WE HAVE A 1996 DODGE PICKUP-1500 SERIES-3.9-V6.
WE PURCHASED THIS TRUCK BRAND NEW AND DIDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT UNTIL IT HIT ABOUT 30,OOO
MILES. WE WERE ON THE INTERSTATE AND ATTEMPTED TO PASS ANOTHER CAR AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE OIL PRESSURE DROPPED TO 0. I PULLED OVER AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND LET IT SET FOR A FEW MINUTES.
UPON RESTARTING THE ENGINE THE PRESSURE WENT BACK TO NORMAL. THERE WEREN'T ANY PROBLEMS UNTIL WE HAD 69'000 MILES ON THE TRUCK AND THATS WHEN I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND THE OIL PRESSURE
AGAIN DROPPED TO 0. THERE WAS A SLIGHT BANGING NOISE SO I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND COASTED TO A STOP. I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND COULD FIND NO LEAKS,CHECKED THE OIL AND IT WAS FINE. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED HOME AND AFTER A FEW DAYS I DECIDED TO CRAWL UNDER THE TRUCK TO SEE IF I'D MISSED ANYTHING. UPON INSPECTING THE OIL PAN I NOTICED A
SLIGHT BULGE ON THE SIDE OF THE PAN CLOSE TO WHERE
IT BOLTS ON. I DRAINED THE OIL AND REMOVED THE PAN AND FOUND THE PISTON MOUNTING BOLTS AND NUTS LAYING IN THE BOTTOM. THE BULGE ON THE SIDE OF THE PAN HAPPENED WHEN THE PISTON CAME UNBOLTED FROM THE CRANK AND STRUCK THE PAN. I CALLED THE DEALER ABOUT THIS AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULDN'T HELP ME BUT I COULD TOW IT IN AND THEY WOULD CHARGE ME $65.00 PER HOUR TO TEAR IT DOWN AND TELL ME WHATS WRONG WITH THE TRUCK(8 HOURS LABOR)
I TOLD THEM THAT ITS EVIDENT WHATS WRONG WITH IT.
SO I CALLED DODGE ABOUT IT AND AFTER GOING THRU THE SPILL ABOUT MY PROBLEM I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD NEVER HAD A COMPLAINT LIKE THAT BEFORE SO THERES NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT. I ASK THEM FOR SOMETHING IN WRITING AND WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO GET A LAWYER TO GET ANYTHING IN WRITING. I WAS ABLE TO REPLACE THE PISTON AND CONNECTING ROD MYSELF AND THE TRUCK RAN FINE UNTIL IT HIT 130,OOO MILES AND THEN THE #6 PISTON UNBOLTED.(THE FIRST ONE WAS THE #2) I REPLACED IT ALONG WITH THE OIL PUMP AND NEW CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS. THE ENGINE SOUNDS FINE UNTIL IT IDLES FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES AND THEN THE PRESSURE DROPS TO 0, THERES NO NOISES OR ANYTHING. SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTART AND IT DOES THE SAME THING.
I THINK THAT ALL THIS IS DEFECTIVE BOLTS AND NUTS OR THEY WEREN'T PROPERLY TORQUED AT THE FACTORY.
BUT THE NEIGHBORS THINK THAT I HAVE A BEAUTIFUL RED YARD ORNAMENT I MAY EVEN FILL THE BED WITH DIRT AND PLANT SOME ROSE BUSHES IN IT. SO IN SHORT, STAY AWAY FROM DODGE PRODUCTS NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY LOOK. LOOKS DON'T GET YOU UP AND DOWN THE ROAD.........

AHA!
So I'm not alone with the problem with my oil pressure!

My '98 Dakota (318) has over the past months started to warn me to check the guages. When I turn a hard corner or brake hard, the guage drops to zero and the warning comes on.

I took it to my mechanic and he proposed we take it in stages (the same things everyone else who posted here has been through):

1. check the oil pressure with a manual guage and replace the sending unit if necessary. (with mine, the manual guage showed changing oil pressure - i replaced the sending unit myself as a first step)
2. drop the pan, clean or replace the oil pick-up hose and/or its screen. (mine was clear)
3. replace the oil pump (don't know if mine was working well or not...replaced it just in case).

$300.00 later, my guage still moves, but, so far, no warning light. I'll give it a few days and miles - I expect it will recurr. I have been told by other Dodge owners, however, that they see their guage move with RPMs and driving conditions. Hope mine is fixed and operating normally!

