Convertion, HO cams.
Working on adjustable fuel pressure with return.

One more vote for the 360 Intakez intake. I got mine on my 4.7 and while I do not see the massive preformance gains that everyone it talking about I do get a little better pull and a sweet SWEET sound from my engine.

And for the LAST time, A METAL INTAKE DOES NOT HEAT THE AIR AND MAKE YOU LOSE PREFORMANCE!!! The air moves WAY to fast for it to heat up beond a degree or two MAX which if you are going to be an ass meanes you lose about 0.00000001% hp.

One word though I bought my intake straight from 360 and it did take about 3 weeks to get to me. But he does HAND BEND all of the pipes, and he only does this once YOU have placed the order. So that my be some of the reason why the turnaround is kinda slow.

360 all the way. Saves you some good money and you get a GREAT intake.

Always Thankfull,
Ben
