Recently, I completed most of the mod's I had planned for this 97 v6 Dakota. I then realized I needed to readjust the fuel sync according to Larry's instructions(from appr. -6 to appr. +3). I not ge a check engine light after doing this, I have scanned the OBD 2 port and the trouble shows up as Ignition Coil Malfunction, primary or secondary. I had temporarily replaced the coil, replaced the spark plug wires with a backup set I keep, distributor cap and rotor, I even added an additional ground to coil and cleaned all the grounds between engine block and ground. None of the things I have tried will clear the check engine light. I can clear the trouble light with my Autoxray scanner, it will come back on. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions.

I think there's your answer. Diagnostics probably found out-of-range resistance or voltage in coil circuit due to this 'additional ground'. remove it, clear codes and check again.

Bob,
I think he's saying he added it to try and clear the light...I don't think it was there when the light first came on.

Bob, I have the check engine light with or without the ground. I added the ground after getting the check engine light.

I backed off the fuel sync adjustment, a small amount and resolved the check engine light, I must have had it advanced too much. The truck ran very well at this setting. I was baffled to see a check engine light that indicated ignition coil malfunction.
