Subject: Whats wrong with my truck?
IP: Logged

Message:
I was sitting at a red light and the truck dropped in rpms then went back, and again...
Then when I started going from the redlight it seemed to be ok, then it started doing it while I was driving, kind of like it lost all throttle response and it kept getting worse until I got home, I didn't think I was going to make it...

The Check Engine Light came on before I got home and I don't know what could be wrong, I just got this truck a few days ago...

IAC solinoid? Adjusts the air coming depending on if the mix is fat or lean. I had a similar problom in my truck. Turned out to be a combination of the IAC solinoid and a cracked computer; I could press on the plug on the computer and the truck would shut down.

I didn't buy your truck for several reasons...

First off, St. Louis is quite a far ways from here, and it would be pretty difficult for me to get up there as I am only 17 years old. Also, this truck had no A/C leak and less than 60,000 miles, I don't like dark green and I got a 4 year unlimited mile warranty with this one.

I haven't had any problems with my truck :-) The leak is getting fixed, which was minor, by the way. I would not pay an outrageous amount for a vehicle because of the color or because it is sporty. I buy based on what I can afford, and the shape the vehicle is in, not what is spent on the outside. If I wanted black, but I found a red truck for $5,000 or so less, and maybe some extra miles, I would buy the red. In regard to distance, I posted that I would have paid the transport cost to have the vehicle shipped to whoever bought it. I work for the automobile transportation business, so it would cost me only pocket change to ship it. I wish you luck on your truck, and I hope you enjoy, and I hope you do not have any more problems. I would have it checked out before its too late to return it. I apologize for being arrogant on my first post.

Sorry if I sounded wrong and stuff...

Don't get me wrong or nothing, I did not buy this truck because of what color it is (I would have prefered the Dodge Blue), or anything like that, I bought it because it was the year I wanted ('97-'01), because it was in GREAT shape (low miles, never smoked in, perfect interior/exterior), and the warranty I got just topped everything off.

The milage on my truck is what is causing me to sell it cheap, and it's giving me a hard time selling it. I know that a vehicle will last you a long time, depending if you take care of it. I know this vehicle has at least another 100,000 left in it, because it has been good to us (My boyfriend and I) so far. Be careful on your future purchases. I love Dodge products, but I know someone who bought a Stratus, (I think, might be a Cirrus, same thing) but anyhoo, that car she bought has been in the shop more times that she have driven it. I am not lying, she has a stack of repair bills about 7 inches tall! Every manufacturer, whether it be Dodge or Honda, (excuse my French :-) make lemons. It's hard to distinguish which is which, but if you happen to buy new or used, it never hurts to dish out some money for a mechanic to look at a vehicle you wish to purchase. Believe me, I know from experience. When I was 17, I bought a 92 Eagle Talon, which looked sharp. I didn't know anything about cars, but I bought it because I wanted something cool to take to school. I know regret it because the car was a POS! I paid $4,000 for it, which was not bad considering it was only 6 yrs old when I got it. I know why now. It started smoking, and it have been through 8 different owners! It needed new heads! I sold it for only $1400 because it was not worth that. That was my lesson, and just passing on some advice. Can I ask what you paid for your truck? It sounds like you got some great deals with it depending on the price. Thanks for listening to my mouth (fingers) run.

Upper $9,000 plus a few fees that go along with buying from a dealer (new or used) and I bought a warranty.

Book on it in my area was around $10,500 - $11,000

boy, that is a good deal. My boyfriend bought the 1997 dak in the year 2000. It was 3 years old, and he paid 10k cash, with no warranty. That is an excellent deal.

I took it to the used dealer I bought it from and he hooked up the analyzer to the computer and it said multiple cylinder misfires in cylinders 1, 5, and 8. They checked the spark plugs and wires, everything was fine and gapped correctly. They then checked the distributor cap and rotor thing, the cap was burnt up so they replaced it and took my JET chip out saying that was the problem, since it was making the fuel burn hotter and such, but I think it is starting to do it again...

I have a '97 Dakota SLT CC 5.2L Auto with 56xxx miles.

What else could the problem be?

Also, where can I get a high performance distributor cap and rotor, and how much will they run?

If you are getting 12mpg, then something is wrong. (unless you are driving uphill against a strong headwind all the time).

Well, the guys getting 18 and 21 mph on there 5.2L are driving 2 wheel driver trucks with standard tires from factory. I do have the 98 5.2L 4x4 with 31x10.5 (Factory)tires and only get 13 mpg. I am working on my trucks fuel economy with a person who assists on making these performance programs which are being downloaded to the computers. Hypertech I believe is coming out with a download for Dodge. It will only give a 2-5 mpg. Im told. Add a cold air intake and look at an exhaust system (3 inch). I was told stay away from headers unless you want to be repairing non stop.
