My V6 dakota has a knocking sound when I accelerate just before it shifts. It seems to be the worst after it is up to temp.

get a 180 degree t-stat
also try 1 range colder spark plugs, the knocking is from early detonation.

does the knocking rythme increase with the rpms, or is it constant? If it is constant and more like a clatter than knocking it is probably you timming chain hitting the cover. see timing chain posts for more info.

year? millage? is the oil level within the limits? also, is the pressure ok? low oil causes my truck to ping alot, that or cheap oil or cheap gas.

Wondering why you unplugged #5 or did you unplug them one at a time and it stopped knocking on #5. Your problem may well that injector is defective.

First thing is to try ALL the injectors to see for sure that # 5 really is the only one effected. If it is I'd be trying an injector swap.
