Spec: 95 Dodge Dakota 4cyl 5sp, 180k

Problem: After about 15mins of driving oil pressure drops during acceleration. I mean drops to NOTHING. Once you get into 5th year everything stablizes. Then about 30mins the engine wants you to be accelerating to keep oil pressure up...hence 5th year bottoms out oil pressure again. Then after about 45 mins it levels back out to want 5th gear again.

When the truck is idle oil pressure is fine. Oil has just been changed recently, but was not that dirty when I changed it but seemed thin. Truck doesn't starts to get hot but fan kicks in and temp is normal.

Really dumb question maybe but what could cause this? I am mechanically ignorant so let me know what I should check. I can, with help from my friend, do anything that needs to be done to fix this. Just need a little guidance on what to look for.

Thx in advance.

My 92 dakota had great oil pressure when cold but when it got warm the oil pressure dropped to almost zero and going down the road it only had 20 psi (when it should have 40+) turned out the thrust bearing on the crank was ate because of a bad crank and the crank moved fron to back about 1\8th of an inch...something to look at ..

OIL PRESSSURE GAUGE WENT TO ZERO - STOPPED, CUT OFF, RESTARTED-ALL O.K DID THIS SEVERAL TIMES WITH CHECK OF FULL CLEAN CRANCASE OF OIL. DECITED IT WAS GUAGE PROBLEM. DROVE ABOUT 120 MORE HIGHWAY MILES TILL ABOUT 111,000 ON ODOMETER WITH TEMP GUAGE NORMAL, TACH HOLDING STEADY, NO ADDITIONAL DEMAND ON ACCELERATOR POSITION...PASSED LONG LINE OF CARS AT UP TO 80
MPH. HEARD HIGH PING LIKE CHEAP GAS. AT NEXT CONVENIENCE STATION PULLED IN AND THEN HEARD THE FAMILIAR RATTLE OFN TAPPETS, ROD BEARINGS, ETC.. REPLACED THE ENGINE WITH USED . THE MECHANIC ASKED HOW LONG HAD I DRIVEN WITH THE OVERHEATEDE ENGINE SINCE ALL GASKETS WERE COOKED...THE REPLACEMENT ENGINE NOW HAS ABOUT 120,000 AND THE SAME THING IS OCCURING - AGAIN WITH FULL CLEAN OIL AND NO OVERHEAT INDICATED, JUST PRESSURE GOES TO ZERO AT SURFACE STREET SPEEDS -35 MPH. MY MECHANIC IS BEWILDERED, AND SINCE IT IS A 4 WHEEL DRIVE, TO SIMPLY PULL THE PAN TO CHECK FOR A CLOGING PUMP COST $1500 IT IS THE ABSOLUTE LAST THING I WANT TO DO..IS THIS COMMON FOR OVER 100,000 MILE DAKOTAS ? HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED..

From what I understand, this is a problem with all Dodge Dakota Pickups manufactured before the '98 models. I have a '97 which has developed this problem 3 times (thus far) and I'm finally getting rid of it. It has something to do with the design of the oil uptake line that hangs down in the sump of the pan. In my case, when I make a hard right, or even cruise around a right curve, the oil pressure drops off. And if the curve is long enough, the oil pressure will drop completely off and trigger the "check engine" light and tone. It's as if the oil all goes to the left side of the pan and is unable to be picked up by the line. Oddly, this does not occur when making a hard left or left curve. I'm told that a form of gunk buildup over time creates the problem at the opening of the uptake tube (because of its design) and that the tube has since been redesigned on '98 models and up. About once a year I have to have the gunk removed from the tube to correct the problem. Why Dodge has not designed a replacement tube that will not have this problem, and that will fit on models built before '98, is an unanswered question to date.

When I start my 97 Dakota V8 with 89k miles there is a about a 5 second delay before the oil pressure gauge indicates any pressure. Usually its fine after that. I don't know if I should replace the oil pressure sensor, or if its caused by the design defect that everyone is talking about. The intake gasket had to be replaced a while back after I discovered that the oil level was unusually low. Not sure if the engine was damaged, but the pressure delay problem did start shortly after that costly repair.

I've had the same problem on my '95 Dakota Sport 3.9V6 for a few months now. It's at 159k miles now, but I think the problem started a few thousand miles ago. I never knew where the sending unit was, but I suspected it from the onset (instead of clogged oil strainer), because I religously change the oil. Thanks to this web site and another one, I found out the sending unit is hidden next to the distributor, at the back of the engine. Mine was completely blown and the source of my oil leak, too.

The only fix I've found for this problem is to use 20w50 motor oil. This stops the oil pressure from dropping to zero on my truck.I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT 4x4 V6 automatic that I bought used with 127,000 miles on it.The oil pressure gauge was dropping to zero at idle. The heavy oil stopped that. The problem resurfaced after the oil got 3,000 miles on it.I then put in new oil(20w50) and the problem was gone again for another 3,000 miles.

Just bought a 99 Dakota with the 6 cyl. It as 106,000 on it. Noticed the Check Gauges light on and then saw the oil pressure gauge jump from zero to around 45. There is a slight delay when starting for the pressure to come up. By the sticker on the window it is due for an oil change. No wonder the guy I bought it from was willing to deal. Good Luck to all with this problem.

