Excellent reading guys, I've been away from this thread form a few weeks and I see I'ts gotten better and better!

The errosion of individual freedoms and the growth of a tyrannical Government are slow in the making. The despots who would try to enslave us in the name of protection and security would have it no other way. Beware of slow change. Its the sudden things we most often notice in life.

A lot of people say "Oh that will never happen" But all it would take would be a few more 9-11's to start sneaking things through. The word "Security" rings strong and true to most folks, afterall, we all want security. I'ts unfortunate that thier are those of us who would rather be led like sheep to a slaughter in exchange for Government taking care of them.

We MUST SEVERLY RESTRICT immigration. The biggest threat we Americans face is the loss of our way off life due to Foreign influence. Too many want to come here and reap the benefits of our forefathers sacrifice while refusing to learn our culture, speak our language, or even call themselves Americans.

Americans are stronger than the rest of the world, and stronger and superior to other people in the world. We MUST take drastic steps to keep it that way.

Holy smokes! I've known about this site since about last November, when I got my second Dak (QC 3.9l, yeah I know it's slow ; ) ) but have never stuck my head into the off topic board... what have I been missing? I wish I would have known about this thread earlier...

There's a few of you I'd like to shake your hands. I couldn't agree more with Hawkeye, and a few others... And Hawk, I too cringe every time I hear "Bullets" for "Cartridge" or "Clip" for "Magazine".

I learned how to shoot a long, long time ago. I'm 30 now and hope to teach my wife (still resistant) how to shoot soon.

I've never fired a shot in anger and pray I never do, but I've taken enough courses and in general prepared myself enough that I sincerely hope I could handle myself well in such a "situation". I may not have many guns, but I'll be damned if I'll let a despotic, self important government take them away in the name of "safety".

Vote, and let your voices be heard louder than gunshots.

I really like what the Minnesota Governor has said about "career politicians". Sometimes I wish their terms would be limited to 3 or 4 (no I'm not trying to change the Constitution), and then its time to get out and live a regular life of normal society. I'm sure that the power to make and change laws can get into your head and warp your sense of reality and goodness. Most of the politicians that threaten our very safeties seem to have been living in D.C. for years and years. Its time to get out and go back to society.

Good to be here, Gunman, and thanks for the welcome. It's nice that two of my passions, shooting and driving (note: not shooting WHILE driving ; ) ), came together like this.

I spent a while at work today reading the whole 2 hundred and whatever posts there were in this thread... I noticed the anti's that were in the thread beat a hasty retreat right around 9/11... Hopefully they saw the light and have changed. Probably not...

Keep your powder dry, gentlemen.

I don't know if limiting immigration is the total answer. Would I would support is an effort that tells immigrants who come to this country the following things:
1. You live here, get a JOB, pay your own way.
2. Bring your culture if you desire but don't rant and rave that the rest of america has to make exceptions for your "multi culturalisms"
3. Learn to speak english
4. Learn to write in English
5. Repeat 3 and 4 above.
6. Become a citizen.

Maintain your heritage but remember millions who came before you ASSIMILATED into the big melting pot.

THe Italians brought more than pasta, the Germans more than beer and knockwurts, the jews more than bagles, the Indians more than curries and such. The English gave us more than roast beef and yorkshire pudding, the Poles more than huluski and perogies. Each ethnic group (including the ones I did not mention) brought with them a single minded purpose: To start a new life in the new world. They came for freedom and opportunities that were not known in their homelands. WHile they kept some of their ethnic identity, they also became americans and forged a new country.
I love reading the story about Lee Iacocca's dad ( an Italian) who took his kids to see the Statue of Liberty. I love seeing how he made a life for himself, became a citizen, but yet retained his Italian traits. But first and foremost he was an American Citizen!

WHat bugs me is how we are supposed to kiss ass to all those who come here and make darn certain we don't "offend" multinationals with our displays of patriotism. Pardon me, but YOU are NOT a citizen therefore where is it written that I am obligated to bow down to your desires? WOuld I be able to go to Paris and b*tch when they celebrate Bastille Day? Probably not. The French are noted for telling others to take a flying phuck at the moon when questioned about their patriotisms! We need to do the same!
If american offends those from foreign lands, so be it. We are not, however, obligated to appease those who disagree with our lifestyle.

Well said indeed.

Has anyone else noticed the price of guns has come down slightly? A friend just picked up a British FN/FAL for 500$

I'm hoping they go down even more with Dubya in office. Any chance they'll ever repeal the Clinton crime bill?

You might want to take a look at the Para Carry. Guns & Ammo mag just picked it as one of the best in 2001. 3" barrel, 4.7" high, 6 + 1 rounds of .45ACP. Looks like it make a great carry concealed.

Paras rock, and I can vouch for Kimbers also - I have experience with both.

