Message: Check out this cool pic submitted by one of our readers for the "Reader's Ride" page of the weekly "Wheel Power." It's a 1983 Dodge Rampage. The owner forgot to include any info about it, but it rang a bell as one of the only front wheel drive pickups produced. I tracked him down and gave him a call (nice old guy, grandkids are gonna be thrilled to see their favorite car in the paper). It has a 2.2 litre 4 cyl. engine, they only produced them for 3 years.

Message: Yup! That's what I thought too, about the El Camino. Apparently there was a Shelby version of the Rampage, but it was only released in California. This came out at the same time as the Charger 2.2, it had a 4 cyl, 96 hp transverse engine. Dodge built some in 84, and released them for Plymouth with Plymouth Badging, as a Scamp.
This particular truck is all original, I found quite a bit of info on the net about them. There are a couple of turbo charged Rampages doing fairly well at the track . Some of the not-so-good info I found about it was that being front wheel drive - it was next to useless when loaded down. A heavily loaded rear end took the weight off the front driven wheels, making it hard to steer.

Message: I always liked those. Similar in concept to the VW Rabbit based pickup, but roomier and far better looking in my opinion. That could be a REAL screamer with a tweaked 2.2 turbo. Unfortunately in that 83-84 timeframe I had just gained posession of my drivers license, was in high school, and couldn't afford to buy a vehicle. So I took the 69 bug that my parents bought for me and drove it until the transmission ate itself (stinkin' semi-automatics!). Then "traded up" to my mom's old 79 Rabbit when she bought a Ford Tempo in 86...that Tempo was roomy and comfortable but had the loudest and coarsest sounding 4cyl I've ever heard...always sounded like there were steel ball bearings rattling around in the combustion chamber even when the car wasn't actually knocking!
Enough rambling down the automotive memory lane for now...

Message: You are not kiddin about not seein many Rampages any more. The only one i have seen in my area was in a Used Car dealership until i purchased it yesterday. It is a 1983 Rampage 2.2 that has been modified slightly. After doin some diggin around i found out there were only 2624 Rampage 2.2s built in 1983 and goin even further there were only 410 of them built with the red/black paintjob that mine had originally.

The problem with the Dodge Rampage was that it was ahead of it's time.
I am willing to bet that Dodge will re-release it it the near future under a different name.

Message: You are correct Lesley. Try loading up the back and trying to get any traction on soft dirt or what have you. I've always thought the Rampage was god awful ugly and the old vw rabbit based p/u at least had some "cute" value. Here are two picks of similar color and angle of each car.
What do ya'll think?

Message: I've always wondered what was going on btwn DCX and VW. The Omni/Horizon was a Rabbit (Golf) copy and had a VW engine/tranny for the first three model years. Then they both came out with the mutant pickups. In turn, VW copied the entire A/C system from DCX when they restyled theirs and gave it the Eurospec name "Golf" because they wanted "the best they had ever seen".
Which was first on the "performance" scene, the GTI or GLH??

Message: Um, actually VW copied the Rabbit from the Talbot (owned by Chrysler) Horizon which was produced in Europe before being brought to America by Chrysler as the Plymouth Horizon/Dodge Omni.
I enjoy my Rampage, but wished it was AWD or 4WD just for the times I have a bunch of stuff in the bed. The Minivan brakes, Shelby Charger suspension and the 225/50 R15's really help with the stopping and starting.

Message: Just surfin' and found your site--bottom line- If you have a Rampage or Scamp pick up--keep it. I have a Scamp-made in 83. I went to the local dealer in NJ in January of 1983, ordered the truck. Had it by the end of February. It has hauled dirt, gravel, towed a 1600 lb. boat, you name it. Got me to work from Pa for about 8 years, has 272,000+ original miles. One head gasket, two or three carb. rebuild, and is now waitng for its second replacement radiator.
She now sits in my garage, and I will soon start a restoration project on her. I have al the original paperwork, manuals, even the order sheet from the dealer. Sometimes life is good!

Message: RE: parts and problems--Doge Rampage/Plymouth Scamp
Parts for the front forward are usually available--radiators, brake pads, etc. can be bought or ordered. The front was basically a Tourismo, Horizon Omni deal. The back end may be another story--I had to have new springs made several years ago, they were custom made, but it wasn't too expensive-$90 for the pair. For the longest time, I have had to have exhausts custom bent at Midas, again no big deal.
Biggest problem with the truck, at least in the north, is rust. Even though mine was ordered and shipped in '83, like any good Chrysler product, it arrived pre-rusted!
If anyone is running a stock 2.2 setup from the early '80s vintage with the spark control computer and starts to have performance problems, (stumbling, temporary loss of power, anything that might feel like carb./fuel problems--check the alternator first. I had this back in '94, worked on it for 3 weeks, loss of pwer at high speed, etc. Turned out to be the brushes in the alternator. The Chrysler SCC of that era needs a good clean voltage to run right.