Hey, so I recently bought a 2000 dakota with an
automatic and 4.7 v-8 with 155,000 miles on it now
and it drives smooth. I just found out that my
idle oil pressure is zero. My gauge reads normal
at cold, warm and idle, but the shop I took it to
did a manual pressure test and showed 40psi at
cold 2,200rpm, 25psi at warmed up 2,200 rpm.

The reason why they did the test was because the
truck has a ticking sound that is more pronounced
when the engine is cold, and because the passenger
side valve cover gasket was leaking. When they
took off the valve cover they said the valves
looked fine and didn't think the ticking sound was
from the valves, so thats when the manual pressure
test was done.

So I have narrowed it down to being either the oil
pump is clogged/broken, or the barrings are too
worn. It will cost me $660 to remove the oil pan
and find out what the problem is (includes re-
installation), and another $330ish to replace the
pump/filter if that is the problem, but about
$2,000 to replace all the barrings (if there is no
damage to the crankshaft).

I can't afford to replace the barrings, and I
don't want to pay to remove the oil pan if I can't
fix the problem. Also I don't want to replace the
oil pump if the zero idle oil pressure damaged the
cylinders or pistons enough that the engine will
die soon anyway. So, I don't know what to do. I
could save all that money and just drive it till
it dies, then replace the engine (i would have to
finance it), or I could just take the risk to
repair it now and hope the repair will last me a
while.

The timing chain cover has also been replaced, if
that is a sign of a past broken timing belt, it
might mean that when the chain broke it caused
debris to fall into the oil pan and clogged the
screen.

But my question to anyone is: With what I know
about the truck (not much), is lack of oil
pressure at idle most likely caused by a
clogged/damaged pump or something else?

The truck drives well, it doesn't feel like the
engine is vibrating (if that happens with bad
barrings), and the valves look great, and it seems
like the maintenance has been kept up on the
vehicle. I don't think it is burning oil yet and
the transmission shifts smoothly. There is only
no pressure at idle and it is at 40psi cold and
25psi warmed-up, so it is getting oil flow
sometimes and is not totally dry. If it were a
clogged screen the pressure should increase when
it is warmed-up because of easier flow of oil when
warm. But if it were worn barrings the thinner
warm oil would flow too freely and the pressure
would drop. So the signs are pointing to barrings
in my opinion, unless oil pumps can partially fail
in which case a partially failed fan might be able
to pump the thicker cold oil to a higher pressure
while not being able to do the same to the thin
sloppy warm oil; can oil pumps partially fail and
am I right about how they work?

Where is the dash oil pressure sensor? Because it
is still reading normal and depending on where it
is located and where they took the manual oil
pressure test from I might be able to tell more
about the problem.

If it looks like it is the pump, should I replace
it with OEM or after-market? I've read that sludge
can easily clog stock oil screens and pumps. Is
there anything else I should check/replace/clean
when everything is out from under the truck, when
I get the oil pan removed?

Come-on, I have a white quad cab with a 3 inch
body lift sitting on 33s, and I really want to
keep it.

My '98 has 208,000km on it. For the past week, the oil pressure gauge has fluctuated between 200-600kPa depending on whether I'm idling or moving. It drops drastically when I brake. At idle, the temp gauge goes up to around 115°C as the oil pressure drops, then goes back down below 55°C again as my RPMs increase. (I can avoid this by dropping into neutral and hitting the gas to increase RPMs when at a light or in stop-&-go traffic). Also, when the temp gauge goes up, I lose hot air flow into the cab & get cold air blowing only (not a good thing with the coldest part of a Canadian winter ahead of us). When the temp gauge drops, I get hot air again. (WTF??? I'd have expected the opposite.) Any ideas? It's going in to my mechanic tomorrow. I'll let you know.

sounds like your not getting coolant flow, your temp gauge goes up because of lack of flow and you heater
stops getting hot water to it because of lack of
flow. are you getting and marbling of the oil in
your oil cap? it will look milky white, maybe you
have a bad (head?) gasket, otherwise i dont know how
a lack of oil pressure would effect coolant flow

My mechanic ran a test on the system and said my oil was low. He topped it up and checked the system for leaks, but didn't find any. The seals are all okay. He said the age of the truck and the climate here will have an impact (obviously), and that the pressure is a little weak, but not weak enough that it will be a concern for some time. The coolant was low too, and I have a bit of a leak in one frost plug above the transmission, but they put some system seal in the reservoir and that seems to have eliminated the problem. I still don't get full-on heat until the truck has been running for nearly an hour, but I can live with that. I'm rarely in the truck that long anyways, except when going on vacation trips. Thanks for your initial information.

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota, and the oil pressure, at first
(2months ago) kept dropping every time I pressed the brake
pedal, and within a second came back to normal. Now it keeps
dropping at any time. It has become very annoying to ear the
"ding" chime every 5 minutes of so.

My mechanic thought it was a loose wire, but it is not.

Anybody has any idea as to what it is??

Michel
