Steve if your truck is a club cab 4x2 2001 max trailer weight is 6350 lbs. Maximum trailer weight ratings include cargo and fluids in the trailer and must be decreased by the weight of optional equipment, trailer hitch, cargo in the truck and passengers other than the driver.

No Dakota has a 2000 lb payload, these are 1/2 ton trucks, not duallys. Steve, ultralight trailer is the only one you should consider, the Dakota is not a safe 5th wheel tow vehicle. I've pulled a 16' camper (2200 lbs) and based on the weight, could go up to 20' before it becomes an issue.

I beg to differ to 95DAKOTAV8 the factory for at least the last 2 years has offered a 2000# payload capacity this year the option is $185
it adds 11x2 inch rear brakes and 235/35/70x15
tires and I believe it also has helper springs added.

Yes I have the 2001 DC trailer towing brochere,an it shows 2001 daks cc 2wd with 2 payload ratings 1450 and 1950.GVWR'S are 5360 and 5980,but I cant find any info on what option gives this extra weight rating. I thought it might be the handling package that gives you the extra rating??

What is the curb weight of 2001 2wd Dakota with this option? If the GVWR is 5980 and the payload is 1950 than the truck with driver, and all fuels weighs only 4030. Included in the 4030 would be a 180 lb driver, 20 or so gallons of fuel at 6lbs per gallon plus another 6 or so pounds of oil. That would put the weight of the truck at 3724. I'm pretty sure the curb weight on my 95 (4x4)is 4390 and the pre-97s are lighter than the 97+.

Don't get me wrong, Dakotas are mighty trucks and I love mine but what the brochure says and what they really can do don't match.

Over the past 7 years in the Army as a transportation officer, I have done this type of mental calculations while moving everything from 68-ton M1A1 tanks on OshKosh heavy equipment transporters to small loads on 2.5ton tactical trucks.

If you know curb weight, GVWR and how much your load weighs, than you can determine if it can be safely hauled.

Also, need to find out what the GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating). GCWR minus curb weight will tell you the heaviest trailer your vehicle is rated to tow, not what it is capable of towing. The difference in what it is capable of towing and what it is rated to tow is the brakes. There are two parts to towing, going - which most vehicles can do, and stopping - where most accidents happen.

Kevin that seems to be the kicker here, nowhere can I find the actual dry weight of the truck listed ,you would have to go to a scales to do the proper calcs. You would also have to make carefull note of what extra weight you are carting when on scales and when towing trailer ,like you say it can add up fast.TANKS for your help he he.

A lot of moving and storage companies have scales for public use, most I have paid is $6.00 per trip to the scale.

get a hold of this. This last summer I saw a gen III pulling out of a gas station. Club cab. It had a I am guessing 22 foot 5th wheel with a 2 place atv trailer with 2 big 4x4 atvs. That is scary. My bro and I just shooked our head. I am in Utah and a lot of people do that here with dulleys but a dak. Give me a break.

The two choices for the dakota are called the Payload rating option your choices are 1450 and 1750 (this one comes with the bigger brakes and helper spring. But there is no dakota that can take 2000 payload they could probably take it but its not recomended. The numbers you have on trailer towing is correct but i would not pull a 5th wheel with this truck. See ya

I have been towing a 7000lb Searay Cruiser for 2 years with my 98 Dakota Ext cab 4x4 (3.9 V6). Brakes are no problem as the boat trailer has surge brakes on the trailer. The Dak was kinda lame geting on the interstate when I was using 87 octane gas. A diesel mechanic friend of mine suggested switching to 97 octane when towing which seemed to do the trick (no more engine knock ). I added monroe muscle shocks which improved handeling quite a bit. Anybody out there towing this much weight with a dakota ? I hear boats tow easier that travel trailers (less wind resistance ? ) I have been looking at load distributing hitches too as an added safety factor. Whats the max you could tow with a DAK using a LDH ?

Hi my friends!
Does anybody recommends or discourage to tow a nissan Sentra with a 1998 Dakota 3.9 L, 2 RWD, 5 speed truck?

I need to take these two vehicles from Maryland to San Diego CA, 2800 miles.

Any help, suggestion, advice or idea will be greatly appreciated since I have to make that decision soon.
Thank you

Wow, this is an old thread you dredged up with some guys who had no clue how well a v8 gen 3 could pull a fifth wheel ! My Dak pulls a 24.5' fifth wheel with guys who have v10s and diesels and runs with the quickest. How are you towing, dolly or trailer ? Your six will feel the weight towing, but probably be fine as long as trailer isn't too heavy. Load the car nose first, you want some tongue weight for decent handling.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Been looking at a 21 foot travel trailer. Anyone think I will have any problems towing it with a 2001 dodge dakota ext.cab SLT 2wd 4.7 V8. Looking at using a weight distribution hitch, from what I have read I can tow like 1750-2000 lbswith this truckbut not positive since the dealership gave me an owners manual for a sport when mines not a sport
