Message: "MY BABY" has been sold. Thanks to all who contacted me in reference to my All Original 1989 Dodge Dakota Sport Convertible 4 x 4. It has left North Carolina and is on its way to its NEW home in California. For all who doubted the asking price of $7,000.00 or the skeptics who said I'll give you KBB or Edmunds price, it did sell for VERY CLOSE to $7,000.00 (And I think he would have paid more and still been HAPPY). So for all those owners of these "classic" trucks don't give them away. This was a "Truely" nice truck in great shape and I'm gonna miss it. Thanks again to all who inquired about this truck. Have a GREAT DAY. GoTopless>>>>>>>

If anyone reads, I still have mine and KBB or edmunds is not right.

Message: JBO
While I feel the value of anything is the exact point where what someone is willing to accept exactly equals what someone is willing to pay and find no problem with anyone asking whatever they want for the vehicle they own,I am confused by your statement regarding KBB and Edmunds "not being right". If the values they quote are based on actual sales (as they claim) it would seem to factor in rarity, collectability and just plain "fun-ness" of these trucks. Are you saying they misrepresent how they determine the values they quote? As someone interested in purchasing one of these fine trucks at a fair value to both the buyer and seller I would be interested in what references you would suggest to consult for a more valid objective fair market value? CPI? Black Book? I have seen too many E-Bay auctions faked and too many trucks not sell to base it on them and too many trucks on the market for months (even a few for more than a year)to base it on an average of asking prices. To me a truck that smells of tobacco smoke, shows heavy wear or is modified has no value at all, one on the opposite coast is automatically worth less by the value of the shipping costs. Conversely, one that has original and well maintained paint, interior and engine compartment with full records,or with the particular options or colors I want, or is a one owner has extra value to me personally and i would up what I was willing to pay. I would suggest using Edmunds and/or KBB and adjusting for location, personal likes and dislikes might be the most valid way to go whether buying or selling.

Message: Hey JBO; What did you mean by not being able to compete???? Just so you know, he did tell me that your truck was very nice and that he would like to have purchased both trucks. So anyone else out there looking might like to know that your truck is worth inquiring about. Don't know your asking price. You may want to let everyone know. I was unsure as to value, because of this ongoing debate on "realistic" resale value for these trucks. I set a price that I felt comfortable with. I can live with the selling price and I still believe that he felt he got a "bargain" on mine. I'm sure I could've held out or kept it for sale until I found the perfect buyer willing to give me mega bucks for it. I've got plenty of pictures and lots of great memories including the day I drove it off the showroom floor. I had this baby for 14 plus years and I am proud to say it looked pretty darn good for its age. Heck, think what it might be worth in another 14 years. Hope you have success in selling yours and getting your price. For all you prospective buyers out there keep looking for one of these babies as you can't imagine the fun you will have driving one of these "classic" headturning trucks. You won't experience that until you own one, that's for sure. Thanks again. GoTopless>>>>>
PS-Tom you missed out on a great truck-You should have come over the hill and took a look before it got gone.***JUST KIDDING***

Message: Hey Tom,
Well let me explain. After owning one of these trucks and the fun that is had driving one, the condition that mine is in, and the number of them that were made, I feel that edmunds just doesn't have the correct valuation for these trucks that are clearly collectible and good collectibles at that.
I don't think I would call them liars or anything like that, I simply feel that these trucks are really worth the kind of asking prices (and greater) that Go-Topless was asking.
I do not know that I would have said the same thing BEFORE I owned the truck. However, after having it now for just a short time, I really enjoy the truck and think they are just plain neat.
I agree with your first statement about buyers and sellers agreeing on price 100%. However I am also fully aware of what some so called "industry experts" can do to ruin valuation of certain markets. Such as the cost for gold. Gold is right now being artificially manipilated to keep it down and the low cost it is now. (Thats a whole other topic ;-))
I simply believe that sometimes organizations that are meant to be a consumer watch to help buyers AND sellers sometimes just get it wrong and there opinions sometimes sway someone from making an otherwise different decision. I think everyone should do their due diligence with everything in life and do what is right to them and what makes them happy. KBB and Edmunds, I feel, is wrong about their values concerning these trucks and perhaps hopefully they will improve in the future. But anyone can use what they like as a gauge, It does not matter to me.
Good Luck!

I mean your truck was one of those great rare ones and someone one day will pay more than what they paid you for it IF it is kept in as good a condition as yours was.
Your buyer was really impressed and I am SURE he knew he got a great deal.
He had always had an interest in them but I think the original sticker price in 89' shocked him a little.
Now, some years laters, he is able to buy one in great shape, all original, decked out.
The trucks are nice and I will keep it and have fun with it until whatever happens!
PS Mine IS in great shape and I believe worth every penny of what GT was asking!
Enjoy them all you owners out there!
JBO
PS GT, I would like to see a few of the pictures you have. Please send to befree@carolina.rr.com
THANKS!

Message: For what it is worth, on page 30 of the June 1991 issue of Motor Trend there is a small write up on the Convertible Dakota (actually I kept this since then waiting for the day I find one I could both like and afford). It mentions the full list price of the Dakota S as being about $7,800 and that the conversion fee was $3,300. $10,000 or so for a new one back then if it was not a loaded up LE or Sport Editon.

If finances go well, may actually be able to afford a nice one before they become too collectible. It's been interesting reading all your posts, I'll continue to do so, waiting.