I'VE ALREADY POSTED A PROBLEM I'M HAVING WITH MY 96 DODGE 1500 RAM PICKUP LOOK FOR (JAY) I ALMOST WROTE A BOOK!!!!!!

THE QUESTION I HAVE NOW IF THERES ANYBODY OUT THERE WHOS HAD PISTONS TO COME UNBOLTED AS YOU'RE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY... IT STARTED WITH LOSE OF OIL PRESSURE,BUT IF YOU START DRIVING THE TRUCK ITS OK UNTIL YOU STOP AT A RED LIGHT AND THE PRESSURE WOULD FALL TO ALMOST 0, BUILDS BACK UP WHEN DRIVING...... I'M GETTING OFFF MY QUESTION SO I'LL MAKE IT SHORT, I'VE HAD THE #1 AND THE #6 PISTON TO COME UNBOLTED (BOTH AT DIFFERENT TIMES) YOU WILL FIND THE NUT AND BOLT THAT CAME LOOSE IN PERFECT CONDITION LAYING IN THE BOTTOM OF THE OIL PAN. THE ONE THATS STILL ATTACHED TO THE CONNECTING ROD WILL BE BENT UP AND THE ROD BEARING CAP WILL BE IN THE SAME CONDITION. I KNOW THAT THIS COULDN'T BE A ONCE IN A LIFETIME CASE. I'M THINKING THAT THIS IS FAULTY WORKMANSHIP (AT THE FACTORY,ASSEMBLED IN MEXICO) OR DEFECTIVE PARTS, ANYBODY WHO MAY HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM PLEASE RESPOND.... THANKS

This problem is caused by carbon buildup in the oil pan. There will be little sandlike pieces of carbon that collect in the bottom of the pan, after driving for so many miles they get sucked into the oil pickup, and shut off oil circulation... I have seen this many times on magnum motors, but amazingly no engine damage has occurred. usually drop the pan, clean out the carbon, and replace the pickup will solve it. I dont know what causes the carbon though.

I have a 2000 dodge 1500 318, I also have the same problem with the check gauges lite coming on and my oil pressure dropping to 0. It started at about 47000 miles. I pulled over, turned off the engine and then re-started it, lite went out oil pressure normal again. This happened off and on until about 135000 miles. I changed my oil every 3000 to 4000 miles. the last time it happened the oil pressure did not com back up nor did the lite go out. I had my truck towed to a good mechanic friend and i bought a remanufactured long block, I put a high volume oil pump, new sending unit. New engine ran nice for 200 miles during brack-in, and then the problem started again. check gauges lite and no oil pressure. I had the truck towed back to my friend the mechanic so we could figure out the problem. I'm pissed. Anybody have any ideas? Kevin the oil pan can be removed without raising the motor. 1 hour counting draining the oil and cleaning pan and reinstalling.

I have a 1998 Dodge Durango 5.2 L 4x4 91000 miles

Got into a front end accident that damaged the radiator and air conditioning compontents but got those fixed and replaced along with all the body damage. Well, after a month and 5000 dollars later you think they would have test drove the car for me ??? RIGHT?? I guess not, cuz just after i leave the auto body shop my check guages light came on and oil pressure was dropping to zero then jumping back up then dropping and then it eventually just stayed down. So assuming the worst i pulled over and checked the oil..it was at a safe level, but a quart short. I thought it safe to drive back to the mechanic who gave me the worst scare of my life. There was this horrible clicking noise that sounded like a snapped piston rod clanging in the cylinder, but luckly after adding some fresh oil, it dissapeared and made it apparent that it was only the hydrolic oil pump trying to pump oil but there was nothing there. I have to to discover what the cause of this lack in oil pressure is. From reading these posts, im gonna guess that the month or so the car sat getting body work had allowed particles in the oil to either build up or settle in a way to clog the oil pump. Any help with this issue would be of great help. Thank you.

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with a 360. The truck has about 136,000 miles on it and the truck is fine until it reaches operating tempature. The truck will be sitting idling and the oil pressure gage will drop to 0 and then when you touch the gas and start moving it will go back to normal. It will only do this when the truck in idling, as soon as you give it gas it is fine. The truck runs fine besides this annoying little problem. It is possible that this is just the sending unit?

