From looking at it it looks like the left bank is forward of the right bank, so #1 should be left front. Yes?

where is #1? behind 1 on left bank or on the right bank?

I'm more accustomed to thrashing on I4 and I6 lumps.

last V8 I had much to do with was a Lycoming in a 1937 Cord<G>

Which bank is forward makes no difference on cylinder numbering. Odd is driver's side, even is passenger side.

#1 is driver's side front cylinder, with 3 behind, then 5, and 7 all the way back.

#2 is passenger side front cylinder, followed by 4, 6 and 8.

firing order:
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

Lead cylinder is always no.1. To Jason- some older engines from other makes are numbered 1234 on one side. 5678 on the other. Probably before your time. but its out there.

and the Lycoming V8 used in the non-supercharged Cord fired along one bank then back the other bank (firing 1-2-3-4-8-7-6-5 IIRC)

very odd. they found they had to change it for the supercharged engine to a scheme similar to today.

Ford's small block numbers holes differently.
