search for some of Larrys older posts (J&J auto)
most knowedgable guy on here with the mods for the 3.9's

if memory serves me right
he said the headers should be the last or one of the last things you do
you want to improve the intake side 1st
bigger TB, RR's or cam
or you wont see any improvment at all

That's why I'm saying...I need to know if they're worth it for my set up....guess not if they need a little more help on the intake side. Eh I'd see more of a gain from some RR's and a cam. Headers will be the last thing I do probably...also could never happen and I'll cross over to the V8 side.

well, what if we have mods already..........intake, tb, exhaust...........would headers make a larger difference? the jba ones replace the stoke man. so it shouldn't be a problem hookin them up to my system right?

IMO, there not worth it. the round header tubes dont match the square exhaust ports very well and they eat up exhaust gaskets about once a year. I've done a lot of mods on my truck and they make no noticable difference in perfomance or sound.

Let me rephrase that... where the header tubes go from round to rectangleish shape does not match to port very well and the header tubes are not equal length. But they look cool.

I bought my jba's in the fall of 2002.I've not had to change gaskets or do anything to them since I installed them.Though,if to do it over again,I would buy the ceramic coated ones.My nickel -plated headers are beginning to show surface rust.Of course I am in south Louisiana near the gulf,so my environment is a bit corrosive.My Y2K Dak is a 5 speed & I noticed a bit more bottom in 4th gear and ,combined with 1.7 rollers, a much stronger pull in the higher RPMs.I suspect just about every mod which adds power, adds the power in the higher rpms.Except for the v8 throttle body it seems.I got a bit of off idle from that one.Airaid spacers are a waste of money unless the innards of the manifold have been altered the right way.

JBAs will respond radically to a modified intake that has the runners cut a couple inches and is epoxied to choke out plenum area and dead spots.Add to that a set of 24#/hr injectors and you'll run head to head with a stock R/T.

I love to see those guys punch the steering wheel when they can't pull away!!

Aside from what I've experienced,I never changed cams, though; I'm sure this formula combined with a cam that has a bit more duration,would be a surprising challenge to alot of competitors.
so far I've installed:
3" cold air intake
1999 360 R/T throttle body
Airaid intake spacer(prettiest waste of money so far)
Crower 1.7 roller rockers
JBA headers
MBRP catback exhaust (WAY too loud inside!! go with Flowmaster 50 or something similar)
gasket-matched modified intake manifold(60 or so millileters of area epoxied and 2" of runners removed)throttle bores at 54 MM
Mustang injectors (24 lbs. per hour)
MSD 6A ignition amplifier with NAPA brass cap & rotor.MSD 8.5 Superconductor wires
I use a Superchips programmer to switch between regular and super unleaded gasoline when the price dictates.I've found with this setup I get the best combination of speed and economy with the middle "performanec tow" program and using 89 octane
I can get almost any automatic off the line.
I can spin the tires in 2nd gear as long as I hold the pedal down.Nice chirps in 3rd too.

I put my headers on my motor in 1999 and never
replaced them and they do not leak

At the time this was done the port clean and
polish was done I never removed them even when
I stroked the motor left them on the heads

There is a trick to this

install them tighten now for the next few weeks
keep checking them let it cool a little and
retorque retorque a dozen times than do it cold
I have never had any trouble with blown flange
gaskets on any headers

Now the collectors on the old style headers they
would blow after 3 to 4 years never by the head

once the intake side is improved even just a
bigger throttle body than the headers will add
about 10hp at the wheels you need to get more in
before you let more out

with a bigger tb 1.7's or a bigger tb and a cam
they will show 15hp at the wheels

gas mileage will be 1 to 2 mpg better but there
is one big problem here on a highway cruse you
will see the increase the prob the perf increase
makes it hard not to hit the throttle a little
harder all the time to feel the power increase

with the bigger tb 1.7's or a cam the headers
and a low restriction exhaust have showen up to
a 20 hp increase on a V6 that is a very nice gain

both my stroked and ported motors showed 25hp
but that is a little differant ball game than
a stock internal V6

The headers also seporate the sound better

Are they worth it YES as long as you have done
the intake side

You will get gains mid to top but lose some low
end on a pure stock setup 10hp from 2500 on up

yea i purchased a set of the jba ceramin short headers and honestly it was one of the best performance mods i bought it sounds completly different everyone tells me it sounds like a v8 also i have a helix throttle body spacers k&n intake custom 31/4 inch exaust wit a gibson muffler and a magnaflow high flow cat march underdrive pulley and power steering pulley jet performance module stage 2 belltech drop kit 3 front 4rear jet shift kit and a edelbrock stage 2 cam and valvetrain all and all i dyno'd out at 353 hp 340lb so im satisfied
