Just got back from dropping my Dakota off for service, and picked up a rental for the day. I always get a rental when I'm having the truck serviced...gotta have transportation during the day even if it means driving a Mitsubishi or something. I had reserved the cheapest vehicle possible, but when I showed up at Enterprise all they had was an F150 Supercrew with 2000 miles. Free upgrade!

It feels so low!!! Not like "I'm gonna get gravel in my butt" low, but just not like I'm used to. 4.6L V8 isn't bad, just way too quiet. Seats aren't comfortable...they are firm (good) but in all the wrong places (bad). Feels like I'm balancing on a log. Shifter is angled all wrong (points down when in Drive). Not too thrilled with the cupholders either...there's plenty of them but they're either too close or too far away. But I love the adjustable pedals! Lets me sit away from the airbag and still reach the pedals.

All in all not a bad truck. But if I were buying I'd go for the Dakota or Ram Quad Cab in a heartbeat. I don't like seeing identical trucks every 30 seconds on the road.

Yeah, I could be in a 3-hamster Chevy cr@pbox, so I'm not going to complain too much!

But more observations...

I like the Ford 4 speed auto better than the 45RFE. In normal driving the two are both very smooth. At full throttle, I like the 45RFE much better...it manages torque MUCH better during full throttle shifts than the ford transmission. But in that 1/3 to 3/4 throttle range, the ford shifts smoother than the 45RFE. And unlike the 45RFE, the ford will actually give you second gear at light throttle when you're already rolling...in my Dak I can slow down to 12 mph, then give it some gas and I'll be in 3rd gear. Have to boot the gas quick to get 2nd.

More thoughts on seats...the seat back really bothers me. My spine is the only thing in contact with the seatback. I'm not sure what life form Ford used to design their seats, but it was definitely not human!

And the structure feels loose...I can feel the steering column shake over bumps, watch the dash move, and feel things moving around long after hitting a bump. My dak with 32,500 miles is much tighter than the ford with 2000 miles.

And the visibility is pretty good, except the mirrors are tiny...I almost backed into a brand new Corvette this morning because I didn't see it in my mirrors...thank God I actually looked!

Dan and All,

I had the experience of driving my brothers F150 while my truck was in the shop, and I gotta say- it was an "experience" to say the least. Three things I noticed:

1) Throttle sucks- hes got an 8 Ive got the 4.7 8.

2) While sitting at idle theres some really weird rattling noise from underneath - by the way this is bugging him and the dealer claims that they cant hear it, so if any of my Dodge buddies might have any ideas- please feel free to drop me a line.

3) Not only are the seats uncomfortable, but the dash is completely FLAT, well except the radio and AC controls that angle towards the passenger a little.

Rich

Oh yeah, guess im lucky, my Enterprise has a Dodge Dakota Quad Cab and several Rams!

I guess this is where I should chime in and say that I am a die hard Ford Truck lover. I have had quite a few and except for one, they have all been great. My Dak is awesome, but, it still has to live up to the rep that my Fords set, especially my 91 and 99. My 97 Ram 4x4 was a joke. My wifes 99 Durango and my Dak however have been great. I have not sat in the new super crew F150 so I cant comment on it. Seats might be a bit different than my 99 was. I dont care for the super crew anyway because for me, I thinks its too long.

