Message: Had the same problem on my 93 5.2. I dont know if your is the same but heres what we did. Put the old pump or pulley in a vice. Next, get a stout wrench and clamp it on really tight. Then just use a cheater bar to get that sucker off. If I can remember, there was loc-tite on the threads after we got the fan off.

Message: The best way to remove this fan clutch from all v6,v8's is to use a air hammer with a punch bit.One little hit & the fan clutchis loose, just unscrew it. Or go to your local parts house & buy a fan clutch wrench set. apox. cost $45

What did you use to seal the water heater tube out the side of the pump? Is it combination o-ring and form a gasket?

Message: I just had to replace my water pump today with 90,000 miles. Decided to change the original belt too. The Haynes book I got was of NO USE for the 95 Dakota. I ended up removing the water pump, pulley, fan, and fan clutch as an assembly with the fan shroud also. What a mess! I then found out what you were all talking about...the big nut behind the fan. I was able to use a pipe wrench while jamming the impeller with a screw driver to get it off. OK, now how to get the new one tight enough? I'll try to do the reverse and use loctite I guess. To bad I new this would happen now, I would have saved for the Hughes Engines cam kit and did the swap at the same time. I need to replace the noisy timing chain too!

Message: To C. Morgan
Thanks for the tip! I have been a collision repair tech for 30 years. I have bought all the speciality tools for holding/removing the threaded type fan clutchs and have still always dreaded the chore. I was a little concerned about brindleing the water pump bearing so I regulated the pressure to my panel cutter (air hammer) to 50psi and gave the clutch nut a very short burp. I was amazed that I could turn the clutch off by hand. Thanks again, Rixter

Message: Barry, if you are facing the engine, turn the nut counter clockwise or towards the air box. if the last person torqued down on it, you will probably hav eto shim the pully with something to be able to losen the nut. I used a block of wood and a bar to pry with. not too much pressure though, dont want to warp the pully. when you put it back on, you should just snug it, not torque it. it cant come off.

Message: Hey Kyle, I would use some 3M weather strip adhesive that stuff works wonders for sealing things up, i also use it to glue/set the water pump gasket in place so it wont move when putting the pump back on the engine.

Message: To bkabe,
First read C Morgan's post dated 3/31/02, then read my reply to his post dated 10/14/04. The holes in the pressed on pulley are for a spanner wrench. If you still want to go with the wrenches after reading the posts, Schley Products makes a nice one (part #99800). They have a web site.
Good luck,
Rixter

Message: Hi everyone,
I googled looking for answers to my '92 Dakota water pump replacement woes and I found this site. There's alot of good info here. I just thought I would add to it all by relaying something from my experience.
RE: the spanner wrenches - Autozone will rent you a set for 40 bucks, and refund the 40 when you bring it all back. They are a must have for this job. We used the spanner to hold the fan pulley in place then turned the nut with a huge 1 & 1/2" open ended wrench. That plus a little rust eater did the trick. The rust eater works awesome by the way. I live in the midwest and it seems like everything under my Dodge has a huge coating of rust. Now if I could just get my mufflers to last a little longer!

Message: midwest and you have rust woes? anyway I moved from upstate ny to colorado so I'm thinking my rust woes are much less anyway onto the water pump.
mines a '96 dakota v6 no a/c when I bought the pump at autozone (always had a great time w/ autozone btw) the guy suggested I rent the spanner bar set and since it is free so long as you return it why wouldn't I agree they didn't have quite the right size set so it took my some doing to remove the large nut on the pump hub because the wrench they gave my was an eighth to large it would slip off every so often (GLOVES) not sure what my real results of that were but I ended up with a closed end wrench on one of the 4 nuts the hold the pulley torquing against the wrench on the oversize hub nut.
now my issue is like I've seen with a few of the above is the heater hose o-ring issues for starters I reshaped the short metal pipe quite a bit just to get it out of the old pump and voila it leaked when reinstalled on the new one. so after a nice ride on the bike too and from autozone my sealant of choice is permatex "97 super high tack" gasket sealant advertised to seal hose connections etc. 3 hours set-time so I'm giving it overnight, we'll see how it goes.
replaced because of some awful rattling/grating noise that would come and go mostly present recently after startup.

Message: I am replacing the water pump on my 93 Dodge
Dakota, it's a V6 with air. I took out the radiator and fan
shroud to make things easier to get at and now I'm lost.
I bought the book from autozone but it is no help. How
do I get the fan assembly off. The last time I replaced
a water pump it was on a 77 chevy nova. Is there any
place I can go for pictures and diagrams that spell
things out and tell what these things are that you are
talking about. Appreciate your help.
