The think I like most about this truck is the engine. I think it is the ideal engine choice for 95% of the people that will buy a Dakota. If you ignore the low rough idle it is a realy smooth engine. The transmission is as good as any automatic in any american truck I have ever driven. An awful lot of people bad mouth this engine and trany. I have to wonder what they were thinking when they test drove it? This can also be aid for people that have the V6. We all have choices and I happen to like my choice of the 4.7. I happen to live in a pushrod free comunity!!! I just thought I would say something positive about of great little engine!!! Please do not take this as a flame to anyone it is just a postive supportive post to all those who like the 4.7!!!!!!!!

LOL, no, "little" is my 1.8L corolla engine...little is when your engine has less displacement than some soda bottles.

GRrrrr can't wait to get my damn truck, if ANYONE knows of a black CC 4.7 4X2 in texas, ANYWHERE in texas, please please let me know, cuz I sure as hell can't find one :\

It is Normal...I have 10,000 miles on the 02 and 37,500 on the 2k and no probs, Very Happy I am. I LOVE THE TRUCKS PERIOD....

I agree that it is not realy small. It is small though by domestic V8 standards. There have not been alot of V8 with a displacement uder 5.0L in the last 12 years. Alot of people are used to 5.0,5.3,5.7,6.0,6.2,6.5,7.4,8.1 liter V8's in their trucks. Before I bought my wife the Dak QC our vechiles were a 3 cylinder 1.0L Geo Metro and an old Toyota 4Runner with a 4 cylinder 2.4L. While I do not like small displacment engines unless they are turbo charged I like push rod with hydralic lifters even less!!!! I am still waiting for a pushrod free big block!!!!!!!!

I second the motion. I think the "rough" idle has to do with all the lightweight components they are using in the engines these days.

My idle is even but it seems you can feel the moving parts in the engine. Carbon fiber/composite manifolds, light weight pistons/rods, aluminum heads. When you build things lighter with higher performance, you just don't have the mass there to dampen the resulting vibrations as much.

I like the ease of changing the plugs on the 4.7L. They're right on top.

As for small displacement... I drove a '65 Chevy pickup with 3-speed and 287 c.i. (close to 4.7L) and it could do 2nd gear "broadies" and produced extreme tire smoke just fine... Don't tell my wife, but so does our Quad Cab!

My girlfriend has a 84 Nissan Pulsar NX, that has 1.6L engine. This engine rules though! It idles at 3000 RPM in the dead cold of winter. Pings. Knocks. Rattles. THIS ENGINE IS INDESTRUCTIBLE! I call it the superman engine. You can do anything you want to this poor lil motor.

You've never heard: "oh, hello officer, I was just spinnin' a few broadies in the parking lot, eh?"

===========
FOR THE RECORD: My 2000 4.7L has NEVER idled rough. It is so smooth that a glass of water sittin on the engine would not ripple. I DO have the 5sp manual if that matters.
=============
The displacement of the 4.7L was computer calulated to be an ideal bore-stroke that ensures complete combustion. (read low-emmissions)

It is NO COIENDINCE that the Toyota V8 is also 4.7L... their computer came up with the same answer when designing their engine too.

Dosent FORD have a 4.8L V8 ?? (which also fits this same trend within 100CCs)

Ford has the 4.6L SOHC, which they have had for a long time. GM has a 4.8L although that is still a pushrod motor. GM seems to be the last holdout, although they are making them work just fine. (Emissions, torque, horsepower)

In the 1/8th I've dogged all 4 and 2 ea 7 series BMer's. Feels pretty good in a truck. ;]

I agree that the 4.7 is a fine engine. I must say though, that mine doesn't seem to idle rough at all. Of course anything idles smooth compared to the 427 across the street. And about all this spinning of tires - you folks doing that must not have LS diff's, because I've never gotten my 255/70s to do anything more than bark snagging 2nd gear, and then I almost didn't hear it because I left so fast. Mods? Show me torque and I'll show you mods.

Hey guys I am not a push rod hater!!! I come off like it some times. I just like modern designs. I hate to see extra things that can break/fail being put into a powertrain. If more companys used solid lifters I would feel better about lifters. If I had a nickel for every set of lifters/push rods I have had to replace on customers cars I could send my family to the Bahama's(sp). I also hate that ticking noise that some oem lifters make. There is no advantage to push rod designs other then cost and packageing!!! I have owned quite a few push rod engines. Half had solid lifters and the other half had hydralic lifters. The most durable engine I have ever had the pleasure to own and work on is the Toyota 22RE 4 cylinder. Fully dressed with aluminum heads and aluminum acc. brackets it weights just 100lbs. less then a chevy small block with cast iron heads and acc. brackets. I have run it up to 9500RPM for raceing for years in Turbo Celica and Pickup Trucks. The second most durable engine in the world of gasoline engines would have to be the Dodge Slant Six!!!! If ou keep them full of oil and change the spark plugs they just keep on going!!!!

