So yea, I was driving my fathers '92 Explorer XLT 4x4 today and the tranny started to slip bad. Since i was right next to the Wal-Mart so i pulled in. As soon as I stopped to let some old lady walk accross the street, I heard a funny sounding hiss, followed by a leaking noise. It wouldnt budge after that. I hope its bad enough to have to replace the whole truck!(hehe, i dont like that it much) Any ideas about what coulda happened?

Is it a 5 speed?? My S10 clutch plate spring dilodged once and the truck was jammed in gear. I was actually able to get home and it was about a 10 mile trip. The couple times I had to stop and of course stall it at a light I was able to get it running. I turned the key and the starter was moving the truck along while the motor was turning over untill the engine kicked in. What a piece of shi.. that truck was. Thank god I discovered Dodge.

Nope. Its an auto. Yea, just got the repair estamate. ($2000+) hmmm, owning a second Dodge is sounding better and better every day.

ITS DECEMBER 4TH AND THE TRANSMISSION IN MY 92 EDDIE BAUER EXPLORER STARTED TO SLIP OR JUST NOT GO INTO THE NEXT GEAR QUICKLY. IT ONLY DOES THIS IN THE MORNINGS WHEN ITS COLD. AFTER RUNNING IT FOR A FEW MINUTES, IT DOES FINE. IM THINKING, FLUSH THE TRANNY, INSTALL NEW FILTER AND NEW OIL. UMM, DONT KNOW IF THERES ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD DO. I see you still haven't found the "CAPS LOCK" button. So let me help you; take your left hand (that would be the one not jammed up your ass), move it to the far left side of the keyboard. Now count slowly, three buttons from the bottom--here let me help you, ONE....TWO...THREE. Now press that button ONCE (and only once). Voila your Caps are now off.

My Dak has been in the shop and the tranny out 3 times in 31000 miles. All manufacturing problems.

WTF are you talking about, this guy has a 10 year old AOD. Those were some of the worst transmissions that ford used, even their first AODEs weren't that good.
He should call ford, maybe they'll put him in one of those "look what we can build" ad campaings, like those million mile Toyotas :)...That trans is on the downward slope of its life. (the one that I had and all the ones i've heard about, this is how it starts.)
Dude if the motor and body are in good shape, take it to a local trans shop, get a rebuild done and a mild shift kit...A trans works harder to cushion shifts than to shift crisply.

You seem sarcastic about the Million Mile Toyota?
Not unheard of. Besides my 2001 Dak, I still have my 1989 Toyota. It has 346,000 original miles. Nothing other than regular brakes and 3 alternators. One timing chain at 80k.
You are correct however, that he was talking about a 92 Ford. That really doesn't relate to anything.......LOL.....my bad.... :-)

I meant that those sh!tty Automatic OverDrive trans were built with tinfoil and pencil shavings, and ford would be surprised to hear that there was ONE that acually lasted this long with out the use of voodoo. :)

Yeah, hard to believe a 92 Ford tranny lasted this long with no problems! :-) I hope my Dakota tranny last a few more years (as many times it's been pulled for repair). I just paid off my 2001 Dak, and looking to by a Ram, but the trade in is so miserable :-(

I love my Dak, but if you're talking about reliability stats of US trucks, Ford wins.
I understand the love of a Dodge, I own one, but Fords are better built.
If you really want build quality over anything else in a truck, you want a Toyota. Stats prove that too.
I like my Dak for the room and engine power and have given up reliability (seen the shop many times under warrenty so far).
Depends what you really want. I know I'll get flamed over this.

Don't go purely on stats, especially stats from the manufacturer of that vehicle.
I'am a Biochemist, a pHd, I deal with statistics all day....I can take the same numbers and give you two totally opposite answers...its called massaging. Keep that in mind when you hear about the FDA and drug approvals.
I do agree with you about Fords and longevity...atleast years ago they were better. But now I would say Dodge, Chevy, Ford, Toyota...its all about the same. Automobile evolution, no matter what the brand, have the same force applied to them...customer satisfaction, manufacturing metods etc. so eventually they will all be about the same in quality.
My (educated) two cents.
p.s. That "Huh" guy is an idiot, he should back-off and give people a little more respect. This Richard guy has a problem and he's looking for help, not an immature a$$hole!