About 5 days a week I am behind the wheel of a 2002 F150 XLT I picked up on Feb 18th. There I admit it I DRIVE A FORD!
But seriously, my 95 GMC company truck with 184,000 miles was due for replacement and so the choice was made for this ford. Our company only buys Fords and Chevys. Mine is only a 4.6 V8. Its pretty gultess as far as torque. At about 2000 rpms it comes alive though and pulls pretty good. Doesn't have the "raw power" feel of my 98 5.2 though. The seats are hard though and like Dan said, they are tilted forward. The seatbelts are built into the seat which is kind of aggrevating. The ride is really cushy like an old cadilac, and their is a LOT of wind noise. It sits pretty high for a 2wd, actually its as high as my 4x4 Dak.
I don't know the cause of it but when I come to a stop the truck rocks back and forth ever so slightly as if it has no shocks, just bounces back and forth. Wierd!
Oh and for a 2wd with a little 4.6 and 3.55 gears i only gets 14 mpg (at least thats my average for the first 1000 miles I've put on it)
Before my Dak I had a 84 ford F150 supercab with a 351 4 barrel it was great. My dad got a 95 F150 when he gave me the 84 and his 95 had the 302 That 1995 was and still is a POS. It shakes and rattles constantly and when you floor it it makes a lot of noise but doesn't move. After riding in his truck I got the impression that ford quality went to crap so I bought my dodge. My only gripe is Dodge's crappy paint.

Oh, and 2 other things
1) The buttons on the keyless entry are opposite of those on my Dakota so I'm always locking or unlocking the wrong way. Unlock the Ford, right button. Unlock the Dak, left button. Can't the auto manufacturers standardize this crap!
2) the ford power steering makes it so light. All you need is a pinky to turn the damn thing. When I get in my Dak it feels like the power steering is broken. I actually thought something was wrong with my Dak when I first drove it after spending a week in the Ford. The Dak is a LOT harder to turn in comparison but you feel the road better and feel more connected.

I noticed the same thing about the steering...I was all over the road for a while because if I moved a muscle the wheel would turn and then suddenly I'm in the next lane.

Again, it wasn't a bad truck, but there are always differences that just jump out at you when moving from one vehicle to another. Like last week I was in a rental Grand Caravan (for work) and it was so quiet and smooth that I found myself going WAY over the speed limit until I got used to it.

By the way, the guys and gals at the dealership really liked the look of my Dakota. And my service manager told me that she wanted to get a set of the black wheels for her Ram.

I really think American Racing owes Hawkeye some money for free advertising...I bought mine because I saw them on his truck, after I got mine I saw several sets pop up on other vehicles near where I work, now my service manager wants some...

WEll at least you guys got a truck to drive.
Usually, I get a Camry or a Corolla to drive when they work on the DAk (which is more than I care to admit)
For all the vaunted CR clippings about how good the Camry and the Corolla are, I have a few issues that CR seems to "gloss over"
One is the ridiculous placement of the CC switch, a little matchbox shaped thing hanging off the steering column. I am 6-4 and the silly thing bangs my knee each time I had to turn the wheel.
Second, to get full air flow to the floor in heat mode, you must MANUALLY close the outboard panel vents or else some air will continue to come out. Plus, side window clearing only occurs in defrost mode. OUr daks will blow some side air in heat, bi level, split between the windshield and floor as well as floor mode. Hmmmmmmm Here I thought CR was the champion of family safety and I drove a Toyota that only clears side windows in defrost mode. And the idle on the corolla was terribly high on cold starts over 1200 RPM so engaging the tranny like that cannot be good.
On the plus side, the 4 bangers were smooth and quiet and quite peppy for what they were. But both cars had the sex appeal of a blade of grass.
Nonethless, they got me where I needed to go.

My thoughts.

I know what you mean about the Toyotas. I used to own a Tercel that I bought new. It was reliable, inoffensive, and held its value reasonably well, but it was an appliance for getting from point A to point B. I always felt about it the same emotions that I felt about my washing machine...nice to have, but there to do a job, not inspire any emotion whatsoever.

I use to fell the same way as the poster above. But When I leased out a F-150 Supercrew. I did infact want one myself.

The engine was a 5.4 (330) 260 HP with a good 350 lbs ft of tourqe. And does in fact fell stonger than the wanabe Hemi at lower RPM.

Lets do some math kids. The Ford has 260 hp and 350 lbft. torque and 5.4 liters. The Dodge Hemi has 345 hp, 350 torque and 5.7 liters. With torque being the same hp will win. And the old drag racers addage that Cubic inches wins applies here too. So how the heck would a person in their right mind figure the Ford would "win" anything????
