To All,
My truck juststarted to make a ticking noise @ around 4000rpm. It sounds like a valve or push rod, im not to sure? I always change oil at 3000ml, could it be the weight? Or is something bent? Its a 98CC RT with only a intake and 180stat. Know mager mods to cause mechanical problems wright!

Help?

moxley: This is a pretty well known issue. My 2000 4.7L does it. Most explanations for it are that its a noise the emissions system makes. Not a big issue supposedly but if you're like the rest of us it's darn annoying.

When you say it makes a ticking noise starting at 4000 RPM. Is it just that it is audible at that RPM? Does it happen when your are parked and rev the motor or when you are driving?

If it happens while you are parked and rev the motor, try to issolate the sound a little more. You can do this by using a "mechanics stethascope," long screwdriver, or any other long metal rod. Place one end of the metal rod to your ear and the other on the block, valve cover, alternator, ect. (BE CAREFULL NOT TO GET IT CAUGHT IN THE MOVING PARTS OF THE MOTOR, that could put you in the hospital!!!)

If you can better isolate the sound it will be easier to fix the problem. I know that on '72GMC a valve seat was loose and it sounded like it was main bearing, or pushroad. If it is something inside the motor, listing to the vibrations coming off the block should tell you right away.

Let me know what you find.

Any valve tran noise would sound like a rattle at 4000 rpm , the click would be 33 times per second , 66 times per second if it was at crank speed. If it is a slow click (a few times per second ) I would look at the fan belt for the problem.

Thanks for the response guys!
Tonight im going to try all of your ideas to see where exactly the problem pertains from? It starts @ 4000 and gets louder and faster as the RPMs go up. I dont think its valve tran the ticking is to far apart, but it still sounds like metal to metal?
I let yall know if figure anything out!

I'm not sure, but I used to have a '77 Chevelle that had AC. One day it picked up a click under accelleration and highway cruising, I wasn't too worried about it because the car was in pretty crappy shape (rusted -bad-, but free). Turned out it was the electronic clutch on the AC compressor, eventually I turned on the AC and blew -every fuse- on the car. :0/

Like someone said, valvetrain is going to sound like a machine gun going off under the hood speed-wise. I've heard that the fuel injectors click like crazy (mine don't, but I've heard...).

I'd try the stethoscope idea, or use a long-handled screwdriver and put your ear to the handle. Find out where the noise is coming from. If you really think it's the valve train, it's more than likely either a lifter or in the rockers. Rockers are easy to check, all you have to do is pull the valve covers and see if they are loose. I recommend getting a Clymer or Haynes repair manual first though.

(Heh, if it -does- turn out to be a rocker needing replacing, well, it's a good time to go to 1.7 RRs!)
