Subject: Best boat for the money? IP: Logged
Message: Want something to pull behind the Dak, looking at getting a boat. Want a ski boat that can also be used to do some fishing. Want to be able to haul a few friends and family around, like 5 or 6 people. Which boats are the best for the money, which ones should I stay away from?

Message: Where are you going to fish? How big a boat are we talking about?
A dual-purpose, fish and ski rig, with enough room for 5-6 people, and enough power to be a ski boat? You're talking 18 feet, minimum, with at least 150 horses.
Are you buying new, or used?
Try the forums at www.thehulltruth.com. I think you'll find your answer there.

Message: We have an 86 21' Four Winns Santara that we just bought for like five grand at the beginning of the summer and it's got enough power for skiing, big enough to hold a few people and give a good ride, it has a GM 305 V8 Mercruiser outdrive puts out about 230 HP, which is enough to make it pretty quick.

Message: Yeah, Billybob, I tend to be uncomprimising when it comes to my fishing, also. I believe that a Bass Boat should be a Bass Boat, a Ski Boat, a Ski Boat.
But, not that many people can afford both, so, they have to comprimise.

Message: Cant ski behind a bass boat??? I can remember back in high school me and some friends use to always take out this bass tracker. We would fish in the morning and late afternoon and ski/kneeboard all during the day. If i remember right it was about 14ft with a Johnson 50. It pulled awesome with 3 people in the boat and a skier behind it.

Message: Yes LiveDakota, you could water ski behind just about anything...even a 31' Bertram.
Question is, would you want to?

Message: Why not? Skiing is skiing right? Does it matter what kind of boat is pulling you? The way i figure it, the bigger the wake off the boat the more fun you would have skiing behind it. LOL, or atleast thats how i am. Its no fun just skiing around with nothing to jump or play around on.

Message: Actually, true ski boats are designed to minimize wakes. They are also inboard powered, with the engine mounted as close to midships as possible. A Ski Boat's rudder is situated well behind the Ski Post, to minimize off center torque, when pulling Skiers.
The best known Ski Boat is the Ski Nautique, by Correct Craft. You can read about it HERE
Coincidently, back in the day, Correct Craft was almost exclusively powered by Chrysler Marine inboards.

Message: I've got a 1989 19foot Larson power boat. We use it for fishing, skiing, cruising, or whatever else we want to do. It has been a great boat and people think it is only a couple of years old because it is in such great shape. I was up in Ohio yesterday getting it ready for winter storage, only good thing about that is that it means it's time to get the snowmobiles out for the winter!!!!

Message: I'm looking forward to smowmobiling this year, as I only managed one trip last year. It didn't even snow that much in upstate NY, where I do most of my riding, last season.
We manage to get a long boating season, here in Jersey. We usually start in April, and don't put the boat away until about Thanksgiving.
Late October and November is our prime Striper fishing period.

Message: 23V Kenner w/ tunnel hull. This will be my nest boat. Right now I have a 20ft aquaspot w/ 150 Mariner. I don't ski anyhow...I wake board if someone is pulling me behind a boat. Kenner's aren't really meant to pull skier's anyhow. They run super shallow though!!

It's an 1987 Thompson Cutlass 185 (18.5 feet obviously) I bought it this past August for $2,900. it has a 4 cyl 165 hp Merc Cruiser (sp?) it holds (according to the tag) 8 people or 1200 lbs (I see room for 9-10) it has an open bow then 2 bucket seats then a bench that can easily hold 4 people. The floor was rotted that's why I was able to get it soooo cheap, but I replaced the floor myself, and as soon as I put the new carpet in, I'll have a $5-6,000 boat. I have had the boat up to 42mph with a screwed up prop, so this winter I'm going to have it refurbished and ready for next year. This is my first boat, never really wanted one, but towards the end of the summer I started looking at them and a couple days later I drove her home. It's a blast, I try and go every weekend no matter how cold it gets hehehe, we do look like tools in our Carhearts though LOL

Message: Thats a nice boat, Clevite77.
I'm on my 5th boat, a 21' Mako Center Console. I'm in the process of repowering it (damn 200-225 HP outboards cost almost as much as a new car!
I've owned, or have been around boats, for the last 22 years.
I started with an 18 foot Starcraft center console, moved up to a 23' Mako center console, then traded that in on a 25' Wellcraft Walk-Around cuddy cabin, then sold that for 1971 31' foot Bertram, that I spent tons of money on, repowering it with Cummins "B" series diesels (same block used in the RAM). That last one was costing me a fortune in storage, slip rental, and maintenance, so I downsized to a trailerable boat, again (Mako 21).
Double J, no matter what size boat you start out with, you will probably wind up suffering from "twofootitis", and buy a bigger boat every couple of years or so.
