A lot of the confusion comes from the fact that Mopar Performance offers the a cam it calls Magnum RT, but it has nothing to do with the Dakota Magnum RT package that came many years after the Magnum RT cam. The Magnum 5.9 came with the same basic cam throughout production regardless of the vehicle it came in.

Ok- so the next part of my question- would I gain anything by putting a 5.9 magnum cam in a 5.2 or are they the same? I have the 5.9 cam, a new oe replacemnt a friend gave me. I'm putting a 5.2 magnum engine in a 66 valiant wagon, using a crosswind intake, edelbrock 4 bbl and spitfire headers. Just trying to ad alittle umph without spending a ton. Thanks

The factory 5.2 Magnum cam is hotter (.432" lift) than the factory 5.9 cam (.410" lift). Both have mild duration specs, so the 5.2 would not benefit from the 5.9's cam. It would actually lose power.
The Mopar Performance Magnum RT cam is hotter than both.

OK, pay attention. 5.9 cam would refer to the one that came in the 5.9 from the factory. 5.2 cam would refer to the cam that came from the factory in the 5.2. Mopar Performance would refer to an aftermarket cam..... not a factory original cam. Since you already know the cams will swap between engines..... Leave the stock 5.2 cam in the 5.2, it's a better cam than the 5.9. The aftermarket Mopar Performance cam is hotter than either stock cam, but it will cost more money. Sorry man, I don't know how to make it any clearer.

Now- does anyone know of a cheaper alternative to the MP magnum r/t cam, with about the same specs?

I think the mopar magnum r/t cam is your best option. you could try looking in a summit mag, or perhaps calling them.

I got a question here.... would it be worth it to drop a mopar magnum r/t cam in my 5.2L? If so what other mods would i have to do with it?

jayb: Absolutely. Back when that cam was introduced, they didn't even have an MPI M1 available, so they were run with the stock intake manifolds. Naturally, an M1 would be a better match. Don't forget the matching valve springs. The MP computer will help a little, but not necessary, especially if you wanna stay on regular gas. Naturally, opening the exhaust makes it all that much better, so basically, you can add stuff as you are able, and each time it'll get that much better. So, for starters, the only other necessary change is using the matching valve springs.

mopartim: Unfortunately, roller cams cost considerably more than flat tappet cams. You're looking at nearly $300 for the cam, plus springs. I have seen CompCams roller cam/springs for $289 on eBay, but that's not a regular deal. Thanks for not taking it the wrong way in my last post.
You could add 1.7:1 rockers, but that, coupled with the lift of the 5.2 cam would exceed the stock springs' capability...they're only good in the long term for a max lift of around .435" and the cost of the rockers is nearly that of the cam. Also, while the added lift would improve power, you'd still be on the factory cam (and it's pretty lazy with the other specs (overlap, duration, etc). A much better foundation would be found in a new non-OEM factory cam. While you're at it, get some aftermarket pushrods. The higher the lift, the more the stockers will tend to deflect as forces increase.

Listen to gen1dak.
Now, the 300 hp 360 has the same cam specs as the 5.2 Magnum with LESS lift! The 5.2 Magnum cam is the ticket! I have DesktopDyno at home as well as Mopar books with all the cam specs in it. The 5.9 with the 5.2 cam has HUGE torque increase over stock. It was over 400lbs/ft @ 200rpm! The 5.9 is a smog cam, NGFN - No Good For Nothing.
I think KRCPerformance has decent cams but a 5.2 cam is the cheapest way to go.

Early 5.9's had the older/smaller valve sizes too!
5.9 with 5.2 heads and 5.2 cam seems backwards but is the better way to go.

B~
