i bought a cold air intake last season and it claimed better gas mileage and more power..well i saw a little hp but worse gas mileage.. but i came up with an idea. i took a piece of 6'' duct work and slipped it over the filter and directly to my grill and now holy $%#^ it gave me 60 extra miles and noticable increase in bottom end torque.. i was astonished ..thats a 20% increase in fuel mileage and also the cheapest mod i've ever used!!!!

no sorry i don't got any pics ..but i'll tell u one thing it doesn't look very pretty but hey for an extra 20% increase i'll leave it on.and it's an airaid filter plus i've made my own tornado intake thing that goes inside of the hose rigth b4 the tb maybe that helps to don't know but i'm lovin it ..now i get 27.4 mpg in my 01 dak ext cab short box and i've also got larger tires on it 245 /75/16"

So if I understand you right, you stuck the duct right into the grill? So it's visible from outside? Wouldn't that suck in water into the engine? Yeah, and 27.4mpg is impressive. I get about 22mpg on pure highway driving in a 97 3.9L extended cab, everything is stock. About 17mpg on mixed city/highway driving. I wonder if I can improve my mileage with this mod.

actually u can't run it right up to the grill cuz the one ac line is in the way sooo its back from the grill about 6 inches.. i removed the rubber from beside the head light and put a piece window screen there soo bugs and @#$@ won't get thruu and it'll keep my filter cleaner..soo basically its straight thru right to the filter...do u think if its raining the amount of that actually got to filter would harm the motor.back in the old days they used water injection in front of the filter to keep the engine cooler!!!

I'm not sure, but I know it's possible to get water inside. Somehow people get their engines screwy once they put a cai on, and that's not even being exposed so much. I dunno, it's just a concern especially when I live in Vancouver, BC, where it tends to rain.

His setup is a way for relatively cool air in front of the radiator to go directly to the air box. He kept the stock filter box, which is baffled and has a huge air space under the filter for heavy stuff to settle out of the air stream. If he still uses OE style paper filters, his engine will be just fine. The typical CAI setup has no provision for this - it's simply a cone style coarse weave gauze connected to a pipe straight to the intake manifold. Depending on the location of the filter, dirt and water can get through that gauze quite easily.
Never put the CAI filter in the wheel well area.

Ive actually had a mechanic squirt small amounts of water into my throttle body...u do this and rev it up ...it will bog but still run...the steam it develops cleans engine deposits...so i dont think having a little water get into intake duct is the end of the world

It is more or less a cheap and easy ram air setup. I wonder if adding a funneling device to the end of the end of the duct work, to force a little more air into the hose, would help gain a little more horsepower or gas economy?

Moving the air intake from the stock location to the grill only reduces manifold tempurature by about twenty degree. You can caluclate what a 20 degree drop in temperature will give in terms of horsepower. If you think that little change gives you a noticable increase just think what reducing the tempurature of the intake by 120 degrees will do. It doesn't do as much as you think because that happens to me every winter.

Ram air is almost a fallacy. You have to be doing doing about 80 mph to have even a tiny affect. Oh, and I definately don't get better mileage with the cold winter air entering my engine.

I have a K&N drop in filter on my truck with the factory plastic "elbow" removed and a screen put in its place. I removed the centre part of the rubber flap on the pass. side of the rad and also glued and siliconed some screen so the bugs wouldn't get in. I cut a piece of aluminum sheeting about 8" high about 12" long with a slight bend in it near the air box and attached it to the A/C lines near the front with some rubber insulated clamps to stop the hot air from being thrown into the filter from the fan. It basically creates an open tunnel for the cooler air from the front to enter the filter box. You can hear the roar when you step on it and it does seem to create a bit more power but very little. The faster I go, the better it works, just like the previous poster said. No water gets in and it was a cheaper fix than buying the K&N FIPK.

Here's something else I've observed. Using a remote temperature probe placed both in front of the flap on the driver side and just in side the opening over the fender well there is less than five degrees difference. As much as people may hate to hear it it means the designers knew what they were doing.

Another thing I observed is that the difference between ambient temp and at each of those places is about five degrees. I've seen people spend a lot of money and a lot of time trying to pick up cooler air from below the bumper. I haven't checked this area but I believe it would normally be warmer because of its proximity to the road. On a hot day you have a layer of air that can be up to 100 degrees warmer than the outside air above the road.

Have you tested the area inside the pass side fender well where the factory originally has the air picked up? Maybe there is a cooler spot there and taking off the plastic elbow may not even help. Don't know, just askin'

I mentioned that. It is only marginally warmer, about five degrees. Taking the piece off that goes to that area will cause inlet temperatures to increase by about 30 degrees.

Another couple of reasons why I get 27 .4 MPG is i got a shorter belt to bypass the a/c pulley, i've also made my own tornado thing thats goes right in front of the t/b and i've got a t/b spacer which also helps i think..and got a magna flow performance cat and muff into duals which i don't if it helps but it sounds cool...now i also purchased those magnets that clamp onto the fuel line.. all these things help at lest a little bit.. i believe.. another question is .does anybody else gots those magnets on thier truck if soo tell me if they've helped you!!!

davo12, how are you calculating your mileage? magnets, tornados, etc... are just gimmicks. a way for someone to make a quick buck. they've been around for decades and have been proven before to be absolutely worthless. don't believe everything you see on TV.
