Message: What The?, you are correct for one thing, if you had the same size tires and changed the rear axle gears, it could work out to the same. I disagree however, about getting better gas mileage. By using bigger tires than
what came on the car/truck you are putting more stress on everthing from the engine to the axle. If you correct the speedodometer and you only went to a slightly bigger tire, then yes you may gain a little fuel mileage, but if you go from a stock tire of say 28 inch diameter, to a 33 then I do think you will lose some fuel mileage because the bigger tires are heavier, and cause the truck to be higher, (more wind reistance). That is why it is recomended to change the axle gearing to make the over all gearing close to what it was when stock, or even lower geared.
Other wise you have done your homework and I feel you do know what you are talking about.
