I have an 87 dakota and had no heat at all until today when I tried the heater core back flush mentioned on here. I now have good heat while standing still but only luke warm when driving. My problem is much the same as dave 2000 3.9 above. My temp gage never gets up to normal, any help would be appreciated.

I have a little different problem, Hope some of you can help

I have a 01 Dakota sport, the heat works fine on the drivers side floor, dash, and the defrost, and it switches between them. The problem is on the passenger side, It blows Ice cold air at the same time the drivers side is HOT, It switches between floor, dash and defrost but the passenger side, dash and floor is always cold, air seems to come out the same on both sides just one side is hot the other is Ice cold.
thanks

I've read completely through all the threads and have the same problem as the original post... not opposed to the back flush as it seems pretty in-expensive other than antifreeze replacement and time... however I do get some heat from the floor and cold air on the defrosters, when on mix settings it appears to get slightly warmer on the floor. That is what perplexes me why does the defroster blow cold and some heat from the floor. It's a 97 Club Cab Sport 4x4 that I myself replaced the water pump in 04 and have been suffering here in Maine ever since... also swapped out a failing stock radio at the same time so was wondering if it might be some sort of electronic "damponing air control valve" or something... temp guage = 195ish will give the backflush "a go" in a few days...

Oh and it was not a stock for stock radio replacement... a kenwood replacment, figured out the wiring or so I think/thought

Well hard to imagine that Dan's technique still works even in 2009 8^) and to think that I suffered all these past 5 years w/out heat! Thanks Dan and other contributers to this thread... IT WORKS! Even flushed both ways several times to see if it might dis-lodge somemore crud... had the hose components kicking around the house and I'm using a coffee filter to reclaim the antifreeze 8^) Hey at least it wasn't a used coffee filter 8^)... actually I noticed that it went from Sh%t brown to fairly clear after the first half gallon or so of flushing... Just need to adjust the ratio of water/antifreeze now for 40below... have seen it on two occasions here in central Me.

DAN you are AWESOME! Thank you so much for posting the fix to the heater problem! My husband and I were just getting ready to go to the dealership to pick up the heater core ($545) when I tried one last attempt to fix the problem. Your backflush solution took us literally 10 minutes from start to finish and the heat we get is amazing! Thanks again!
