Subject: 4 Door Trucks
IP: Logged

Message:
So, what automotive manufacturer was the first to offer a 4-door truck? And how do you know this?
Just a question that my coworkers and I were kicking around the other day. I say it’s Ford and another guy says its Dodge. Strange as I own a Dodge and he has a Ford…shouldn’t it be the other way around. Oh well any ideas would be great.
Thanks

I know Toyota had been offering Quad-Cab trucks for more than 10 years overseas. Always wondered why we could buy them here in the US. Obviously someone realized there is a market and PRESTO - look at things now...

Actually the 4 door design dates back to the 60's however they were big trucks with full beds and what not and they never really progressed into today's type of truck until the last 7 years or so(my guess)

actually, the design originated from riding horses with one person in the saddle and one hanging on from behind the saddle.

I remember seeing "crew cabs" ,Fords I think, in the late 50's or early 60's. Union Pacific railroad used alot of them for thier track maintenance crews. The were modified to be able to run on the rails. Still see one once in a while.

I think that Nissan/Datsun were the first to start the latest extend cab/crewcab movement.

Yes, thomjr is right. Nissan was the first manufacturer to ever offer true 4-door trucks.

I believe it was Nissan here in the states. They were the first to offer the "KingCab" and the first to offer the four door truck models, too. I gotta say, they do make a great truck that runs and runs....my family has owned two of them.

I used to work for the Forest Service as a firefighter in the summers. We would ride around in older, beat up 4-door Chevy's suburban-type trucks that looked like they were made in the early 1980's. They were made and sold only to the government (I think). I think Nissan's claims are correct, as they claim they were the first to sell them to the buying public, which would be true.

If they were the first why did my Dad's construction company have them from GMC in the late 60's. His was a private firm not public, altho they did work on public construction jobs such as the hiways here in Cleveland.

I remember back in the late 60's while I was in the Air Force. We had Dodge "Power Wagon" crew-cab 4X4 trucks with the old slant 6 motor and gears that could climb a brick wall! It was the model that had 6 headlights, although I don't remember the model year - 1964-65 maybe?

I dunno who offerred them first, but I do know that I saw Toyota and Nissan 4-door desiels when I visited Hungary back in 2000 or 1999; before Dodge Quad Cabs showed up. There, they're all about mileage and diesels rule due to the milage. Heck, half the cars there were Travans, with 2-cycle engines built in East Germany, and over 50% of the population rides a bicycle to save serious $$. No longer allowed on highways due to massive fatalities! Never saw a club or shortcab there the entire 10 days I stayed and travelled across the country. -tk

So, does anyone know when Dodge started offering the true independent 4 door truck? I don't mean the extended cab with suicide doors, but the fully functional 4 doors. I'm looking to buy about a 99 or 2000, but dealers seem to be confused about the term quad cab. Any help would be greatlt appreciated.

I own a 1961 Dodge W200 Crew Cab. It is a Power Wagon. It has the original Polysphere 318(which became Wedge heads starting in 67'). Dodge didn't start making crew cabs in house until 1963. 1961-1962 were special ordered. Most unusual is the truck is on a 2dr wheelbase frame. A friend of mine has a 1961 W100 2door Power Wagon and the hubs line up with mine. I believe it was ordered this way by the Utah Forest Service. There are 2 factory spotlights(UNITY),NP420 4speed trans,NP 201 2 speed xcase. The truck gets 17mpg/highway. International Harvester offered a factory 3 door crew cab called the Travelette in 1957. In 1961 the crew cab was from then on offered with 4 doors. I've seen a picture of a 1926!?!?! International crew cab.

Whew.....been almost a year since a posted here. I just wanted to point out that I am very sorry for being so rude.

You see, i'm about 4'9" and about 280lbs, bald, and not the best looking complexion. I usually don't get very many dates...and haven't gotten laid since i was 22 years old.....even then, i had to pay $150 to some crack whore down on Sunset Blvd. Because of this, i am pathetic and I feel the need to try to belittle others on Internet message boards.

I am very sorry.

From my knowlege the full size Dodge pickups were to get a 4 door configeration but did not come from the factory like this. It was a military installed option. The History channel at work.
