Subject: New Tires or New AR-15
IP: Logged

Message:
For the last couple of years I have had my eye on a new AR-15. I allways seem to buy something more practical, like a new semi-auto shot gun. I do a lot of hunting and I know I can get a lot of use out of a .223. Well I have money to get a set of new tires or an AR-15 but not both. The tires I have are fine but I wanted to go up to a larger size. Does anyone here own an AR-15? and if so, can you tell me how you like it. and how much use you get out of it. Here in Arizona there is plenty of different Game that a .223 would be suited for.

I don't have an AR-15, but I've shot alot of them before. Overall I think its a very good gun. I've had the opportunity to borrow and shoot both regular and H-bar models and both are pretty accurate. Some of the new non-Colt models have a fast twist (1 in 9"), heavy barrels and flattop or removable carrying handle recievers. These models can mount a scope or red dot and are as accurate as some bolt action rifles. It's also an easy rifle to disassemble and clean. My cousin has shot several foxes with his AR. Just stick with the soft point ammo. The only thing that I didn't like was the rattle in the stock. The recoil spring is in the stock and rattles (metal on plastic) quite a bit every time you shoot it. This can't be heard from a distance but sounds loud with your cheek on the stock. If you've never shot one of these before, it takes a little bit of time to get used to. Parts availability is also very good for the AR. Also it is more of an investment, than some other rifles, as the value of the this rifle is only going to go up. I'd buy one, myself, if I had more use for it.

I dont own "an" AR-15. I own 2. Planning on a 3rd. If your tires are in good shape then my vote is for the AR, then a few accessories, then save up again for the tires. I love my AR's and have always had one. My recomendation is Bushmaster, hands down.

Cheaper yes, more reliable not really. I have had to work on a few. They are both about the same. The 7.62x39 does have more muzzle energy but by about 150 yards they start to equal out. The 5.56 is stronger at extended ranges and is a bit more accurate round though. Not taking away from your point though. :-) The point is you are an ARMED AMERICAN. Every terrorist worst nightmare.

I don't know..... I kind of like the "rattle" sound in the stock. Bam-ddddt. How do you spell out or type a rattle? hehehe

I would get the AR for sure. It is a good investment and fun too. Yeah, you have to watch what ammo you shoot thru it. I do know that if you try and shoot a rabbit with hollow points.... you will be lucky to find an ear! hahaha

OK, it's on order. Bushmaster XM15 E2S M4 Carbine.
I hope to get alot of use out of it. I checked a couple of other manufacturers. Everyone seems to be having either shipping of manufacturing delays. They all have been selling out of stock. I am looking at 3-4 weeks for delivery. All the local stores are out of stock. Just 3 weeks ago I was looking around and most of the local shops had at least 4 in stock. Good thing though, The prices have not gone up.

I have to ask, what are you gonna do with the AR? I know alot of people who have them that use them for predator/varmint hunting. Here in California they arent allowed so we are stuck using our varmint rifles and deer rifles for coyotes. If any of you are in to coyote or any predator hunting drop me a line. Once the weather gets cold an miserable here, you wont be seeing much of me or my dak. Once I get my truck "outfitted", we will be screwing off hunting coyotes, going on some local 4x4 trails, etc.

Woo Hoo, Got my new AR!!! Going to the rifle range this morning. Now comes the fun part. Buying all the cool accessories. Hey Hawkeye, What have been some usefull accessories for you? What is the Firearms transportation laws in Florida? Here in Arizona, you can tranport a loaded fire arm anywhere in the passenger compartment, concealed or not as long as it is in a holster or a gun or rifle bag. This has been a cool week I also got notification that my 2002 Dakota has been shipped to the dealer. Hopefully it will get hear before the start of Quail season next Saturday.

You can carry a handgun any where in the vehicle so long as it is "Securly encased", meaning in a holster with a strap, in the glove box, in a pouch, etc.., and not readily available for immediate use as if it were on your person. That means it cant be on you or laying on the seat next to you etc. Nothing in particular about long guns as they are considered to cumbersome to use that easily from inside a vehicle anyway. 3 out of every 5 pickups here (and we are about half or more trucks vs cars) have a gun rack in the back window with something in it. However, if you have a concealed weapons liscence such as my self, then the above doesnt appply.

The topic of AR accessories is wild. There are so many good things out there. First thing I suggest is to get as many 20 and 30 round mags as you can find. There are tons of them out there at pretty good prices. Bushmaster has them for sale on their website too. Is yours the flat-top A3 M4 or the A2 style? If you have the flat top then I suggest getting a #38 swan sleeve from Bushmaster to mount in place of the carry handle and then put a Trijicon Reflex on that. Then you have a good site setup. There are just tons of things available. Go to their website and brouse around. I'll see what other ideas I can come up with. Email me if you want. Might be easier that way. Mine are both A2 uppers. I am saving to buy another upper, A3 M4 style. You got the one with the muzzle brake already attached right? If you plan to use it as a home defense rifle too then look at a good light mount like the ones from Sure Fire. Congrats. You will love it. As for ammo, get yourself a good supply of standard FMJ. Cant hurt to have plenty of it stockpiled and its pretty cheap. For Defensive purposes, look at the Hornady TAP rounds. For in the house, Winchester 42 gr Silver Tip BT. They give very good results but wont over penetrate or go flying through the walls in the house. For hunting, any good 55 - 72 gr soft point or hollow point.

