At first I wasn't gonna dignify that question with an answer, but no, I do not hunt deer with FMJ. And as far as hitting them right the first time, I take pride in my ability to shoot, and try to score humane kills. That is THE key. Humane kills. I'ts better to use a little too much than not enough.

Further more, not every shot will be dead on, and on those hopefully rare occasions, I should hope that your'e using a load that leaves enough of a permanent stretch cavity to cause youre prey to bleed out and die of inadequate tissue perfusion in as little time as possible.

Ok, ok just a joke, lets not get our feathers fuffled. Its no mystery that someone who knows as much as you about guns and shooting would shoot a deer with a FMJ. I couldnt agree more about more is better than less. take it easy.

Chris W, nothing yet - but since tomorrow is payday, I'll be adding another $100 to my rifle purchase kitty! ;-) I'm gonna try to get out again this weekend to check out some of the more recent recommendations, e.g., Browning BAR & Remington model 7400 in .243win, .270win, & .308win. You can see where I'm heading again - one rifel for coyotes & whitetail. I also read an article(Hunting Digest.com)on "Autoloading Deer Rifles" which spoke highly of the .44 Magnum Ruger. I think you previously mentioned taking deer with .44 Magnum? Although price of the rifle is a significant factor, if I find a rifle that will serve both purposes well, and that I really like the feel of, its mine!

I was reffering to the little 44Mag carbines for taking wild pigs and feral dogs and such. But I have heard of folks who use the round for Deer.

Here in North GA. the Deer can get pretty large, and most of the Deer guns we sold were mid to large caliber rifles.

IMO I'd still go for a dedicated rifle for youre Deer hunting needs.

Now I have a question. I hike a lot in the north GA area, mainly the Cohutta wilderness region. In the past they have closed areas due to black bear problems. I dont want to end up on some bears $hit list so I'm considering a 44Mag wheelgun for when I go hiking or camping. I figure that and a large can of pepper and I should be okay.

What do ya'll think?

LOL, chris.
A liberal gungrabber would suggest you find out why the bear is angry. Maybe he suffered from urban assault syndrome and his momma didn't get enough $$$$ to properly care for her offspring. Maybe his poppa was too harsh on him and thus, he suffers from low self esteem. Maybe as a cub, he was made fun of by other woodland critters and he is "acting out" his anger by taking a swipe at a human.
Or maybe ranger smith stole all the picnic baskets and gave them to Yogi and boo boo.
In that case, he's just plain hungry!

Myguess is that your .44 with some Barnes X bullets or Federal Hydrshocks would do the trick at close range but anything further out would probably wound him and just piss him off. In that case, I suggest a tree climbing class!

Hahaha. so true so true.

I was wondering when you were gonna start putting youre 2cents in. :-}

Now, I know the 44 is a big ol slow bullet that relies on mass to do it's damage, but do you think that a 6 inch barrel would be preferable to a 4 incher? I'm leaning toward the 4 inch.

Any suggestions? I'm considering the Taurus. I own a Taurus 38 snubby, and I'ts real close to a Smith in terms of quality, and shootability.

6 inch hell go for 8 inch if you can buy one. Longer barrel helps velocity and accuracy.

Taurus,,,,hmmm not a big fan of those but I can recommend S&W for sure.
Ruger super redhawk or super blackhawk are fine choices too.
For one of the best factory triggers, go for the Colt Python in 8 inch barrel...or was it the Anaconda...OH, I recall....the King Cobra if you can find them used.

I'll go for the 6 inch barrel since concealability isn't an issue. I'd like a stainless Redhawk, although a used Smith in good shape isn't out of the question.

Thanks for the input.

I have considered the .44rem mag carbine for my close quarters black bear hunting but found the 30-30 carbine leaves it in the dust. As far as revolvers go, have you looked at the colt anaconda? or was it the python? one was a 44 and the other a 357. they have a sweet camo finish

As far as a dual purpose round, you really cant beat the .270win

oh yea, they say dont climb a tree, fight back, play dead, run uphill, run down hill but the truth is, either kill him the first time or learn to fist fight a bear.

The Colts are sweet, nice triggers too, but unfortunately for me, too expensive.

I'm not kidding about the Bear up here, the ones I have seen look a litle on the skinny side, and they seem easily agitated. They are probably hungry, and getting comfortable around Bi-peds. NOT a good combination.

On a hiking trip I witnessed my father in-law jump into the back of a lifted Ferd truck to escape a black bear. He kept running from one side of the bed to the other screaming at the bear. Pretty funny, but If the truck wasnt there this could have had a nasty ending. Or a good ending considering how I feel about my in=laws these days!

Anyhow, more people showed up and the bear spooked. so you can see how I might be a little concerned, since I like to solo hike sometimes-I know , bad idea.-

it it weren't so obvious, I'd take my Winchester Defender 12Ga/18inch barrel, parkerised finish/with me, but i dont want heat from the Rangers.

I figure a big wheelgun with a subdued flapholster would be more practical.

It may not be the best choice, but the 44 revolver is all I can think of.

open too suggestions .

Those .44 mag revolvers are VERY popular among bear hunters around here mainly beacuse its light, compact, and packs quite a punch. I am debating on if I should get a 30-30 carbine, 45/70 carbine or a short, rifled barrel 12ga with slugs for this seasons bear hunting.

I'd probably go for the 12ga with rifled slugs due to the sheer mass of the slug.

I also plan to carry my 44 as a sidearm when I go hunting.
