Subject: 1999 5.2 clutch replacement

The dealer told me that some Dodge trucks have a lip around the flywheel that prevents it from being resurfaced. They don't know for sure if a 1999 with the NV3500 and 5.2 liter engine would or not.

I'm wondering what people here have to say? If it has the lip around the flywheel; would that would prevent it from being resurfaced? For some reason I'm thinking that I recall someone saying a while back that the lip was ground off so that the unit could be resurfaced without spending the 350 dollars for a new Mopar flywheel!

Oh yeah, the truck has 129,000 miles on it, the clutch doesn't seem to be slipping but I get the bucking Bronco thing going when I let the clutch out in 1st gear and reverse.

lip or no lip a competent machine shop should be able to resurface it.

Thanks for the reply. I dropped it off Monday, I visited the truck today and saw the flywheel and clutch. I'm hoping it will be done tomorrow but it will be Monday the latest I sure hope!

The flywheel does not have the lip on it fortunately, so that just saves a lot of confusion.

Scary though, the freaking clutch was about a millimeter away from being down to rivet in two places. If it'd scored the flywheel, I'd probably have to have bought a new flywheel. Which at the dealer is like 300 dollars.

This is with the NV3500 mated to a 5.2 and the truck has 129,000 miles on it right now.

The clutch had not been slipping. I was just getting the shudder feeling when starting off in 1st gear and reverse.

IMHO, the shudder you're referring to is a sign of a fried clutch. Did you ever do the test where you park against a tree, set the parking brake, and try to slip the clutch in 5th gear? I remember reading that if your engine doesnt die, the clutch is shot. But I think that the clutch would be fried once you try that test anyways. ha!

Anyways, 130,000 out of a clutch isnt bad. Are you replacing it with OEM stuff, or something a little more direct feeling. I remember not liking the clutch "feeling" on my old NV3500 - it felt sloppy. but I never got around to replacing it before I sold the truck.

Nope, I didn't try the trick of driving against a tree. lol I never heard of that. I did drive up my street alot where there is a very steep hill. I never got any slippage there or anywhere.

One shop I'd talked to wanted to put in a high performance clutch. I ended up going with the the factory Dodge unit though.

Something strange that I did notice is that there is uneven wear on it. I don't understand how that is possible?