Hawkeye, I'm ready Bro! I went to the rifle range yesterday and set my sights. Damn, this AR places some sweetly tight shot groupings. I just got the word yesterday that my little Brother enlisted with the Army. I'm Proud of him. There is a large gun show here in Tucson next week. I will definitly go and pick up several 30 round mags and probly a crate of ammo. I also own an SKS. I usually go through a 1000 round crate of 7.62mm round in a year. I spend a lot of time shooting. My SKS will no doubt start collecting dust while I start pumping rounds through my new Bushmaster.
As to your previous question, My AR has an A2 style upper, muzzle brake and postban tele-style buttstock. I saw the CM 2037 37mm flare launhcer that Bushmaster sells as an AR attachment. Looks just like a grenade launcher. Have you ever used one of these and what is your oppinion about them.

It has begun. Osama, Your days are numbered.

Oh, one more thing I had to add. Yesterday afternoon I dusted of my Powered Paragliger and took it for an hour and a half flight around the Catalina mountains. Damn what an awsome feeling. I had not taken it for a flight in almost two years. Just imagine sitting in a swing like seat with your feet dangling from 13000 feet. The air rushing around you, and when you are at high altitude you shut off the engine and just hear the flap of the air foil above you as you fly around looking for rising air thermals. I had to sneek it out of the house. My wife has a fit every time I take it out.

I just had to share.

Mac that flare launcher is cool. Cant buy anything other than flares for it though because everything else is restricted to LE only. When I was in the Army I carried an M203 on my M16. Loved that thing. Not sure if it will mount on yours or not. Yours is almost identical to mine. The M203's that the military mounts on the M4's are a bit shorter and a little different than the ones for a fullsize rifle. Only solution is to go buy yourself a fullsize AR to go with your carbine. :-) Cool deal on the glider. Would love to do that.

That just gives me another excuse to buy a second AR. If you can buy tear gas rounds for your 12 guage shot gun, why can't you buy tear gas rounds for a flare launcher? Anyway, I should just be happy with what I got now. Quail season starts next weekend. It runs till February. I'm gonna be a shotgun shootin fool. My shot guns: a Remington 870 wingmaster 12 guage pump and a Mossberg 9200 12 guage semi-auto. I use the pump if the Quail are sparce and the semi-auto if the are thick.
Here come the Sunday night Quail fry's. MMM, MMM Good.

I know the feeling. I have 2 AR's and a third one in the plans. Send some of that fried Quail down my way. You need to get you a 18 inch barrell for your 870 that way it can do double duty as a hunting or defensive gun. They are only about $95. Thats how I had my 870 set up. Dont have any hunting shotguns anymore. Just my Benelli M1 Super 90 Defense and a Mossberg M590. Speaking of them, guess I better run put a few drops of oil in them as well. :-)

Good deal on the barrell Mac.

On a different note, Have any of you guys had any experience with a Stoner M63A rifle or a RA M96 Expeditionary Rifle. The RA is basically a copy of the Stoner that they bought the rights to make. It is 100% US made and looks to be VERY high quality. I have fallen in love with this rifle and will be saving up for one ASAP. It uses all AR-15 magazines and is 5.56 (.223) cal. The Stoner 63A was made for the Seals to use in Vietnam and was an excellent rifle. All the reports I have read rate this as even better than AR's or AK's. It is a little pricey but man I love it and must have one. I said all that just because I am interested if by some odd chance any of you might have had any contact with one.

the ar15 is one of the worlds best rifles for the money.. I used them for 12 yrs in the army with absolutely no problems at all..and it is 1 of the only rifles I know of that you can change from 1 caliber to another in under 30 seconds.. The other rifle is the grandfather to the ar15, the ar10 which I also own..Smart would get rid of all other rifles and just use the ar15 .. you can get uppers in different calibers for what ever you hunt.. Calibers range from the .223 all the way up to the massive .50 bmg but for practicle use I have it in .223 7.62 sks/ak round and for big game like bears i use the .50 action express

Hi I'm from England and I'm so envious of you guys.... I'm only 17 and when I can I'm gonna go straight to the good old USofA and buy me some GUNS. May sound weird, but my shotgun really isn't as much fun as the "proper" rifles you all are using! Plus, just about everything is banned in this country apart from side-by-sides and single shot pansy rifles. Out of interest, do any of you know (in brief!) what the hunting laws are in general in the USA? Thanks,
