my 1990 v6 3.9 was running great 'til the other day when I stopped at a gas station it wouldn't start again - the starter won't energise.
Took the starter out, got checker to test it and its dead. Battery is good, have installed a new starter motor and new relay but all I get is a click when I turn the ignition. I can feel the relay working. Any ideas where to look next?

i just installed a new one too. make sure all connections are clean, you might have to disconnect them again and clean them with a wire brush.

Your saying NEW STARTER..... Bet it's a rebuilt and not so uncommon to get a bad rebuild anything in car parts. They replace ONLY what they feel is absolutely needed period. Still most likely you got something wrong installing.

So many problems .... So little time

put a volt meter on the starter cable and hit
the key it should be same as batt volts if not
bad connection or ground

tap lightly with hammer as someone said you can
get a bad starter with a flat spot or remove
and reinstal may have jamed gear

bench test with a set of jumpers off a good batt

found the problem - a contact inside the block by the relay was very badly corroded - which explains why I was getting a good reading on the meter until the motor tried to draw some current.
All's well now, thanks for the input guys
