Subject: 93 Dakota 5.2L v8 stalling

Message:
First my problem was that any time the rpm dropped bellow 800, it would stall. This would be slowing down for a yield sign, stopping, even starting the truck I would have to rev her up. I changed the following, which has improved, but I am still stalling on startup, switching between park and drive or reverse. (no more stalling at stop signs). Only engine code I get is 22, and I have a post before this one regarding that issue.

Replace EGR Valve
Replace Coolant temp sensor (single wire one for gauge)
Replace PCV Valve
Replace Air Filter
Changed oil and filter
Topped up trans fluid
Inspected TPS (looks new)
Replace IAC
Replace Tires
Replace Shocks
Replace rear brake shoes, drums, seals, springs
Replace front seats (oddly this didn't make it run better)
Replace Fuel Filter
Cleaned Charge air sensor
Checked vac system for leaks, replaced 1 hose
Replaced tb to filter gasket

The truck does not seem to have the power it should, I expected to be peeling rubber on take off, but the low end seems way under powered. I think it's running rich.

The warmer the truck gets, the worse the stalling gets. Last night after a 20 minute highway run, the truck stalled out 5 times just trying to drive it into the wash bay, even reving it up wasn't helping much.

Battery is good, Ican crank for hours but I cleaned up the terminals anyway. If I put a heavy electrical load on the truck, it doesn't make a difference. Fog lights, headlights, brights, inverter running laptop, and massive amp/sub hardly even dims the headlights.

Any ideas on what to do next? This truck is hurting the wallet.

It just got worse, tried to do some running around and I can't put it into reverse or drive without it stalling over and over. I don't even get a block down the road by the time I get it going and it just stalls out again.

Tried sea foam and gas down the tb, ran okay for a few more blocks, then back to the stalling. If I can get a good speed going (20+) she's a smooth ride. I also noticed that even when the rpms drop, it's a lot smoother than it use to be. I think I am on the right track, but I can't even back into a parking space.

Getting closer and closer to driving this thing into a river, but I have put a lot of money into it already.

Anyone have any suggestions on finding the problem?

That's the one receipt I can not find, likely cause it was just a thermostat. It was a fail safe thermostat, most expensive one they had, but for the temp I am not sure at all.

It is the same as the one that I had taken out of the truck when I bought it, I changed it cause the truck does not get very good heat in the cab.

Put a fuel pressure gauge on your fuel rail and monitor the fuel
pressure, there should be NO fluctuations in pressure.

Check primary and secondary resistance of the ignition coil.

Check voltage at the TPS .7volts.

Remove the distributor cap carefully and crank engine to watch
the rotation of the ignition rotor...its gotta turn without any skips
or pauses.

if all is ok....

Then its the "GREAT SPLICE" at the fuse box!

Well. some dirty bugger cracked open the tool box mounted in the truck, so no voltage tester or soldering iron tonight.

I took the tb off this evening and detailed it. It wasn't really dirty but I figured it was worth a try since I had the time. Unfortunately this did not make any difference.

I read about that great 3 wire splice on a few other posts, I am going to have a look to see if I can find that tonight when I pull into the wash bay. I might not be able to fix it tonight, but it would settle my mind if I found a problem there.

But I am off to the rigs in 7 hrs for a few days, truck will have to sit till then.

As for the coil and cap, I plan on replacing them when I do a tune up on payday (monday). Coil, Cap, Rotor, Wires, Plugs... and if I don't buy a camper then I may do the injectors too.

The tips and tricks article is great, thanks. I will be checking the tps when I get back and making that mod if necessary.

I have a question though, it suggests relocating the IAT sensor to the intake tube, but it does not say what the benefit to this is. Would you happen to know what I would gain by doing this?

IKnow, you looked at my coil? Were you the dirty bugger in my tool box? haha. I plan on changing the coil on payday with the rest of the tuneup.

Just found a set of 4 port bosch injectors... 8 for $100

Fail safe T-stat are junk, Sorry to break the bad
news. I've replaced over a dozen to date. They lock
open for no reason. Start by replacing your T-stat
with a plain simple Stant. 10 - 1 when you remove
the fail safe it's locked open.

Maybe that's why the truck never heats up. I never heard of a problem with them before. I will pick one up on payday too... cheap enough to try.

Well, here's some stuff to add to the new parts list...

Plugs
Wires
Cap
Rotor
Ign Coil
Rad cap
...all changed with new parts

Also did the TPS mod, but still stalling out.

The truck runs slightly better on the highway... I do suspect all the parts I have replaced to be original from stock. All were in good condition however.

While the plugs were out I did a compression test and there's no problems there.

I have yet to check for the 3 wire splice, I have a new job I train in the morning for, so I gotta get some sleep.

I removed that plastic cover on the grill to allow better airflow to the tb. Made a big difference on the highway but I am still stalling at op temp around idle. I pled out a cross a busy intersection yesterday and stalled blocking e lanes of traffic. I am out of ideas and almost out of money again. Is there an easy way to test the fuel pump? And is there a way too see if maybe the cat is plugged without hacking the exaust?

For cripes sake. Change the MAP sensor. Next, plan on a
new belly pan gasket replacement. Reset the computer after
the sensor replacement.

How many miles on your truck? If it's over 100,000 miles check the fuel filter that runs along the frame on the driver side of the truck and replace it. It could be a possibly be a fuel pump issue also. Check fuel pump pressure at the schader valve with a fuel pressure tester. When cranking it should read between 45 and 50 psi.

Gen1, thanks, I will look into the MAP sensor soon. I planned on changing the belly pan gasket as it is oily around that area (though, not leaking at this time).

Wad, I changed the fuel gauge already, it is in the replaced parts list.

Bah, a year later and I am still tryig to get this damn truck running proper. $500 later in the shop and they wont look at the truck anymore. I had them remove the rad fan, and replace it with an electric one, gave the truck a little more power but the idle is still up and down. It doesn't stall out in the summer, but gets close. Completly un drivable in the winter, which is coming soon.

The truck is in the middle of a safety and they wont pass it until I can get rid of the check engine light, and code 22. They say they tested the sensor and there's nothing wrong with it or the wire, but the code comes right back after being cleared.

OK My list shows the temp sensor for code22.
(as I thought)

How are the threads? (on both the sensor & intake)

Clean them maybe it's not grounding.

What size T-Stat do you have in the truck?
