IP: Logged Message: I may be uniformed but... Why does it seem to me that everyone with a third gen dakota have to sup the heck out thier truck to get it to do anything? I have a 96 4x4 318 with only magna-flow pipes and it runs the 1/4 mile at 90mph. I had it dyno tested and it put out 210 horse and 310 torque at the rear wheels. Is it me or does no one like to start out with something good and then improve on that? I have heard nothing but bad things about the third gen dakotas. Please tell me if I have missed the mark. All of the Dakota's have had their problems...at least out (vent) blower-motor switches don't burn out. ;) (You know, that $7.00 part on the passenger-side firewall.) Bernd D. | Bernd GenIII 1/14/2001 23:28:05 | IP: Logged Message: Mark...I choose to refer to the engine as a "V8 that went on a diet"...two less mouths/cylinders to feed. ;) But, even the Gen-II V8's are quicker than the Gen-III V8's. | 95DakotaV8 GenII 1/22/2001 19:49:34 | IP: Logged Message: Bernd, I thought the 318 was the same in the GenII and GenIII. Is the GenII quicker due to the weight issue? I love my V8 but can't wait to get that new Hurst shifter for the NV3500, I would never give up my stick but it slows me down from 1st to second. BTW, All I've done to my 318 was drop in a K&N with a Craftsman Air-Flow Enhancer, new plugs, synthetic rear end fluid, tranny fluid and ATF and a 22" glass pack with an 18" chrome sound chamber, my wife can hear me pull up to the curb while in the house with the doors closed. Oh, you are wondering what the Craftsman Air-Flow enhancer is... it is a 3/8" Craftsman drill bit (sharp) putting two rows of holes around the big'ol round air cleaner housing. Swiss cheese kind of, a little open air flavor, with an OEM look. KJR 1995 Dakota Club Cab SLT 4x4, 5.2L, 5spd, 3.90 rear end |
| Bernd GenIII 1/24/2001 08:41:40 | IP: Logged Message: No, the engine may be the same size, but the newer Magnum engines are roller engines vs. the older ones (pre-95) are standard hydraulic (lifters/cam). Also, the Late '95+ are OBD-II and the older ones are OBD-I (emissions system). There's more differences than just the engine. Stick a Dynomax Muffler on that 318 and an Open Element (14" Round x 2.5" Tall) filter and you'll see even better performance. That glasspack is more restrictive than a "Turbo Muffler". Bernd D. | 95DakotaV8 GenII 1/27/2001 20:17:05 | IP: Logged Message: Bernd, my truck was made in Mar 95, do you think it has roller rockers or hydrualic? I have used the VIN decoder on the DML site but don't know where else to look for codes (other than the tag under the hood and door jamb) that would indicate OBD II. I didn't know glass packs were restrictive, I thought they were a straight through type muffler with small perforations. Will a 14x3 open air base plate have the necessary things to plug into the manifold. The breather tube runs from the driver side valve cover to the air cleaner. Can I put a push in breather in the valve cover instead? KJR 1995 Dakota Club Cab SLT 4x4, 5.2L, 5spd, 3.90 rear end |
| Bernd GenIII 1/28/2001 10:03:50 | IP: Logged Message: It doesn't have "Roller Rockers"...just standard rocker arms...but you can swap them over to the Crower 1.6:1 (or 1.7:1 Kit). As for the Cam, yes...you have a Hydraulic Roller Cam. Glasspacks are still based on old techology and are somewhat restrictive. Moving over to a "Turbo Muffler" (such as a Dynomax, Flowmaster, Gibson, or Borla) will flow much better and also will have a more mellow tone. Yes, you can use a K&N Push In (Open/Shielded) Breather filter. Make sure that it has the metal base and not the rubber base. (The rubber base breathers have a tendancy to break apart and drop rubber chunks into your valve covers...eventually running into the oiling system.) ** Check your local emissions and/or inspection laws though. ** (You can always put the stock equipment back on for inspections.) ;) Bernd D.