It's a toss up... do you want *super* accuracy? Then you're in the Kimber market. If you want decent accuracy with the extra capacity? Para is your bet. Just make sure you get the "grandfathered" high-cap mags or it won't be worth your while.

I have ruled out the Para cause of the width. Excellent gun though. would make a fine duty gun as well. The Kimber is oh so sweet, especially the meltdown.

The new Glock 38 I beleive it is, is nice and slim.

I guess it will come down to a lenghty test shoot.
anybody else have suggestions? Thanks for the input guys.

I believe you might be thinking of the Glock 36. It is nice. Tad bit of muzzle flip due to the light weight and short barrel but nothing uncontrolable. I was going to suggest an H&K USP 45C, but that would probably be bigger than what your looking for.

There was an advertised price yesterday for a Ruger K Mini 14 for $459 new. We used to have one of these guns for deer hunting and general fun. Its supposed to have one of the highest velocities I think, a fast bullet. I was just wondering if this was a good buy or not?

I've been looking at the Mini 14 (.223 rem) and Mini 30 (7.62 x 39) and the best price I've found is $489 for the blued and $509 for the stainless steel so your $459 looks pretty good.

I agree, 489$ is fair. If you can, try to get them to throw in an extra mag or some ammo, or a cheap accessory like a sling or something.

Trust me, the world of gunsales is very competitive and a lot of dealers will give you a freebie for youre buisness. The old "can you throw in a spare magazine" still works :-]

And yes the 223 is fast-------->

When you campare them to something like my model 70 featherweight I picked up for $515 comapared to $599 for the base model ruger 77, the choice was easy. Plus, if I was shooting a round like the 7mm rem mag, 264win mag, etc. and wanted a 24" barrel, I would be SOL with the ruger. Not to mention their crappy triggers. I guess you can say I am partial to winchesters. Oh yeah, the customer service and overal quality of the later rem 700 has gone down considerably.

Cheap? I wouldnt call a kid who brown bags it for 4 months and even has gone with out lunch a bunch of times to get his deer rifle cheap. I would call him devoted. Sorry for looking for the best deal. Speaking of cheap; winchester model 70 featherweight in .270win, leupold 3x9x40mm in matte finish all for $966 out the door including mounts, rings, and bore sight. Good deal?

Sarah Brady skirted gun laws in buying son's rifle
New York Daily News
March 22, 2002 08:15:00

WASHINGTON - Gun-control advocate Sarah Brady bought her son a powerful rifle for Christmas in 2000 - and may have skirted Delaware state background-check requirements, the New York Daily News has learned.

Brady reveals in a new memoir that she bought James Brady Jr. a Remington .30-06, complete with scope and safety lock, at a Lewes, Del., gun shop.

"I can't describe how I felt when I picked up that rifle, loaded it into my little car and drove home," she writes. "It seemed so incredibly strange: Sarah Brady, of all people, packing heat."

Brady became a household name as a crusader for stricter gun-control laws after her husband, James, then the White House press secretary, was seriously wounded in a 1981 assassination attempt on then-President Ronald Reagan.

Brady writes in "A Good Fight" that the unnamed gun shop ran federal Brady Law and Delaware state background checks with great fanfare.

The book suggests that she did not have her son checked, as required by Delaware state law.

"(W)hen the owner called in the checks, it seemed to me he spoke unnecessarily loudly, repeating and spelling my name over and over on the phone," Brady writes.

Amy Stillwell, a spokeswoman for The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said the federal Brady Law does not require background checks for intrafamily gun gifts.

Stillwell said she did not know whether her son was checked under the state law. The Delaware Department of Justice says the state does not have an exemption for family gifts.

"Scott is not a convicted felon, and he is not prohibited from owning a gun," Stillwell said. "Scott Brady could walk into a store and buy a - he is not a prohibited purchaser."

Delaware Justice Department spokeswoman Lori Sitler said the purchase could be illegal under state law if Brady did not also say who she was buying the gun for and submit his "name, rank and serial number" for a full check.

"You can't purchase a gun for someone else," Sitler said yesterday. "That would be a 'straw purchase.' You've got a problem right there."

Anti-gun control advocates were surprised to hear of Brady's foray into their world.

"We hope that it's innocuous and there's been no laws violated," said James Jay Baker, chief lobbyist for the National Rifle Association. "It's obviously interesting that Sarah would be purchasing firearms of any kind for anybody, given her championing of restrictive guns laws for everyone."

Andrew, you got a damn good scope for that Mod 70.
I probably wouldve brought the price down a little lower with a cheaper scope , but thats just me.

966$ sounds like a fair price to me. I like the 270, nice and flat with good ballistics.

If you need a little $ so you can eat, I'm sure we can all come up with a little " FEED ANDREW " drive. Or you could try the church!
