Looking for a PC computer...... yea that's right a PC computer. Pentium 4 with 1 gig or higher medium size hard drive and a CD/DVD drive.

I don't want a piece of shit , all I need is the computer... I have a good moniter, burner, keyboard, speakers, scaner, etc.

But I do want a good quality box with decent components to last...... But I don't want to spend a million dollars.

I would advise against the Pentium 4. You would be much better off with an athlon thunderbird, and as luck would have it, they are also less expensive.

I would stay away from amd. They are running hot! Go for the pIII celeron. The prices droped today. But if you want a p4 go with it.

mmm That's a confict of opinions....

OK how about this , I'll build one, anyone know a good site or source for quility cheap parts.

I'll need:

Motherboard
Power Source
Processor
Hard Drive - 40 or better
DVD drive
possible drivers, sound card & graphics

I have a couple of mechines I can start from, but I will need a motherboard, thiers are too small, and a fresh power source, the 333's may not be enough. My sound card is a Thunder Pro, I may want the Sound Blaster Live.

Basically I run mp3 music, connected to my sterio, pictures, and internet access...AOL :( . I have an old 133 and a 333 celeron the celeron is loaded to the max with 3 drives and a bunch of external stuff, scanner, burner, etc. (way too slow)

I do appreciate all your help.

Thanks

Pricewatch.com is definitely a place to look. We are in agreement there. I never got anything through there but they are a great service. A lot of my friends use them. Have you tried any computer shows? Sometimes you can get good deals at them. On Saturday I picked up a 256MB Micron Cas2 memory chip for $79. They had generic 256MBs for $42 and 128's for $23. For a Hard Drive I would look at a Comp USA. They have deals with rebates are hard to compete with. I saw a 20GB maxtor drive there on Monday for $49. Some other components you can get for free after waiting a month or so for the rebate.

Take it from someone who has built (as a hobby) more then 70 machines and is still building, if you use ANYTHING other then an ASUS or ABIT motherboard sooner or later you will have compatability issues with add-in components. Everone I talk to says FIC boards got there names because they are Freakin In-Compatable.

I have always used GIGABYTE M Boards.Other people I know have tried other boards but have also switched to Gigabyte. As far as compatability issues with add in cards that is more of a BIOS issue.Gigabyte uses AMI Bios
used to be Award.I have never had add in card
issues.

Stay away from maxtor HDs. Spend a few more bucks and get a Western Digital or IBM. They will last alot longer.

yer right about GIGABITE mobo's they are also pretty good but rank in my personal second tier as I had problems with them 3-4 years ago altho that seems to be a problem they solved, And yes most were bios issues but Chipset controllers create more problems then BIOS does and that is where I had my prblems was with the specific chipsets. Only Abit and ASUS have not to my knowledge ever used the chipsets that created the problems I was having with them. Jay I agree whole heartedly with you on WD hard drives my oldest boy is a network guru ad University of Dayton (a network with iver 12.000 pc's on it) and he see's a lot of HD failures. fewest are by WD, but I don't know if that is because of better reliablity or if so many more of the other, cheaper hard drives are installed by the makers and have saturated the net at his school. I have a raid w/3 WD 30 gigs on this Abit BE6-2 mobo that I wrote this on (the raid controller is on the mobo). I am using it as both a firewall and a server for my home net and as an every day PC. It has been on and running without reboot for 1937 hrs and no failures or lock -ups.

Hmmmm....AMD runs hot?!? Not with the correct fan installed. As for the Maxtor drives, yeah...they do like failing prematurely. I run Seagate SCSI (Server) and IBM Deskstar in my workstations.

As for uptime, my Windows2000 Advanced Server has been up for over 6 months without failure. (AMD Processor) ;)

This site has been running on an athlon since 8PM on December 31, 2000. The only time the machine has been off is when doing upgrades. Never had a failure.
