In all the years that I have been working on cars and trucks, I've never learned any better "trick" than the one "C. Morgan" posted on here on 3/31/02. I used it today to remove the fan clutch from the water pump on my Ramcharger, and in two seconds after using my air hammer on it, it was off!!

TOO COOL! Thanks for the "trick" Mr. Morgan! (here is his trick copied below...)

>>>>The best way to remove this fan clutch from all v6,v8's is to use a air hammer with a punch bit.One little hit & the fan clutchis loose, just unscrew it. Or go to your local parts house & buy a fan clutch wrench set. apox. cost $45 <<<<<

What sort of hominid decided to just push the heater hose pipe into the damn water pump? Really, a good old threaded pipe or a few more inches of hose seem more durable. Plenty of sealer is the best kludge I can come up with but hardly tollerate.

I had to change my water pump on my '96 dakota 2wd, 3.9L and it was nearly impossible to get the fan and clutch off as one unit. having the correct tools makes such a difference! First I had to lossen one of the bolts on the water pump pulley and wrap a cable around it to the ac pump pulley. I snapped the wire two different times (it was heavy duty wire so you know that thing was on there tight!). Next I grabbed some 1/4" nylon rope and tied it again the same way, it snapped too but held up longer than the wire, surprisingly. Then I doubled the rope and tried again. This time it worked! My main concern was if I was turning it the right way...viewing it from the front you need to turn the nut counter-clockwise to take it off. I hope I can get it on tight enough with the rope. i hope this helps someone out there with the same problem. car repairs are so much easier with the right tools!

I took the water pump off first (with the fan intact), then I flipped it upside-down and jammed a screwdriver in between the blades in the back. Then I set the pump on a cinder block and bracing it with my foot, I used a pipe wrench on the bolt. It came off like melted stick of butter. Then I spent the next 4 hrs trying to figure out how to get the pulley off the pump.

I put a 5/8 socket on the tensioner for the belt, and pulled on the big adjustable wrench and mine came right off. i changed the clutch to a shallower one with the same fan swapped then added the shroud that was freshly repaired, and it runs nice and cool.
My problem is that I bought the 92 Dakota 4x4 from a friend who had gone thru two fans & radiators, two belts and two water pumps.
In both repairs, he paid for ALL the parts & labor just to have it happen again. So, I took the fan with clutch off, and in doing that I saw that the pulley had broken free from the water pump and allowed the fan & clutch to clobber the radiator & top tank. The water pump was a new one from Carquest and they replaced it, but they wouldn't replace the radiator even though it was needing the third one.
How often do these pulleys break loose from their pressed on fitting?

I just replaced the water pump on my 93, 3.9 Liter, Dakota. The fan clutch is held by a right handed thread (Righty Tighty/Lefty Loosey) 1&7/16" nut. AutoZone sells a "Fan Clutch Wrench Ford 4.9L" for $17.99 OEM#27018. The large 2&1/4" wrench was of no use with my Dodge. My original water pump had 4 bolts, I put a LARGE screwdriver across 2 of them to prevent turning against the wrench. If I have to replace the new pump, it has 4 holes without bolts. I'll drill 2 matching holes in the 2&1/4 wrench and use that to prevent turning.

There is a rubber bypass hose beneath the AC Compressor. I removed 2 bolts securing the compressor to it's bracket, and pivoted it on its hoses to the right side of the vehicle. The Alternator also must be removed from it's bracket. The bracket can then be removed to gain access to the hose, IMO not replacing the bypass hose is going to bite you later.
