Easy.

Thats sure to get a rise out of them.
Oh, don't forget personal responsibility however you might have to explain that concept to them.
Tiger Dak, try bismuth for waterfowl. Its expensivce, but I hear first hand it performs just like lead and really brings em down!

Message: you won't like steel once you start going after pheasants at 35 yards with 6 shot! And wounding or missing them.
Bismuth is a heavy non toxic metal that is ok to use for waterfowl yet it flies like lead. Steel does not have the ballistics qualities of lead, ie its not as dense (unlike liberals which are dense) therefore it does not pack the downrange kill power of lead.
Bismuth, while VERY expensive, does pack the power of lead but without the danger of killing Donald Duck or Daffy when he eats stuff from the lake.
Also, steel shot does not pattern well at all when compared to lead. I suggest using a more open choke for steel shot to prevent shot strings.
Good luck.

Its my first Dodge truck (previously owned a 1971 F100 - 3 on the tree/fun truck - around 20 years ago)and I'm waiting impatiently for its arrival. In the meantime, I'll be checking out rifles at the Albany Gun Show (Albany, NY) this weekend (1/26 & 1/27). I've been doing some Coyote hunting (won't the Dak come in handy for this!)and am thinking about a 30-30 - probably a Model 94 Winchester. Any recommendations?

Cannot offer advice on a rifle as I don't own one now but if I had to buy one tomorrow, I would get a 30.06 probably a Savage..gun tests magazine has written good stuff on Savage and the riles accuracy.
Personally, I like the idea of a 12 ga slug with a .357 for "close encounters"
But to each his own...the important thing is that you are exercising your constitutional right to own a firearm.
Maybe others can weigh in on what is a best rifle for this guy?

Message: 12G., I think a 30-06 would be too much for coyote. I would probly go for a 223 Rem. You can find a lot of sweet semi-auto rifles in this caliber. I have an AR-15A2 HBAR, and it works great on coyote.
The Ruger mini 14 is also a good choice but kinda pricey for the 30 rd mags/ thanks to the slickster!
Gunman, good advice on the HP's- I carry a well worn Glock 17 for protection stocked with Fed Hydra-shok in 124g in winter, and Corbon 115g in summer. reason being i dont want the lighter, faster load to get slowed by heavy winter clothing. [ you'd be surprised what a heavy leather coat will do to reduce the energy of a light round designed to fragment in the body.
I know the 9mm is kinda small, but the Hydra-Shok has a good street record. do you have any other choices in 9 ? The Glaser is out due to price.

Message: I haven't messed much with my 9MM. My pistol experience covers the .357 and I used to reload a ton of ammo until I moved out and got my own place. But back then, I scored some black talons in 170 grain and sat them on top of a nice charge of Unique powder. The accuracy was good but boy did they kick. The damage the inflicted on some gelatin and even some wood was eye opening. I keep those back for defense rounds. My best load was a 125 gr JHP winchester over some W231 in Rem cases with CCI primers. Excellent velocity and retained energy downrange and not much smoke.
I haven't had any experience with Hydra shocks but I have read good reviews on them.
Both my pistols are S&W.

For coyote it depends on what action you would prefer.
Bolt action-Winchester Model 70 "coyote" in 22-250.
Semi-auto-AR15 in .223(what else?)
Pump-Browning BAR in .243win
Single-shot-Ruger No.1 in .22-250,.223,.243
Sorry, lever action 30-30's wouldnt make good coyote guns unless its up close and then you could use a 12ga. with no.4 buckshot
A 30-06 may or may not mess up the pelt too bad, it depends on where you hit them and with what you hit em' with.

I love my 9 but to tell you the truth, I'd rather have something with more energy. So, I'm looking into the new Glock single stack 45acp. I forget the number, 36 or something.
Anyhoo, the AR-15A2 HBAR is the heavy barrel version of the civilian version of the Gen 2 M-16A2.
Actually mine is made by Armalite and is post ban, but has a somewhat effective flashhider permanently fitted to the barrel. IMO, the Armalite receiver is the best there is followed by Bushmaster and Colt. My rifle has a 1 in 9 twist, so it'll eat any 223 ammo you put in it. Stay away from AR's with the 1 in 7 twist cause you can only shoot the ss 109 crap through it. It spins the 55gr loads off target. My rifle also has the new rear sight setup,- I shoot iron sights now till I figure out what scope to get- VERY accurate! HBAR just means heavy barrel for more accuracy. It weighs about 2 lbs more than standard AR, but for long range hitting it's great. I payed about $700 Am very happy!
G-man, Dude, I LOVE Benelli shotguns, have you checked the prices lately? WAY up there.

Yup, they are bucks. But at least they are not built to a price like Mossberg.
My goal is the SBE in 12ga 28 inch barrel for waterfowl.
My NOVA had been to he77 and back and still fires like a champ. Patterns real nice too! Its lethal on waterfowl! Even with steel shot but bismuth really reaches out there and brings em down!
I heard pretty good things about Dillion presses. DONT get LEE. Been there, done that. They are cheaper than others, but you get what you pay for.
Personlly, I like the Hornady lock-n-load AP press. Lee dies are pretty good however.
I'd like to check into an AR -15 ya know, just to have one.

Message: Since AR's are my specialty (well, along with 1 or 2 others), I have to chime in here. They can be very effective rifles for small game. There are a number of good brands available in a miriad of configurations. Bushmaster, Rock River, Knights, Armalite, Cavalry Arms, and of course Colt, just to name a few. I am a die hard Bushmaster fan. Have a couple of them. For small game hunting one of Bushmasters new Varmit rifle's would be perfect.
Not being picky Chris but in an effort to keep the ATF from your door, I suspect that what is on yours is a muzzle break and not a flash suppressor. They are a bit different and you cant have a flash suppressor on a post ban rifle.

And since you got me on the subject, this is a pet peave of mine. Their is a difference between a CLIP and a MAGAZINE. Garands use a clip. Rifles such as an AR use a magazine. Semi-automatic handguns use magazines with a few exceptions.

If your'e familiar with the new Armalite's then maybe you could tellme what you think it is. You know how all the postban AR's have the plain barrel? well i think its unique that there is something on the end that actually seems to work. { at night the flash seeems to come out of the little slots in the side of device{3 on each side} ? but then its awful loud, so maybe its a break?? I'm not sure.
Speaking of AR's my buddy has a Preban busmaster CAR-15 with the long flashhider on the tip, collapsible stock, bayonet lug, SWEET!

Message: 12ga, I would take the AR for the fact that it has less recoil and ammo is much cheaper which means more practice time. Not sure what the Bushmaster Varmit rifle's are going for. You could possibly get a standard 20 inch V-match for really close to $900, would depend on your dealer.
Chris, if its an Armalite, its a muzzle brake. Funny, we cant have a flash suppressor (which serves only to minimize muzzle flash, and most modern ammo is loaded with flash retardent powder anyway) but we can have a muzzle brake (which helps to stabilize the bullet, reduces muzzle rise, reduces recoil, all of which allow the rifle to be fired faster and more accurately). Muzzle brakes just dont "look" as evil as a flash suppressor. Go figure.

I also checked out a Bushmaster AR which I can get for $800. Thats a great looking rifle. The rifle that really made me smile though was the M1 Garand. I'd never held one before - it's heft really surprised me! But it is one impressive looking piece of artillary. I could get one for around $800 - but I don't think I'd like to lug something that heavy around all day. Now I'm leaning toward a getting .223 for coyotes and saving up for another rifle for whitetail season.