Jay, I am sorry but if you are so inept as to not notice that your engine isn't firing all the cylinders, the crap is your fault. Furthermore, when you fixed the original problem, it would be common-sense to me to at least LOOK at the others to make sure they weren't loose, even if you didn't test them with a wrench. I mean if it happened on one, who's to say it wouldn't happen on another? Granted, this does sound funny, but I have NEVER heard of this before, EVER. I also think I'd have noticed when the rod slammed into the oil-pan so dang hard it dented it. I woulda' broken it down right on the side of the road.

The previous post is on target, carbon buildup. This buildup gets started under the piston top. I guess not enough oil flow to clean it off so the oil and carbon crystalize into little pebbles. It will be more severe if you tow or the engine runs on the hot side from a partial plugged radiator. Rev it high a few times and more of these pebbles fall off. Eventually enough to clog the pickup screen. When you turn the engine off some of the carbon that is held to the screen by suction falls back to the bottom of the pan so when you restart, the oil can get through the screen again until enough carbon pebbles can once again be sucked to the screen. Take the pan down, replace the picup tube (easier than cleaning it because 3/4 of the screen surface is covered by thin metal). You be good for another 80 thousand miles. Remedy can be found sometimes by changing the oil more often or try a different brand. That is as long as its not running hot (no coolant issues). I have taken many of these apart and most have a good amount of this carbon 3/4 clogged at about 100 thousand miles using good oil at 3000 mile oil changes. If you are rebuilding the eng, use rod bearings with the center grove all the way around (grove through both bearing caps). This supplies constant oiling to the piston full circle. For some reason that prevent the carbon buildup.

I don't do alot of mechanic work and it sounds like my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with the 360 that i posted earlier has this problem. Does the motor have to be unbolted from the mounts and jacked up to do this? And how hard is this to do?

i don't know about the 360, but the 318 i was able to remove the pan without lifting the motor, is was tight though. i would leave yourself at least and hour to do the job.

I recently bought a 1999 dodge dakota 4X4 with a 5.2L. I had a similar problem the other day. I accelerated rapidly from a dead stop, and let off about 60 mph, as soon as I did this the check guages light came on, I looked down at the guages and the oil pressure guage was on zero. I put it in neutral, and shut the truck off and pulled over to the side of the road. I checked the oil and it was fine. Decided what the hell, restarted it again and the oil pressure was fine. Drove it another couple miles home, and the same thing occured. I towed it in to the dealer I bought it from (only 2 weeks ago) because it is under warranty for 30 days, and they replaced the oil pressure sending unit, changed the oil, and everything seemed fine. So since my warranty is running out fast, I thought I would try accelerating fast and see if it would happen again. Guess what, same thing. I have drove it another hundred miles with no problem, only seems to do it after heavy acceleration. Does anybody have any ideas?

Ok. Its been a few months since my previous post and i have some updates. After my mechanic flushed my oil system a few times with some gunk removal stuff... he cleaned as much as he could by dropping the oil pan... cleaned the oil pump screen... and replaced my oil pump. Put in a good synthetic blend of oil and new oil filter and it ran fine. I drove it for 500 miles and then took a trip to The Auto Zone to buy another bottle of oil gunk flushing stuff, engine restore in case i had any damage, and mobile 1 synthetic 10w-30 oil and mobile 1 filter. It hasnt given me any problems yet.

But, now i have ANOTHER problem with it that i have yet to determine. Recently my starter hasnt been working. I turn the key and sometimes all that will happen is a click. Then ill try again and it will click again. Click. Click. Click. Then maybe if i get lucky one of the clicks will turn the engine on. Then sometimes it will work first try. my dodge is so unreliable... i hate it... f*ck dodge and their s*it engines.

I recently posted a problem with my 1998 Dodge with 360 V8 Magnum engine with the oil pressure dropping to "O" according to the gage in the dash. I replaced the sending unit and this did not fix the problem. I replaced the oil pump and the pickup and the oil filter and put fresh oil in it. I cleaned the oil pan out while I had it down. I put everything back and it seemed to be OK but the problem has come back after it reached operating tempature. Usually when it is at an idle and the pressure drops it will stay down until you tap the gas, but last night it dropped and I left it idling and went back and the pressure was fine. I seems like I hear a rattle when the truck starts after it has set all night or for a long period of time, but it only does it for a second.I do not know what to do next besides drive it. I have to say that the old pickup did have a lot of pieces of something in the screen.

sounds like the same poblem i had, what kind of pieces did you find? did they look like bearings shavings? did you inspect around the caps for other metal shavings?
most of the time you can see if a main or rod bearing not holding oil pressure without pulling the caps.
