I have a 2002 Dakota SXT 5 speed. I just recently purchased the truck and noticed lately that it doesn't idle like it used to. It feels as if something is missing, that it is not a consistent idle. When you rest your arm or hand anywhere on the truck you can really feel the rough idle. It shakes very inconsistently and is definately not smooth. Another problem is when I go to give it gas, the engine sputters or delays for a second then revs like normal. The tach does not move for that second either. This really gets annoying when I am on a hill. I have to give it more gas to compensate for the delay. Sometimes when I begin to accelerate, I have to have the rpms up over 2500 just to prevent it from stalling. I know that I am rambling on and on but this is very frustrating, especially since this truck is relatively new to me. I am bringing it back to the dealer this Friday and would like to know more about this problem from you all before I do. The reason for this is that it is NOT a Dodge Dealer and they might not be familiar with the problem. Thank you so much for your time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way the PCM displays no codes.

Here's what I'd do... all is quite cheap.
Replace distributor cap and rotor - Napa p/n's MO26 and MO28.
Check the plugs and replace if necessary
While the truck is running after dark, use a spray bottle and mist the plug wires a bit. If you see sparking, replace the wires.
Also wouldn't hurt to clean out your iac...remove the tb, spray the iac plunger off real good with carb cleaner and wipe it clean without twisting, pushing, or pulling on it (you'll screw it up), then let it dry. Replace the tb gasket before reinstalling it (costs around $2).

i agree with josh and add 1 more thing. after you've done as josh suggested above, reset the PCM, then start the truck and let it idle, with no accessories running, don't touch the gas for about 3-5 minutes then shut it off. that will let it re-learn idle parameters.

What I do to reset my pcm is... reset it, start and let idle for about 1 minute without touching the gas, shut it off, start and let idle for another minute, shut it off, start and rev it up, drive, or whatever. Since we all seem to have different methods, anyone know the "proper" way? lol

yeah, knowing the proper procedure would help. since i haven't got a manual yet for the dak, i am just going by what i used to do to reset the idle motor on an old 91 gran prix i used to have. not that i would even want to compare that piece of junk to my dak though!