Cotharyus, it all depends on your driving style and shifting speed. my bone stock 4.7 (R.I.P.) could chirp 2nd, 3rd, and 4th!! 4th gear chirps stopped when i got my lakewood bars. it just depends on how long you want the tranny to last. i broke the input shaft on my nv3500 after 8000 miles and had to spend a few days arguing with the dealer for them to replace it.

Don't you think it lacks a little low end grunt, for a truck engin. It is high reving, runs well, but I would expect a little broader torque range, especially off idle.

Just picked up a new 01 Dakota SLT Club Cab 4X4 with Auto with 3:55 gears and the 4.7L Infinity factory CD and all for under 20K (what a find huh :)

Just wanted to say I love the Engines torque, read somewhere it produces 200Ft Lbs. @ 1500rpm, that is perfect for low rpm (overdrive) cruising and Towing. I pull a 18ft Camper with it and it pulls it easily. Went to put a Trans cooler on it and discovered it has 2 fans, the regular belt driven one and an Electric fan on the lower radiator to aid in cooling the Trans, EXCELLENT idea. I have added a Frame rail cooler just to extend the life a bit but dont know if it really needed it or not, seems Dodge done there homework on this truck.

Been a life long time Chevy Truck fan have a S-10 with 4.3L V6 with usaual intake and exhaust mods which pulled pretty good (210hp +/-) but I just had to have a V8. I waited forever for a V8 S-10 or a Mid sized Chevy truck but that never happened.

Very satisfied with this Trucks Power, Room and attention to detail.

[b]I have entered Truckville and may never return. [b]

I test drove the 2 side by side in comparison (the 4.7 and the 5.9) and the 5.9 seemed to pull at WOT w/ ease...the 4.7 seemed like it had to struggle and didn't feel as stout. Don't get me wrong I think its bad@ss that they put a V8 in a compact truck but I also liked the lower look of the R/T and the handling it had was awesome. If I ever got to where I can't afford to keep this gas guzzler anymore I'd probably get me a 4.7 cuz they just look good compared to Ford and Chevy.

I love my 4.8L 2000 Dakota Club Cab BUT hate the highway mileage. I have to drive approx 40 miles on I-95 in Florida every weekday to get to work and another 40 to get home. If I don't do 80 then I'll get run over......and thats in the right lane! I can see my MPG dropping to down to around 12-13 even with the cruise control set staying at a constant speed. That is my ONLY dislike about this Dakota.

Really wanted a Quad cab but the dealer told me it would be another 4 months before they'd see the first one..........approx. 1 month later they had a dozen sitting on their lot, I almost cried.

Anyway, If I could afford it, I'd be driving a 5.9L 4x4 Quad Cab.....I can dream can't I?

Izzy,

Something is really wrong with your DAK! It has grown a 100 cc's, and really gets terrible fuel milage. I drive in excess of 100 MPH not KPH every day and get 16-17 mpg. When my wife drives it (little old lady she is) at 75-80 mph she gets 19-21 mpg. More closer to 19 mpg. So I would start looking into ways to beat up the dealer and find out whats wrong with it.
Better Luck next trip,

First of all, i have to agree with everyone here that the 4.7 V8 is a great angine, in my opinion it is far better that the 5.9, dont get me wrong, i loved my r/t, but id always wanted a 4-door pickup, so when the quad cab came i traded in the r/t for my quad, then the engine choice, 4.7? 5.9?
i chose the 4.7 because it gets better mileage, and it was only 10 HP below the 5.9. After i installed my shaker hood from Profinish, ive beaten 3 out of the 4 r/t ive faced at the track.

I'm choosing the 4.7 in my new QC
IP: Logged

Message:
Now that it has been out a few years and we've seen in last pretty well in the Grand Cherokee, I have no qualms about ordering the 4.7 in my new QC next month.

Actually, if you look at the other "mid-sized" V-8s being offered by the competition, the 4.7 ranks pretty good.

Ford's 4.6 may be good in a Mustang, but it is pitifully slow in the F-150. My neighbor gets nowhere near the mileage of the Dodge 4.7 Dak in his F-150 supercab. The 4.6 Ford gets horrible mileage too - think 11-12 mpg in a F-150 SuperCab as normal.

Chevy's little 4.8 has lots of HP, but not much torque. Besides, theres that awful "piston slap" issue with both the 5.3 and 4.8 Chevy V-8s right now and GM does not seem interested in fixing it, either. Most people I know with a 5.3 or 4.8 Silverado have the psiton slap thingy going on. How'd you like a V-8 that burns a quart of oil between changes at 15-20K miles? Not me!

Yep, I agree, the 4.7 Dodge is a great V-8 and quite a departure from their other V-8 endeavours. I cannot wait to own one!
